Information Fusion-Based Storage and Retrieve Algorithms for WSNs in Disaster Scenarios

Abstract: Sensor networks are especially useful in catastrophic or disaster scenarios such as abysmal sea, floods, fires, or earthquakes where human participation may be too dangerous. Storage technologies take a critical position for WSNs in such scenarios since the sensor nodes may themselves fail unpredictably, resulting in the loss of valuable data. This paper focuses on fountain code-based data storage and recovery solutions for WSNs in disaster scenarios. A review on current technologies is given on challenges posed by disaster environments. Two information fusion-based distributed storage (IFDS) algorithms are proposed in the “few global knowledge” and “zero-configuration” paradigm, respectively. Correspondingly, a high-efficient retrieve algorithm is designed for general storage algorithms using Robust Soliton distribution. We observe that the successful decoding probability can be provisioned by properly selecting parameters—the ratio of number of source node and total nodes, and the storage capacity M in each node.
The GG Genotype of Telomerase Reverse Transcriptase at Genetic Locus rs2736100 Is Associated with Human Atherosclerosis Risk in the Han Chinese Population

Abstract: A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the second intron of human TERT (hTERT), rs2736100, acts as a critical factor in hTERT synthesis and activation. The rs2736100 SNP was found to be associated with susceptibility to many cancers. Recently, inhibition of telomerase and marked telomere shortening were determined to be closely associated with the increasing severity of atherosclerosis. The association between the SNP of rs2736100 and the presence of atherosclerosis was evaluated in 84 atherosclerosis patients and 257 healthy controls using multivariate logistic regression analyses. The proportion of the GG genotype in atherosclerosis patients (17.9%) was significantly higher than in the control group (9.7%). Eight variables, including age, gender, cholesterol, high density lipoprotein, homocysteine, total bilirubin, indirect bilirubin, and rs2736100 GG genotype, were associated with atherosclerosis with odds ratios of 1.88, 2.11, 1.66, 0.23, 1.27, 1.29, 1.53, and 1.74, respectively, using multivariate logistic regression analyses. Homozygous GG was demonstrated to be associated with the presence of atherosclerosis in our population.
Diffusion-annihilation proecesses in weighted scale-free networks with identical degree sequence

Abstract: The studies based on $A+A \rightarrow \emptyset$ and $A+B\rightarrow \emptyset$ diffusion-annihilation processes have so far been studied on weighted uncorrelated scale-free networks and fractal scale-free networks. In the previous reports, it is widely accepted that the segregation of particles in the processes is introduced by the fractal structure. In this paper, we study these processes on a family of weighted scale-free networks with identical degree sequence. We find that the depletion zone and segregation are essentially caused by the disassortative mixing, namely, high-degree nodes tend to connect with low-degree nodes. Their influence on the processes is governed by the correlation between the weight and degree. Our finding suggests both the weight and degree distribution don't suffice to characterize the diffusion-annihilation processes on weighted scale-free networks.
Rumor Evolution in Social Networks

Abstract: Social network is a main tunnel of rumor spreading. Previous studies are concentrated on a static rumor spreading. The content of the rumor is invariable during the whole spreading process. Indeed, the rumor evolves constantly in its spreading process, which grows shorter, more concise, more easily grasped and told. In an early psychological experiment, researchers found about 70% of details in a rumor were lost in the first 6 mouth-to-mouth transmissions \cite{TPR}. Based on the facts, we investigate rumor spreading on social networks, where the content of the rumor is modified by the individuals with a certain probability. In the scenario, they have two choices, to forward or to modify. As a forwarder, an individual disseminates the rumor directly to its neighbors. As a modifier, conversely, an individual revises the rumor before spreading it out. When the rumor spreads on the social networks, for instance, scale-free networks and small-world networks, the majority of individuals actually are infected by the multi-revised version of the rumor, if the modifiers dominate the networks. Our observation indicates that the original rumor may lose its influence in the spreading process. Similarly, a true information may turn to be a rumor as well. Our result suggests the rumor evolution should not be a negligible question, which may provide a better understanding of the generation and destruction of a rumor.

Using Dashboard for Lean Revenue Cycle Management  [PDF]

Lean methodologies are increasingly deployed by healthcare providers to improve billing and collection process in revenue cycle management. Measurement on key performance metrics generates large amount of data. Traditional tabular and spreadsheet form analytics are not efficient to support enterprise scale lean improvement sustainability. This paper introduces a new breed of visual dashboard technology and its value as emerging differentiator from traditional business intelligence, especially in the rapid deployment and usability perspective. We present an exemplary case of using QlikView dashboard for lean revenue cycle management. Initial evaluation result is promising and indicates the dashboard empowers end users with intuitive and interactive experience, ad-hoc questions and answers. Integrating performance dashboard with enterprise data governance, predictive modeling will be evaluated further in future study.

Hierarchical MAS Based Control Strategy for Microgrid

Abstract: Microgrids have become a hot topic driven by the dual pressures of environmental protection concerns and the energy crisis. In this paper, a challenge for the distributed control of a modern electric grid incorporating clusters of residential microgrids is elaborated and a hierarchical multi-agent system (MAS) is proposed as a solution. The issues of how to realize the hierarchical MAS and how to improve coordination and control strategies are discussed. Based on MATLAB and ZEUS platforms, bilateral switching between grid-connected mode and island mode is performed under control of the proposed MAS to enhance and support its effectiveness.
The NALP3 inflammasome is involved in neurotoxic prion peptide-induced microglial activation

Abstract: The inflammasome components NALP3 and apoptosis-associated speck-like protein (ASC) were knocked down by gene silencing. IL-1β production was assessed using ELISA. The mRNA expression of NALP3, ASC, and pro-inflammatory factors was measured by quantitative PCR. Western blot analysis was used to detect the protein level of NALP3, ASC, caspase-1 and nuclear factor-κB.We found that that PrP106-126-induced IL-1β release depends on NALP3 inflammasome activation, that inflammasome activation is required for the synthesis of pro-inflammatory and chemotactic factors by PrP106-126-activated microglia, that inhibition of NF-κB activation abrogated PrP106-126-induced NALP3 upregulation, and that potassium efflux and production of reactive oxygen species were implicated in PrP106-126-induced NALP3 inflammasome activation in microglia.We conclude that the NALP3 inflammasome is involved in neurotoxic prion peptide-induced microglial activation. To our knowledge, this is the first time that strong evidence for the involvement of NALP3 inflammasome in prion-associated inflammation has been found.Prion diseases, also known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, are fatal neurodegenerative disorders, characterized by brain vacuolation, neuronal cell death, and microgliosis [1]. They are caused by the conversion of cellular prion protein (PrPC) into the pathological isoform (PrPSc) through conformational changes. PrPSc is protease-resistant, and has a higher proportion of β-sheet structure in place of the normal α-helix structure [2]. The accumulation of abnormal forms of prion protein (PrPSc) has been shown to be the main causative agent of these diseases [3].The neurotoxic PrP fragment 106–126 (PrP106-126) possesses similar physicochemical and pathogenic properties to PrPSc, in that it forms amyloid fibrils with a high β-sheet content, shows partial proteinase K resistance, and is neurotoxic in vitro.
