Abstract: In the title chalcone derivative, C20H22O6, the dihedral angle between the mean planes of the benzene rings is 15.77 (6)°. The H atoms of the central C=C double bond are in a trans configuration. There are a number of C—H...O interactions and a C—H...π interaction present in the crystal structure.

Abstract: In the title compound, C18H18O4, a derivative of biologically active chalcones, the dihedral angle between the two rings is 7.43 (7)°. The molecule adopts an E configuration about the central olefinic bonds. In the crystal, there are no strong interactions between the molecules.

Abstract: Nanocrystalline titanium dioxide (TiO2) was synthesized in microemulsions by using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as surfactant. In order to investigate the crystal transformation and photoactivity at low temperature, the as-prepared precipitates were aged at 65°C or calcined at various temperatures. Analyses using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared microscopy (FT-IR) showed that precursors without aging or calcination were noncrystal and adsorbed by surfactant. After aging for 6 h, the amorphous TiO2 began to change into anatase. The obtained catalysts, which were synthesized in microemulsions with weight ratios of n-hexanol/CTAB/water as 6 : 3 : 1 and calcined at 500°C, presented the highest photocatalytic degradation rate on methyl orange (MO), while the catalysts, which were aged at 65°C for 90 h, also exhibited an outstanding photocatalytic performance and a little higher than that of the commercial titania photocatalyst Degussa P25.

Abstract: Preliminary study on the mechanism of Pd2+ biosorption by resting cells of Bacillus licheniformis R08 biomass has been carried out by means of chemical kinetics and AAS, TEM, XRD and FTIR methods. The results showed that at 30°C and pH 3.5, when dry R08 biomass powder (800 mg/L) was mixed with Pd2+ (100 mg/L) for 45 min, the rate constant k of biosorption of Pd2+ attained a maximum of 5.97 × 10 2 min 1 and the half life period of the reaction reached 12 min. The part of Pd2+ adsorbed by R08 biomass was reduced to elemental, cell-bound Pd at the same condition. The cell wall of R08 biomass was the primary location for accumulating Pd2+, and aldoses, i. e. hydrolysate of a part of polysaccharides on the peptidoglycan layer in the acidic medium, serving as the electron donor, in situ reduced the Pd2+ to Pd0.

Abstract: In this paper, we try to answer two questions about any given scientific discipline: First, how important is each subfield and second, how does a specific subfield influence other subfields? We modify the well-known open-system Leontief Input-Output Analysis in economics into a closed-system analysis focusing on eigenvalues and eigenvectors and the effects of removing one subfield. We apply this method to the subfields of physics. This analysis has yielded some promising results for identifying important subfields (for example the field of statistical physics has large influence while it is not among the largest subfields) and describing their influences on each other (for example the subfield of mechanical control of atoms is not among the largest subfields cited by quantum mechanics, but our analysis suggests that these fields are strongly connected). This method is potentially applicable to more general systems that have input-output relations among their elements.

Influence of uron resins on the performance of UF resins as adhesives for plywood

Abstract: uron resin, a kind of urea-formaldehyde (uf) resin containing much more uron structure, were prepared. several modified uf resins were obtained from mixing uron resins with normal uf resins as well as synthesizing uf resin with uron resin as raw material. this work demonstrated that the introducing of the uron structure reduced free formaldehyde content of uf resin and formaldehyde emission levels in bonded plywood panels significantly, the former were reduced by 76% and 84% in the latter. the synthesis time of uron resin can be shortened to 8 hours. the test result of free formaldehyde content, formaldehyde emission levels and bond strength indicated that specimen of 20 parts uron resin synthesized in 8 hours mixed with 100 parts uf resins (f/u molar ratio of 1.3) had a potential advantage to industrial application. the beneficial effect of uron resin on the performance of uf resin can be attributed to the opening of uron cycle structure and the following reaction with free formaldehyde and its oligomeric glycol forms.

Abstract: We developed a novel microfluidic cell chip, which enabled drug delivery, fluid control and cell co-culture. The device consisted of an array of 6×6 cell culture chambers, a drug gradient generator and fluidic control valves. Micro-dam structures of the chambers were able to trap cells while loading and drug gradient network generated drug gradient of 6 different concentrations. Also we applied hydraulic valves to control the microfluid and simulate the microenvironment of cells. We had investigated the viability of co-culturing cells in the chip and the ability for drug screening. This microfluidic cell chip has the potential in cell-based research of high throughput drug screening.
