Global Convergence of a Spectral Conjugate Gradient Method for Unconstrained Optimization

Abstract: A new nonlinear spectral conjugate descent method for solving unconstrained optimization problems is proposed on the basis of the CD method and the spectral conjugate gradient method. For any line search, the new method satisfies the sufficient descent condition <?‖‖2. Moreover, we prove that the new method is globally convergent under the strong Wolfe line search. The numerical results show that the new method is more effective for the given test problems from the CUTE test problem library (Bongartz et al., 1995) in contrast to the famous CD method, FR method, and PRP method.

The Influence of Deleterious Mutations on Adaptation in Asexual Populations

Abstract: We study the dynamics of adaptation in asexual populations that undergo both beneficial and deleterious mutations. In particular, how the deleterious mutations affect the fixation of beneficial mutations was investigated. Using extensive Monte Carlo simulations, we find that in the “strong-selection weak mutation (SSWM)” regime or in the “clonal interference (CI)” regime, deleterious mutations rarely influence the distribution of “selection coefficients of the fixed mutations (SCFM)”; while in the “multiple mutations” regime, the accumulation of deleterious mutations would lead to a decrease in fitness significantly. We conclude that the effects of deleterious mutations on adaptation depend largely on the supply of beneficial mutations. And interestingly, the lowest adaptation rate occurs for a moderate value of selection coefficient of deleterious mutations.

Immobilised Histidine Tagged β2-Adrenoceptor Oriented by a Diazonium Salt Reaction and Its Application in Exploring Drug-Protein Interaction Using Ephedrine and Pseudoephedrine as Probes

Abstract: A new oriented method using a diazonium salt reaction was developed for linking β2-adrenoceptor (β2-AR) on the surface of macroporous silica gel. Stationary phase containing the immobilised receptor was used to investigate the interaction between β2-AR and ephedrine plus pseudoephedrine by zonal elution. The isotherms of the two drugs best fit the Langmuir model. Only one type of binding site was found for ephedrine and pseudoephedrine targeting β2-AR. At 37 °C, the association constants during the binding were (5.94±0.05)×103/M for ephedrine and (3.80±0.02) ×103/M for pseudoephedrine, with the binding sites of (8.92±0.06) ×10?4 M. Thermodynamic studies showed that the binding of the two compounds to β2-AR was a spontaneous reaction with exothermal processes. The ΔGθ, ΔHθ and ΔSθ for the interaction between ephedrine and β2-AR were ?(22.33±0.04) kJ/mol, ?(6.51±0.69) kJ/mol and 50.94±0.31 J/mol·K, respectively. For the binding of pseudoephedrine to the receptor, these values were ?(21.17±0.02) kJ/mol, ?(7.48±0.56) kJ/mol and 44.13±0.01 J/mol·K. Electrostatic interaction proved to be the driving force during the binding of the two drugs to β2-AR. The proposed immobilised method will have great potential for attaching protein to solid substrates and realizing the interactions between proteins and drugs.

Abstract: Silk fibroin (SF) fibers were modified with sulfonated polyaniline and, via an in situ redox technique, a high density of gold (Au) nanoparticles were supported directly on the surface of the fiber. The morphology, formation, and application of the as-prepared product, Au/SPANI-modified SF composite fiber, were investigated. By controlling the concentration of HAuCl4, the density of Au nanoparticles on the composite fiber could be effectively adjusted. It is suggested that sulfonated polyaniline contributes to the generation of a high density of Au nanoparticles supported on the SF fibers. The composite fiber exhibited good activity when taking the reduction of p-nitrophenol as a model reaction.

Abstract: By means of high resolution particle-tracking autoradiography the regularity of boron segregation to austenite grain boundaries has been studied, and the boron concentration profiles across segregated grain boundaries and characteristic parameters for non-equilibrium grain boundary segregation (width of boron-depleted zone, degree and width of boron-segregated band) have been measured. It has been shown that this kind of grain boundary segregation has following features:There exists boron-depleted zone adjacent to segregated grain boundary, which is responsible for supplying of boron to grain boundary during cooling. This kind ofl segregation during cooling is very sensitive to cooling rate. Rapid cooling can inhibit it, and the segregation state would progressively develop from continuous band to discontinuous aggregation and even apparent precipitation as cooling rate decreases. The width of boron-depleted zone is inversely proportional to the square root of cooling rate. The temperature relationship of segregation opposites to the expectation of equilibrium grain boundary segregation. The higher the quenching temperature, the more incremental are the segregated degree and the width of boron depleted zone.The test has been demonstrated that the boron segregation at austenite grain boundaries in quenched steel is a non-equilibrium grain boundary segregation phenomena occurred during cooling.
