Recovery of vanadium and molybdenum from spent petrochemical catalyst by microwave-assisted leaching

Abstract: The study of the leaching of vanadium (V) and molybdenum (Mo) from spent petrochemical catalysts in sodium hydroxide (NaOH) medium was performed using two approaches, namely, conventional leaching and microwave-assisted leaching methods. The influence of microwave power, leaching time, leaching temperature, and NaOH concentration on the leaching efficiency of spent petrochemical catalyst was investigated. Under microwave-assisted conditions (600 W, 10 min, 90°C, 2.0 mol·L?1 NaOH, and 0.20 g·mL?1 solid-liquid ratio), the leaching efficiencies of V and Mo reached 94.35% and 96.23%, respectively. It has been confirmed that microwave energy has considerable potential to enhance the efficiency of the leaching process and reduce the leaching time. It is suggested that the enhancement of the leaching efficiencies of V and Mo can be attributed to the existence of a thermal gradient between solid and liquid and the generation of cracks on the mineral surface.

VEGF Receptor Blockade Markedly Reduces Retinal Microglia/Macrophage Infiltration into Laser-Induced CNV

Abstract: Although blocking VEGF has a positive effect in wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the effect of blocking its receptors remains unclear. This was an investigation of the effect of VEGF receptor (VEGFR) 1 and/or 2 blockade on retinal microglia/macrophage infiltration in laser-induced choroidal neovascularization (CNV), a model of wet AMD. CNV lesions were isolated by laser capture microdissection at 3, 7, and 14 days after laser and analyzed by RT-PCR and immunofluorescence staining for mRNA and protein expression, respectively. Neutralizing antibodies for VEGFR1 or R2 and the microglia inhibitor minocycline were injected intraperitoneally (IP). Anti-CD11b, CD45 and Iba1 antibodies were used to confirm the cell identity of retinal microglia/macrophage, in the RPE/choroidal flat mounts or retinal cross sections. CD11b(+), CD45(+) or Iba1(+) cells were counted. mRNA of VEGFR1 and its three ligands, PlGF, VEGF-A (VEGF) and VEGF–B, were expressed at all stages, but VEGFR2 were detected only in the late stage. PlGF and VEGF proteins were expressed at 3 and 7 days after laser. Anti-VEGFR1 (MF1) delivered IP 3 days after laser inhibited infiltration of leukocyte populations, largely retinal microglia/macrophage to CNV, while anti-VEGFR2 (DC101) had no effect. At 14 days after laser, both MF1 and DC101 antibodies markedly inhibited retinal microglia/macrophage infiltration into CNV. Therefore, VEGFR1 and R2 play differential roles in the pathogenesis of CNV: VEGFR1 plays a dominant role at 3 days after laser; but both receptors play pivotal roles at 14 days after laser. In vivo imaging demonstrated accumulation of GFP-expressing microglia into CNV in both CX3CR1gfp/gfp and CX3CR1gfp/+ mice. Minocycline treatment caused a significant increase in lectin+ cells in the sub-retinal space anterior to CNV and a decrease in dextran-perfused neovessels compared to controls. Targeting the chemoattractant molecules that regulate trafficking of retinal microglia/macrophage appears to be a compelling therapeutic strategy to control CNV and treat wet AMD.

Abstract: Degradation of Bi4Ti3O12 ferroelectricity during forming gas annealing is investigated by the first-principles method based on the density functional theory(DFT) the generalized gradient approximation(GGA). We calculate the variations of total energy with the displacement of Ti along the c axis, electron density and total density of states in hydrogen-free and hydrogenated models. The results show that the electron densities of Ti-O and Bi-O exhibit significant changes between the Bi4Ti3O12 ferroelectric phases for the hydrogenated and hydrogen-free cases, and the strong hybridization between H and O is favorable to the formation of a convalent bond. The total energy of ferroelectric phase for the hydrogenated case is bigger than that of paraelectric phase because hydrogen incorporation into the lattice has a direct effect on polarization pinning by possibly forming a hydroxyl bond. This demonstrates that hydrogen introduction during forming gas annealing hinders the phase transition of the Bi4Ti3O12 from tetragonal paraelectricity to orthogonal ferroelectricity, and electrical conductivity of Bi4Ti3O12 is increased. This may be an important factor causing severe degradation of Bi4Ti3O12 ferroelectricity.
Analysis of figure of merit for thick pinhole imaging

Abstract: A figure of merit (FOM) for thick pinhole imaging and its formula are developed. The FOM can describe the total spatial resolution and sensitivity of thick pinhole imaging. Based on the penetration model, the root-mean-square of point spread function and the effective diameter at the center are derived. FOMs at the total and effective field of view are calculated. Based on the figures, the characteristics of thick pinhole imaging are discussed.
