Abstract This paper deals with the initial experimentation in search of technological solutions for the PAUER-PAULEX platform for the delivery of the University Entrance Examination (PAU) in Spain through Internet. PAUER is a computer platform used for foreign language assessment that integrates the information and communication technologies (ICT) in the teaching and knowledge assessment. The platform is one of the main outcomes of the Paulex-Universitas research project of which the main goal is to analyze the feasibility of ICT in the creation, development and rating of the foreign language test in the PAU. This paper presents the results of the field experimentation for which a qualitative approach has been used. 280 students in their last high school year, as well as teachers and researchers, have taken par in this process. The experimentation concludes that the computer based tests can be a valid alternative to the current pen and paper test despite the constraints hereby presented.
Teacher training through the Regression Model in foreign language education

International Journal of Human Sciences , 2011,
Abstract: In the last few years, Spain has seen dramatic changes in its educational system. Many of these changes have been rejected by most teachers after their implementation (LOGSE) while others have found potential drawbacks even before starting operating (LOCE, LOE). To face these changes, schools need well qualified instructors. Given this need, and also considering that, although all the schools want the best teachers but, as teachers’ salaries are regulated by the state, few schools can actually offer incentives to their teachers and consequently schools never have the instructors they wish. Apart from this, state schools have a fixed salary for their teachers and private institutions offer no additional bonuses for things like additional training or diplomas (for example, masters or post-degree courses) and, therefore, teachers are rarely interested in pursuing any further studies in methodology or any other related fields such as education or applied linguistics. Although many teachers acknowledge their love to teaching, the current situation in schools (school violence, bad salaries, depression, social desprestige, legal changes and so) has made the teaching job one of the most complicated and undevoted in Spain. It is not unusual to have a couple of instructors ill due to depression and other psychological sicknesses. This paper deals with the development and implementation of a training program based on regressive visualizations of one’s experience both as a teacher as well as a learner.

Preliminary Findings of the PAULEX Project: A Proposal for the Internet-based Valencian University Entrance Examination

Journal of Language Teaching and Research , 2012, DOI: 10.4304/jltr.3.2.250-255
Abstract: Although there is an increasing number of online tests in the world, little research is currently known in Spain today. Assessment has become an integral part of education and the implications of the various uses of language testing go beyond the educational settings (Douglas, 2010; Fulcher, 2010). This study describes the PAULEX project. This project deals with the design and validation of a computer-based University Entrance examination for Spanish universities. The test measures the students’ oral and written competence including tasks on four different skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. This paper will address some specific features and reaction studies that are already in process. It is by no means this paper’s object to give detailed information of each individual aspect but instead to give an overview of what has been done so far and provide concepts of the current research. In doing so, the paper is divided into three main sections: technological advances, attitudinal observations and results.
Fractal Dimension of Dog Kidney Proximal Convoluted Tubuli Sections by Mean Box-Counting Algorithm

Abstract: the possibility of characterizing the proximal convoluted tubuli of the dog kidney by means of a unique and objective value, is an attractive idea in order to automate its recognition in anatomy and patology. for this, we obtained a fractal dimension of the proximal convoluted tubuli in the dog kidney by mean box-counting method. the fractal value we obtained is a flat dimension, and it is different than the line fractal dimension of the dog kidney arterial pattern, which was previously calculated by us (gil et al., 2006). thus, from optical microscopy images, we are able to obtain a single quantitative measure to discriminate these dog kidney components. this measures can use to automate its recognition. fractal geometry provides many advantages when examining the complex microscopical images of natural objects

RLA. Revista de lingüística teórica y aplicada , 2008, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-48832008000200005
Abstract: this paper aims at showing the constraints and benefits both from an institutional and the test user’s perspectives of automatizing the diploma in spanish as a foreign language (dele). the article addresses computational and language issues such as web design, language use realities and, overall, it proves the need to implement such a project. it also shows that whether the dele exam is to put into functioning, it needs to satisfy these three areas: design, language scope and technology improvement and adequacy. in this sense, the implementation of a computer based test may be seen as a beneficial tool that permits to evaluate the four traditional skills plus language use more efficiently than the current pencil & paper system.

Abstract: We have developed a new algorithm to calculate the fractal dimension of dog kidney proximal convoluted tubule section. This algorithm is intermediate between box-counting and perimeter-stepping algorithms. The result of this new algorithm and correlations found between fractal dimensions and other Euclidian values of these tubuli, suggest that this algorithm is adequate to calculate fractal dimensions by points Hemos desarrollado un nuevo algoritmo para calcular la dimensión fractal de las secciones de los túbulos contorneados proximales del ri ón de perro.
