Capturing the Data: Nutrition Risk Screening of Adults in Hospital
Elizabeth Frew,Robyn Cant,Jennifer Sequeira
Nutrients , 2010, DOI: 10.3390/nu2040438
Abstract: This study aims to explore limitations with the Malnutrition Screening Tool in identifying malnutrition risk, in a cohort of 3,033 adult Australian medical and surgical hospital inpatients. Seventy-two percent of patients were screened; illness and medical care limited access to others. Malnutrition risk (16.5%; n = 501) was found in all age groups with a trend to higher risk in medical wards; 10% (n = 300) of patients with communication barriers were excluded. Systematic screening increased dietitians’ referrals by 39%. Further research is required to enable screening of all patients, including those with communication issues with an easy to use valid tool.
A Regi?o Vinhateira do Alto Douro, entre o livre-cambismo e o proteccionismo
Sequeira,Carla;
Universum (Talca) , 2006, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-23762006000200009
Abstract: in 1865, the state established a free-trade policy regarding the upper douro wine-growing region, which had benefited from a protectionist regime since its demarcation, in the second half of the 18th century. this new reality, together with the emergence of vine phylloxera and business competitors in which both internal and external frauds and counterfeits abounded, gave rise to a profound crisis. in view of this change in the economic and cultural scenario, successive protests arose, demanding the return to the protectionist regime of the demarcated douro region, clashing directly with the interests of other socio-economic groups, particularly viticulturists in the south and groups associated to cereal farming, which were closer to the central authority and exerted great pressure upon the state

In 1865, the State established a free-trade policy regarding the Upper Douro wine-growing region, which had benefited from a protectionist regime since its demarcation, in the second half of the 18th century. Increased oxidative stress and altered antioxidants status in patients with chronic allergic rhinitis  [PDF]
Shiefa Sequeira, Ashalatha V. Rao, Anjali Rao
Advances in Bioscience and Biotechnology (ABB) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/abb.2012.327117
Abstract: Background: Allergic rhinitis is an inflammatory disorder of the upper airways. Although several oxidants and antioxidants are likely to be involved, alterations in only limited parameters have been studied. Objective: In this study an attempt has been made to study the oxidant-antioxidant imbalance by investigating changes in a wide range of oxidants and antioxidants in the blood. Methods: Blood samples were obtained from 39 chronic allergic rhinitis patients (males 24, females 15), aged 20-70 (mean age 36.33 ± 2.03) years and 53 individuals (36 males, 17 females); aged 24 to 64 (mean age 45.42 ± 1.36) years. Duration of allergic rhinitis was 1.77 ± 0.237 years. In the study group, nasal symptoms were scored and the results were recorded. The patients were classified as having perennial Allergic rhinitis (PAR) if they had had at least 2 rhinitis symptoms (sneezing, rhinorrhea, nasal obstruction, itching) for at least 6 months a year in the previous 2 years and if they had a positive skin prick test response to at least 1 clinically significant perennial allergen (e.g., house dust mites, molds, cockroach, cockroach excrement grass and tree pollen, cat and dog epithelia and molds, or animal dander). They had no other allergic diseases except persistent allergic rhinitis diagnosed by the physical and history examination. Erythrocyte lipid peroxidation, erythrocyte antioxidants viz., glutathione, glutathione reductase, superoxide dismutase, catalase and plasma antioxidants viz., ceruloplasmin, glutathione-S-transferase, vitamin C, total antioxidant activity were estimated in the above two groups. Results: Erythrocyte lipid peroxidation (0 hour, p < 0.01) and superoxide dismutase (p < 0.01) were significantly higher, whereas plasma vitamin C (p < 0.001), ceruloplasmin (p < 0.05) and total antioxidant activity (p < 0.001) were significantly lower in chronic allergic rhinitis patients when compared to controls. Plasma Glutathione S transferase and erythrocyte catalase, glutathione, and glutathione reductase remained unchanged from normal subjects. Conclusion: The changes in different parameters indicate an imbalance in the oxidant and antioxidant status in chronic allergic rhinitis patients. Further studies are required to investigate the potential for antioxidant supplements to be used as routine therapy in chronic allergic rhinitis patients. Capsule summery: The study shows that the body is trying to cope for the oxidative stress by altering the enzyme levels. But external supplement may also be required as the total antioxidant levels are
Meditation as a Potential Therapy for Autism: A Review
Sonia Sequeira,Mahiuddin Ahmed
Autism Research and Treatment , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/835847
Abstract: Autism is a chronic neurodevelopmental disorder of unknown cause that affects approximately 1–3 percent of children and four times more boys than girls. Its prevalence is global and its social impact is devastating. In autism, the brain is unable to process sensory information normally. Instead, simple stimuli from the outside world are experienced as overwhelmingly intense and strain the emotional centers of the brain. A stress response to the incoming information is initiated that destabilizes cognitive networks and short-circuits adequate behavioral output. As a result, the child is unable to respond adequately to stimulation and initiate social behavior towards family, friends, and peers. In addition, these children typically face immune-digestive disorders that heighten social fears, anxieties, and internal conflicts. While it is critical to treat the physical symptoms, it is equally vital to offer an evidence-based holistic solution that harmonizes both their emotional and physical well-being as they move from childhood into adult life. Here, we summarize evidence from clinical studies and neuroscience research that suggests that an approach built on yogic principles and meditative tools is worth pursuing. Desired outcomes include relief of clinical symptoms of the disease, greater relaxation, and facilitated expression of feelings and skills, as well as improved family and social quality of life. 1. Background Autism belongs to a group of related disorders that starts in infancy and remains throughout adult life [1]. Impaired social interaction at a young age affects early milestones of human development and a myriad of immune deficiencies will also afflict the majority of these children [2–8] The etiology of autism is not known. However, it is currently agreed that a combination of genetic and epigenetic factors, contribute to autism, the first trimester of pregnancy being a particularly vulnerable time to triggers of the disease. Autism is characterized by widespread disruption of the brain networks that underlie complex cognitive and emotional functions that results in an imbalanced neurological response to cues from the external world and, particularly, in the way the child responds to stress. A myriad of treatments for autism have been proposed; however, in most cases the existing data are insufficient to support their efficacy [9]. This is primarily due to the confounding complexity of genetic traits of the disease, as well as the difficulty in distinguishing the cause from downstream pathologies. And yet in the United States, the lifetime
Uma possível hierarquiza??o através de um índice de desenvolvimento económico e social dos Concelhos de Portugal Continental
Diniz, Francisco;Sequeira, Teresa;
Intera??es (Campo Grande) , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1518-70122008000100003
Abstract: the aim of this study is to calculate a social and economic development index (sedi), regarding each concelho (nuts iv) of portugal. from there it will move forward to seeking for clusters. results point to coastal areas/hinterland dichotomies as well as the significant asymmetries between each concelho, which suggests the need for a special care in setting up the spatial boundaries prior to its application to regional development policies on behalf of its true effectiveness.
Pedro e o lobo: o criminoso perverso e a pervers?o social
Sequeira, Vania Conselheiro;
Psicologia: Teoria e Pesquisa , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-37722009000200010
Abstract: the objective of this article is to promote a reflection on perversion and its relation with criminality, and to contribute to the comprehension of perversion as a broad mechanism, as a social symptom, and not as something that concerns only the individual. it is adopted the psychoanalytical perspective, in which perversion is understood as a subjective position, and not as a sexual aberration. in the present study, social perversion is viewed as a refuse of the castration, which appears in the social context. the hypothesis is that we live under a social denial, which has two complementary aspects: the negation of the castration by the imperative of the sexual joy, and the contradiction of the social contract by the fallacy of the citizenship. both aspects generate consequences concerning the nowadays subjectivation.
Gestión Institucional Basada en la Evidencia: el Caso de la CCSS
Molina,Ana; Sequeira,Deyanira;
PRODUCTIVE SPECIALIZATION AND REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN PORTUGAL AT THE NUTS III LEVEL
Francisco Diniz,Teresa Sequeira
Romanian Journal of Regional Science , 2009,
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to analyse how the specialization of Portuguese productive structures has evolved between 1995 and 2004, using specialization indicators, namely localization quotient estimation, to assess both the relative degree of concentration of a given activity in a certain area and the specialization coefficient, that helps characterize a region’s economy according to its degree of specialization. The Theil Index, together with the diversification/specialization degree of each region was also taken into consideration in this analysis. Reference variables for specialization analysis purposes were Gross Value Added and Employment in an attempt to compare differences observed with productivities, which, in turn, are related to purchasing power evolution within each territorial unit. The main aim of this study was, then, a thorough research into the time-spatial relationship between specialization, productivity and development.
