Abstract: Davidson Seamount is located about 80 km off the central California coast in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. It is one of the better-explored seamounts in the world, having been sampled and observed during 32 dives by the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Tiburon. These dives mapped the bottom substrate and biological communities, and collected over 280 rock samples and nearly as many benthic animals.

Abstract: A Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) has been observed in magnetic insulators in the last decade. The bosons that condensed are magnons, associated with an ordered magnetic phase induced by a magnetic field. We review the experiments in the spin-gap compound NiCl2-4SC(NH2)2, in which the formation of BEC occurs by applying a magnetic field at low temperatures. This is a contribution to the celebration for the 50th anniversary of the Solid State and Low Temperature Laboratory of the University of S\~ao Paulo, where this compound was first magnetically characterized.

Abstract: children's knowledge acquisition initially occurs by means of external mediation, where an external object to the child, which may be an adult, mediates between her and the content to be acquired. therefore, hospitalization may become a risk factor to children's psychological development, in both the cognitive and affective realms, in case their potentialities are not mediated by the health team, which maintains a close contact with children during such period. the knowledge concerning the child development process by the health professionals involved in the care of children hospitalized in a public university hospital in s?o paulo state was investigated. the participants were eleven professionals, including technical and nursing assistants, and the results indicated that such professionals considered some of the aspects regarding child care to be important, such as language stimulation, attention, playing, bonding, physical contact, but they did not recognize such aspects as important for child development and elected specific professionals to be responsible for aspects of child development at the hospital, not realizing themselves as mediators in the psychosocial development process of hospitalized children.

Tea is the second most consumed beverage in the world, following water. Black, oolong, and green tea are products of a perennial tree or shrub called Camellia sinensis. Camellia sinensis is native to Mainland China and is referenced in Chinese literature at least 5000 years ago. Since its discovery, green tea has been heralded as having several health benefits associated with its consumption. Traditionally, green tea has been used for a variety of medicinal purposes, such as the prevention and treatment of a variety of cancers, mental alertness, weight loss, lowering cholesterol level, and UV protection. Studies have shown that catechins, the polyphenols found in tealeaves, are effective as anti-infectious agents by affecting the infection process instead of specifically targeting the virus. This treatment strategy has the potential of reducing the prevalence of drug-resistant viruses and the reliance on anti-viral drug therapies. This paper will explore the efficacy of green tea in preventing infections by the hepatitis B and C, influenza and human immunodeficiency virus.

Abstract: Severe bronchospasm and anaphylaxis are unanticipated emergencies that may occur in the ambulatory surgery setting. I present a case in which an asthmatic male with nasal congestion has anaphylaxis after induction, with severe bronchospasm as the primary manifestation. During the course of hospitalization, he was exposed to aspirin and a second episode of severe bronchospasm occurred. He was diagnosed with both anaphylaxis to an anesthetic medication and Aspirin Exacerbated Respiratory Disease, or Samter’s Triad.

Abstract: the interest for melon culture in brazil has increased in the last years, due to growing exportations and increment for the internal market consumption. the aim of this work was to evaluate the physical and chemical characteristics of five melon types (cucumis melo l.), produced under protected system, in the municipal district of centenário do sul - pr. the types studied were valenciano ('amarelo ouro'), caipira ('gaúcho caipira'), net melon ('net galia'), orange ('orange melon') e pele de sapo ('filipo'), with five repetitions, in a completely randomized design. the valenciano and pele de sapo stood out in weight terms, with values of 2.02 and 2.07 kg, respectively, and elongated formats; while the others types showed round formats and weight around 1.4 kg. the pele de sapo showed pulp thickness of 43.36 mm, statistically higher than valenciano, 38.98 mm. the smallest pulp thickness, 24.78 mm, and the largest thickness of the peel, 9.74 mm, had been found in the caipira and it is statistically differed from other types. the ph values had not shown statistically differences among themselves, ranging between 6.24 and 6.48. the net melon showed pulp with 12.3obrix, and statistically differed from the orange, valenciano and pele de sapo with levels of 11.12, 10.34 and 9.94obrix, respectively. the caipira reached 5.06obrix and also the smallest acidity, 0.10g citric acid per 100g of juice, which would not turned out for its commercialization. the pectin methyl esterase pulp activity in the fruits was very low, inferior of 0,005 peu x 104 ml-1, in the five evaluated types. in the north of the state of paraná (paranapanema valle), under protect system conditions, the melons types: net melon, orange, valenciano and pele de sapo showed good physical and chemical characteristics, standing out the net melon for its total soluble solids over 12obrix.

Welding of AA1050 aluminum with AISI 304 stainless steel by rotary friction welding process

Abstract: The purpose of this work was to assess the development of solid state joints of dissimilar material AA1050 aluminum and AISI 304 stainless steel, which can be used in pipes of tanks of liquid propellants and other components of the Satellite Launch Vehicle. The joints were obtained by rotary friction welding process (RFW), which combines the heat generated from friction between two surfaces and plastic deformation. Tests were conducted with different welding process parameters. The results were analyzed by means of tensile tests, Vickers microhardness, metallographic tests and SEM-EDX. The strength of the joints varied with increasing friction time and the use of different pressure values. Joints were obtained with superior mechanical properties of the AA1050 aluminum, with fracture occurring in the aluminum away from the bonding interface. The analysis by EDX at the interface of the junction showed that interdiffusion occurs between the main chemical components of the materials involved. The RFW proves to be a great method for obtaining joints between dissimilar materials, which is not possible by fusion welding processes.
Bose-Einstein condensation in antiferromagnets close to the saturation field

Abstract: At zero temperature and strong applied magnetic fields the ground sate of an anisotropic antiferromagnet is a saturated paramagnet with fully aligned spins. We study the quantum phase transition as the field is reduced below an upper critical $H_{c2}$ and the system enters a XY-antiferromagnetic phase. Using a bond operator representation we consider a model spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic with single-ion anisotropy in hyper-cubic lattices under strong magnetic fields. We show that the transition at $H_{c2}$ can be interpreted as a Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of magnons. The theoretical results are used to analyze our magnetization versus field data in the organic compound $NiCl_2$-$4SC(NH_2)_2$ (DTN) at very low temperatures. This is the ideal BEC system to study this transition since $H_{c2}$ is sufficiently low to be reached with static magnetic fields (as opposed to pulsed fields). The scaling of the magnetization as a function of field and temperature close to $H_{c2}$ shows excellent agreement with the theoretical predictions. It allows to obtain the quantum critical exponents and confirm the BEC nature of the transition at $H_{c2}$.

Abstract: Nanoparticles are considered as powerful tools in nanotechnological applications. Due to their unique physicochemical properties, their interactions with different biological systems have been shown. Nanomaterials have been successfully used as coating materials or treatment and diagnosis tools. Nevertheless, toxic effects of nanoparticles in vitro and in vivo have also been reported. Here, we summarize the current state of knowledge on exposure routes, cellular uptake and toxicological activities of the commonly used nanoparticles. In this context, we discuss the mechanisms of toxicity of nanoparticles involving perturbation of redox milieu homeostasis and cellular signaling pathways.
