Ecologia Balkanica , 2011,
Abstract: The predominant soil types in the region of Kardzhali are maroon forest soils highly leached and poorly podzolized. Most of the soils have medium to high erosion ability IIIII degree, and the pH is neutral to slightly alkaline (77,8). Few are weak and moderate acidic pH (6,75). Soils are mostly shallow to moderately deep, poor in nutrients. In the region of Kardzhali main pollutants are heavy metals from miningprocessing and metallurgical business activities of “GorubsoKardzhali” AD and LZC AD, Kardzhali. In the paper are presented results of soil contamination mainly with lead, cadmium, copper and zinc, showing concentrations of lead in the soil over the MAC, according to Ordinance № 3/2008 Standards for acceptable content of harmful substances in soil.
Inter- and intra-population genetic variability of introduced silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) strains raised in Bulgaria
Teodora Staykova
Journal of BioScience and Biotechnology , 2013,
Abstract: The genetic variability of four populations belonging to two introduced silkworm strains (Bombyx mori L.) of various origins has been studied using isoenzymic analysis of six enzyme systems. Nonspecific esterases, phosphoglucomutase, malate dehydrogenase, acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase and hexokinase from different tissue of larvae 5th instar have been analysed using PAGE. Polymorphism in six from a total of nine loci has been found. Inter- and intra-population differences have been ascertained expressed in different allele composition of the gene pool and different frequencies of alleles. A higher degree of inter-population variability has been reported on the acid phosphatase and a lower one – on the phosphoglucomutase.
Photoproduction of D* and Jets at H1
Zlatka Staykova
Physics , 2010,
Abstract: Photoproduction events containing a charmed meson $D^{*\pm}$ and two jets were investigated with the H1 detector using the HERA II data sample. The $D^*$ meson was reconstructed in the decay channel, $D^{*\pm}\rightarrow D^0\pi^\pm\rightarrow K^\mp\pi^\pm\pi^\pm$. Jets were reconstructed using the inclusive $k_t$ algorithm and were selected if they have transverse momenta $p_t(\textrm{jet})>3.5\gev$. One of the jets was associated with the $D^*$ meson itself, such that the jet originating from the parent charmed quark as the meson can be tagged. The phase space of the measurement is limited within central rapidity for the $D^*$ meson and the $D^*_\textrm{jet}$, $|\eta|<1.5$ while the second jet was measured within, $-1.5<\eta<2.9$. Single differential cross sections and double differential distributions were measured and compared to Leading Order Monte Carlo (MC) event generators, \PYTHIA and \CASCADE and with the Next--to--Leading order MC generator \MCATNLO
Desigualdades sociais e duas formas de particularismo na sociedade brasileira
Vaitsman, Jeni;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2002000700005
Abstract: based on a discussion by contemporary social theorists concerning brazil's historical formation and its incorporation into a project for a modern society, the article identifies two forms of particularism - differences and personal relations - which limit access to the market and to rights in the public sphere. the particularism of differences produces social and symbolic exclusion, hindering the formation of feelings of belonging and social interdependence, necessary for effective institutionalization of universalism in the public sphere. the particularism of personal relations permeates new institutional arrangements that incorporate participation by society in public policy management. still, although these new arrangements and arenas bear the political and cultural marks of brazil's historical background, they constitute open possibilities for a new equation involving universalism and particularism.
Cultura de organiza??es públicas de saúde: notas sobre a constru??o de um objeto
Vaitsman, Jeni;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2000000300033
Abstract: the author defines some central concepts for construction of the subject of "public health organizations". the concept of culture is exceedingly broad, and must be adjusted to the types of particular phenomena analyzed. as perceived in a public health organization, culture implies phenomena belonging to different social dimensions and which can be grasped through the concepts of political, civic, organizational, and professional culture.
Hierarquia de gênero e iniqüidade em saúde
Vaitsman, Jeni;
Physis: Revista de Saúde Coletiva , 1994, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-73311994000100001
Abstract: the article questions the use of universal categories in analyzing social phenomena and proposes that the significances of such categories be placed into a historical and cultural context. the basis for this discussion is a criticism of the concept of the neutral, universal individual who, through the ideas of equality and autonomy forms the axis of modern western values. the main argument is that the ideas of equality and autonomy have historically gained shape as attributes of the male sex. this is because the genesis of the modern individual precluded an egalitarian expression of sexual difference, which instead found translation in a sex-assigned dichotomy between the public and the private spheres. women are now breaking the boundaries of this dichotomy as part of the emergence of new social subjects, who have placed the idea of "difference" on the contemporary political/cultural agenda. drawing support from a number of authors, the article moves on to discuss the need to overcome the theoretical and political dilemma that reduces the complexity of social relations to dichotomous polarities. lastly, from this perspective it is shown how the gender hierarchy manifest in the public/private dichotomy and in the concept of the neutral individual is related to certain types of iniquities in the realm of health care.

Breed specific expression of gut silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) nonspecific esterases
TEODORA STAYKOVA,PETAR POPOV,EVGENIYA IVANOVA
Journal of BioScience and Biotechnology , 2012,
Abstract: Nonspecific esterases of silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) gut were investigated by means of polyacrilamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). Stage-specific expression of eleven esterase bands was detected during larval development of breeds and inter-breed hybrids kept in Bulgaria. In two esterase zones, intra- and inter-breed polymorphism was found. The polymorphism in fraction GES I1 specific for the gut may be used for testing of the breeds raised in our country with reference to determining the degree of genetic heterogeneity. The specific expression in zone GES L1 observed at present study confirmed gene determinate polymorphism in zone BES E1, observed earlier.
The Role of Volunteering in an Era of Cultural Transition: Can It Provide a Role Identity for Older People from Asian Cultures?
Jeni Warburton,Rachel Winterton
Diversity , 2010, DOI: 10.3390/d2081048
Abstract: In western countries, one of the challenges facing ageing populations is an absence of social roles. One response to this is to volunteer, with evidence suggesting that this assigns meaning to the lives of older people and enhances health and well-being. This holds potential significance for older people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, and particularly those from Asian cultures, where there is evidence that cultural erosion is diminishing older people’s traditional roles. However, while volunteering can create role identities for older people, it may also further challenge existing cultural values. This paper debates these issues, drawing on a growing body of evidence relating to volunteering within Asian cultures.
