Regulation of traditional and complementary medicinal products in Malaysia

Abstract: In Malaysia, mainly there are three complimentary systems of medicine practiced they are the traditional Malay, Chinese and Indian systems. The traditional herbal medicines and their preparations have been widely used in Malaysia for thousands of years. The pervasive use of complementary medicines raises several concerns. Many of these arise because most complementary medicines are not licensed as medicines, and therefore evidence of quality, efficacy and safety is not required before marketing. In this paper, I would like to present an overview of the characteristics of regulation, quality and registration of traditional and complementary medicinal (TCM) products in Malaysia.
Antioxidant and hepatoprotective effect of the roots of Hibiscus esculentus Linn.

Abstract: The ethanol extract of Hibiscus esculentus Linn roots inhibited the formation of oxygen derived free radicals invitro with IC 50 of 620 μg/ml, 2300 μg/ml, 870 μg/ml and 610 μg/ml. [Fe 2+ /ascobate system], 730 μg/ml, [Fe 3+ /ADP/ascorbate system], for superoxide radical production, hydroxyl radical generation, nitric oxide radical formation and lipid peroxide formation respectively. The oral administration of the extract (250 and 500 mg/kg body weight), significantly reduce CCl 4 induced hepatotoxicity in rats, as judged from the serum and tissue activity of marker enzymes [Glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT), Glutamate pyruvate transaminase (GPT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP)]. These results were comparable with standard drug silymarin [20 mg/kg, P.O.)
Validation of a structured questionnaire for COPD and prevalence of COPD in rural area of Mysore: A pilot study

Abstract: Background: The prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is increasing in India and there is a need to study the prevalence of COPD, particularly in the rural areas, which may be most affected due to their lifestyle. Materials and Methods: First stage: Validation of the questionnaire-105 consecutive patients underwent administration of the structured questionnaire and spirometry was used as a gold standard for the diagnosis of COPD. Second stage: Adults above 40 years (n = 900) in two villages of Mysore district were administered with the validated questionnaire, Knowledge and Attitude questionnaire and Fagerstorm questionnaire, to assess nicotine dependency. Results: The questionnaire was found to have a sensitivity of 62.5% and specificity of 87.6% to diagnose COPD. Of the total 900 adults surveyed (Males: 453, Females: 447), the total prevalence of COPD was 7.1%. Males had a higher prevalence (11.1%) compared to females (4.5%). The prevalence of smoking was very high among men at 71.9% and all the women were nonsmokers. The prevalence of COPD was 14.7% in smokers, 19.3% had mild to moderate nicotine dependency and 12.8% were highly dependent. Of the women exposed to regular biomass fuels, the prevalence of COPD was 3.9%, which increased to 4.8% on addition of regular passive smoking. In smoking, male gender and age were significantly associated with COPD ( P < 0.05). Conclusion: The structured questionnaire is a useful tool for the screening of COPD in field studies. Smoking and biomass fuel exposure are important risk factors for COPD.
Gastroprotective and Antioxidant Activities of the Roots of Hibiscus aculeatus Roxb in Rats

Abstract: Ethanol extract of Hibiscus aculeatus (HAE) was assessed in different acute and chronic gastric ulcer models in rats. HAE, 50-200 mg kg-1 administered orally, twice daily for 5 days showed dose-dependent ulcer protective effect in pylorus ligation (9.21-52.63% protection, p<0.05), aspirin (23.95-56.25% protection, p<0.05), ethanol (13.55-58.47% protection, p<0.05), cold-restraint stress (18.34-72.92% protection, p<0.05 to p<0.001) and acetic acid (p<0.05 to p<0.001) induced acute and chronic ulcers. HAE also significantly (p<0.001) reduced the ulcer incidence (40 and 10%) and severity (54.35 and 85.37% protection) of duodenal ulcer, induced by cysteamine. HAE offered protection (49.57 and 58.97%) against ethanol-induced depletion of gastric wall mucus. And also, HAE reduced the ulcer index with significant decrease in plasma corticosterone (21.15 and 33.51% protection, p<0.05), lipid peroxidation (16.66 and 38.88% protection, p<0.01 and p<0.001), superoxide dismutase (17.64 and 47.25% protection, p<0.05 and p<0.001) and an increase in catalase (25.84 and 83.14% protection, p<0.05 and p<0.001) activity respectively. Preliminary phytochemical screening of the HAE showed positive test for flavanoids, terpenoids, steroids, tannins and saponins. The results indicate that HAE possesses gastroprotective and antioxidant activity.

Energy and exergy analysis of a two pass photovoltaic – thermal (PV/T) air heater

Abstract: A double pass hybrid solar air (PV/T) heater with slats is designed and fabricated to study elaborately its thermal and electrical performance corresponding to the warm and humid environment. Air as a heat removing fluid is made to flow through upper and lower channels of the collector. The collector is designed in such way that the absorber plate is partially covered by solar cells. Thin metallic strips (called slats) are attached longitudinally at the bottom side of the absorber plate to improve the overall system performance (by increasing the cooling rate of the absorber plate). Thermal and electrical performances of the whole system at different cooling rates are presented. The exergy analysis of double pass hybrid solar air (PV/T) heater with slats has also been carried out. The instantaneous overall energy and overall exergy efficiency of the double pass hybrid (PV/T) solar air heater varies between 29 – 37% and 14-17% respectively. These obtained values are comparable with that of published results.

Abstract: A new switching-based median filtering scheme for restoration of images that are highly corrupted by salt and pepper noise is proposed. An algorithm based on the scheme is developed. The new scheme introduces the concept of substitution of noisy pixels by linear prediction prior to estimation. A novel simplified linear predictor is developed for this purpose. The objective of the scheme and algorithm is the removal of high-density salt and pepper noise in images. The new algorithm shows significantly better image quality with good PSNR, reduced MSE, good edge preservation, and reduced streaking. The good performance is achieved with reduced computational complexity. A comparison of the performance is made with several existing algorithms in terms of visual and quantitative results. The performance of the proposed scheme and algorithm is demonstrated.
High Reliable secure data collection using Complexity exchanging code key method addressing protocol in Wireless Sensor Network

Abstract: A Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is emerging field in Information and communication technology. In WSN data transmission and data collection are unsecure because of sensor node Incompatibility. So providing security to Sensor network is very important. The key based Mechanism is secure data collection and it's mainly used to guarantee data confidentiality. Range pair wise key is largely used due to the necessary of data encryption and decryption between each pair range of communication node. Fixed key mechanism difficult for the attacker to detect the regularity of the randomly generated key chain function in privacy homomorphism (PH).PH means no intermediate node to encrypt and decrypt only direct collect and aggregate data for encryption and decryption. It is special key based scheme. It's totally based on beta distribution and some statistical tool using key code method by using Complexity exchanging code key method addressing protocol. We show how to reduce significant attacks and secure data collection on wireless sensor network.
