The jellyfish fishery in Mexico  [PDF]

Abstract: Jellyfish has been captured in Asia for 1700 years, and it has been considered a delicacy. Since the 70s important jellyfish fisheries have developed in several parts of the world, with catches increasing exponentially, reaching 500,000 tons per year in the mid-nineties. In Mexico, only the cannonball jellyfish Stomolophus meleagris is captured commercially. Most of the capture of this jellyfish species is obtained within the Gulf of California, specifically in the state of Sonora. The total reported capture in 2010 was 16,581 metric t and 14,220 in 2011. With these capture volumes jellyfish was ranked as the third most important fishing resource in the state of Sonora. The fishing season in Sonora is from April to May; a total of 4 or 5 weeks, and the catch per unit effort is around 3 tons by trip. Currently, there are nine jellyfish marketing companies, with about 20 processing plants distributed along the coast of Sonora, primarily in Guaymas, Kino Bay, and Puerto Penasco. Although the process is simple, the large amounts of jellyfish required and the need to optimize production costs make jellyfish processing an intense activity that employs hundreds of people during the fishing season, becoming an alternative employment for the people who depend on the fishing industry.
Differences between Judo, Taekwondo and Kung-fu Athletes in Sustained Attention and Impulse Control  [PDF]

Attention processes are essential in athletic performance. Competition in combat sports requires high levels of attention, concentration and self-control. The aim of this study was to determine the differences in attention test performance among three groups of athletes from different disciplines of martial arts (judo, taekwondo and kung-fu). Twenty athletes with at least one year of experience in their respective sport were included in the study. The Test of Variables of Attention (TOVA) was performed, and data for the standard and Z scores of the quarters, halves and totals of each variable were analysed. The kung-fu athletes showed better inhibition response than the judo and taekwondo athletes. Minor performance deterioration during the impulsivity test was identified in kung-fu athletes compared with taekwondo and judo athletes. Judo athletes showed higher variability in reaction times than kung-fu athletes. Our study suggests that kung-fu training improved attention skills more than the other two disciplines. This effect can be explained by the athletes’ dedication to kung-fu training and the sport’s promotion of discipline, self-control and meditation.

Variants of the mixed postman problem solvable using linear programming

Abstract: given a connected mixed graph with costs on its edges and arcs, the mixed postman problem consists of finding a minimum cost closed tour of the mixed graph traversing all of its edges and arcs. it is well-known that this problem is nphard. however, under certain conditions, the problem can be solved in polynomial time using linear programming, in other words, the corresponding polyhedra are integral. some of these conditions are: the mixed graph is series-parallel or the mixed graph is even. also, we show that if we add the constraint that each edge is traversed exactly once then the problem can be solved in polynomial time if the set of arcs forms a forest.

Abstract: Dada una gráfica mixta y conexa con costos en sus aristas y arcos, el problema del cartero mixto consiste en encontrar un circuito cerrado de la gráfica mixta que recorra sus aristas y arcos a costo mínimo. Se sabe que este problema es NP-duro. Sin embargo, bajo ciertas condiciones adicionales, el problema se puede resolver en tiempo polinomial usando programación lineal, en otras palabras, los poliedros correspondientes son enteros. Algunas de estas condiciones son: la gráfica mixta es serie paralelo o la gráfica mixta tiene grado total par en todos sus vértices. Además, mostramos que si agregamos la restricción adicional de que cada arista se recorra exactamente una vez entonces el problema se puede resolver en tiempo polinomial si el conjunto de arcos forma un bosque. Application of a Hybrid 3D-2D Laser Scanning System to the Characterization of Slate Slabs

Abstract: Dimensional control based on 3D laser scanning techniques is widely used in practice. We describe the application of a hybrid 3D-2D laser scanning system to the characterization of slate slabs with structural defects that are difficult for the human eye to characterize objectively. Our study is based on automating the process using a 3D laser scanner and a 2D camera. Our results demonstrate that the application of this hybrid system optimally characterizes slate slabs in terms of the defects described by the Spanish UNE-EN 12326-1 standard.

Abstract: orofacial cutaneous fistulas are often misdiagnosed as dermatological lesions without taking into account their relationship with dental disease. this leads to mistaken and unnecessary treatment for the patient, whose problem remains unresolved, and delays the endodontic therapy which will eliminate the dental infection and subsequent closure and scarring of the extraoral fistula. accordingly, whenever this type of fistula occurs the physician should look for a dental cause and thus make an early diagnosis and refer the patient to his/her dentist so that treatment of the pulp canals can be performed.

Abstract: The Global Reaction Model describes a set of chemical reactions that can potentially occur during the process of obtaining silicon rich oxide (SRO) films, regardless of the technique used to grow such films which are an outside stoichiometry material. Particularly, chemical reactions that occur during the process of growing of SRO films by LPCVD technique are highlighted in this model. We suggest and evaluate either some types of molecules or resulting nanostructures and we predict theoretically, by applying the density functional theory, the contribution that they may have to the phenomenon of luminescence which is measured in SRO films. Also, we have calculated the opto-electronic properties of SRO films. The suggested model provides enough information required to identify the molecular structures resulting from the presence of defects in SRO films and also those corresponding to charged structures. It is also possible to detect the molecular structures which are modified due to the effect of heat treatment, and identify the presence of different oxidation states inclusive the formation of siloxanes.

Abstract: La nueva forma de construir sitios web coloca al usuario en un lugar mucho más protagónico, de manera que puede participar de forma más activa. La Web se entiende ahora como la plataforma sobre la que se desarrollan las aplicaciones y a través de la cual los usuarios interaccionan con ella, porque las necesidades de los usuarios van más allá de la mera consulta de documentos publicados por otros autores, ahora sienten interés en editar ellos mismos sus documentos, bien de forma individual (un blog, por ejemplo) o de forma colectiva (una wiki, por ejemplo). Este nuevo paradigma se conoce con el nombre de web 2.0 e incorpora una serie de ideas y servicios que le otorgan al usuario mayor capacidad de participación, las cuales pueden ser aprovechadas de forma muy interesante por las comunidades educativas, bien de forma personal o bien apoyándose en los recursos que disponen para ello las comunidades autónomas espa olas en la Web, donde desarrollan y mantienen portales que comienzan a integrar productos y servicios 2.0, que ofrecen al usuario mayor participación y personalización de su espacio personal. El objetivo de este estudio es revisar la presencia y uso de estos productos y servicios en este tipo de portales. Los resultados obtenidos nos muestran que se ha iniciado el proceso de adaptación e implementación hacia los portales educativos 2.0 pero que aún queda mucho camino por recorrer. Asimismo, y como era previsible, se han detectado grandes diferencias entre unos portales y otros en cuanto a su grado de desarrollo. Improving Wishart Classification of Polarimetric SAR Data Using the Hopfield Neural Network Optimization Approach

Abstract: This paper proposes the optimization relaxation approach based on the analogue Hopfield Neural Network (HNN) for cluster refinement of pre-classified Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PolSAR) image data. We consider the initial classification provided by the maximum-likelihood classifier based on the complex Wishart distribution, which is then supplied to the HNN optimization approach. The goal is to improve the classification results obtained by the Wishart approach. The classification improvement is verified by computing a cluster separability coefficient and a measure of homogeneity within the clusters. During the HNN optimization process, for each iteration and for each pixel, two consistency coefficients are computed, taking into account two types of relations between the pixel under consideration and its corresponding neighbors. Based on these coefficients and on the information coming from the pixel itself, the pixel under study is re-classified. Different experiments are carried out to verify that the proposed approach outperforms other strategies, achieving the best results in terms of separability and a trade-off with the homogeneity preserving relevant structures in the image. The performance is also measured in terms of computational central processing unit (CPU) times.
