Blind Identification of SIMO Wiener Systems based on Kernel Canonical Correlation Analysis

Abstract: We consider the problem of blind identification and equalization of single-input multiple-output (SIMO) nonlinear channels. Specifically, the nonlinear model consists of multiple single-channel Wiener systems that are excited by a common input signal. The proposed approach is based on a well-known blind identification technique for linear SIMO systems. By transforming the output signals into a reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS), a linear identification problem is obtained, which we propose to solve through an iterative procedure that alternates between canonical correlation analysis (CCA) to estimate the linear parts, and kernel canonical correlation (KCCA) to estimate the memoryless nonlinearities. The proposed algorithm is able to operate on systems with as few as two output channels, on relatively small data sets and on colored signals. Simulations are included to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique.

Abstract: inguinal nodes are the first site of metastatic location of a primary melanoma of the lower extremities. once inguinal metastatic lymph nodes are demonstrated, it is still not clear if the best conduct is to perform a superficial inguinal lymphadenectomy (limited lymphadenectomy) or, on the contrary, a pelvic lymphadenectomy (extended or combined inguinal lymphadenectomy). it is proposed the postsentinel node as anew diagnostic method capable of predicting pelvic node involvement and thus reducing the number of unnecessary pelvic dissections.

Abstract: Los ganglios inguinales son el primer sitio de afectación metastásica del melanoma primario de las extremidades inferiores. Cuando se comprueba metástasis ganglionares inguinales no es claro si solamente se debe realizar linfadenectomía inguinal superficial (linfadenectomía ganglionar limitada) o si por el contrario, se debe efectuar linfadenectomía pélvica (cadena ganglionar ilíaca externa y obturador), además de la linfadenectomía inguinal superficial (linfadenectomía ganglionar extendida o combinada). Se propone al ganglio postcentinela como nuevo método diagnóstico capaz de predecir el compromiso ganglionar pélvico y así reducir el número de vaciamientos pélvicos innecesarios. Abstract: Mario A. Bunge es uno de los filósofos y humanistas más prominentes de nuestra época. Su amplio número de publicaciones ha cubierto muchos campos, entre otros, epistemología, ontología, ética, filosofía de la ciencia natural y social, filosofía de la tecnología, y filosofía de la mente. Un tópico que intercepta muchas de estas áreas y que es recurrente en el trabajo de Bunge es la causalidad. Su análisis de causación, causa principal, y la redefinición de determinismo ha sido aplicado a diferentes temas filosóficos que van desde el papel causal del funcionamiento neuronal hasta el fenómeno de las leyes sociales. Blind Analysis of EGM Signals: Sparsity-Aware Formulation

Abstract: This technical note considers the problems of blind sparse learning and inference of electrogram (EGM) signals under atrial fibrillation (AF) conditions. First of all we introduce a mathematical model for the observed signals that takes into account the multiple foci typically appearing inside the heart during AF. Then we propose a reconstruction model based on a fixed dictionary and discuss several alternatives for choosing the dictionary. In order to obtain a sparse solution that takes into account the biological restrictions of the problem, a first alternative is using LASSO regularization followed by a post-processing stage that removes low amplitude coefficients violating the refractory period characteristic of cardiac cells. As an alternative we propose a novel regularization term, called cross products LASSO (CP-LASSO), that is able to incorporate the biological constraints directly into the optimization problem. Unfortunately, the resulting problem is non-convex, but we show how it can be solved efficiently in an approximated way making use of successive convex approximations (SCA). Finally, spectral analysis is performed on the clean activation sequence obtained from the sparse learning stage in order to estimate the number of latent foci and their frequencies. Simulations on synthetic and real data are provided to validate the proposed approach.
The Recognition of the Asymmetry: Sticky Costs and Cognitive Biases  [PDF]

Abstract:
This paper investigates whether individuals are accurate in recognizing and predicting cost stickiness under different presentation formats. In particular, I conduct an experiment manipulating the degree of cost asymmetry (nonsticky, semisticky, sticky), which is the cost behavior when revenues increase or decrease, and the presentation of financial information (monetary amounts vs. percentages). Contrary to the expectation, participants are more likely to recognize and predict accurately sticky costs rather than nonsticky costs (i.e. cost symmetry). They mentally apply a sticky model also to predict changes of nonsticky costs. Moreover, the presentation of variations expressed as percentages allows more accurate forecasts. Further, a significant interaction effect between the two manipulations is found. The cognitive ability and the cognitive style of the participants are measured in order to disentangle possible confounding effects. The findings of this study suggest that the mental models of the individuals and their cognitive biases influence cost forecasts and adjustments decisions.

Abstract: The relativistic precession of Mercury -43.1 seconds of arc per century, is the result of a secular addition of 5.02×10-7 rad. at the end of every orbit around the Sun. The question that arises in this paper, is to analyse the angular precession at each single point of the elliptic orbit and determine its magnitude and oscillation around the mean value, comparing key theoretical proposals. Underline also that, this astronomical determination has not been yet achieved, so it is considered that Messenger spacecraft, now orbiting the planet or the future mission BepiColombo, should provide an opportunity to perform it. That event will clarify some significant issues, now that we are close to reach the centenary of the formulation and first success of General Relativity.

Abstract:

This article checks a perturbing gravitational potential, with some orbit dynamics parameters: the angular precession at each single point of any elliptic orbit, the increase of the eccentricity of the Moon and the secular increase of the Astronomical Unit. This potential is consistent with the solution of the precession of Mercury, event which was the first success of General Relativity, and now is near to reach its first centenary. We suggest in this paper to update the classic test of G.R., studying the gradual progression of precession, not only in its perihelion but testing a complete trajectory around the Sun.
