Abstract: The article describes a negative impact of pollution on the environment considering the reaction of live organism bioindicators to the level of pollution., Due to the sensitiveness to gas waste, Lichen (Lichenes) and fungus (Rhytisma acerinum) are very important for estimating air pollution. Therefore, the paper analyzes air pollution on the basis of testing lichens and fungus and compares the situation of SO2 in the air in Vilnius districts Karolini k s, e kin and Justini k s with the suburban area of Avi ieniai. Article in Lithuanian Neigiam tak aplinkai tikslinga spr sti pagal gyv organizm bioindikatori reakcij ter alus. Functional Data Analysis in Electronic Commerce Research

Mathematics , 2006, DOI: 10.1214/088342306000000132
Abstract: This paper describes opportunities and challenges of using functional data analysis (FDA) for the exploration and analysis of data originating from electronic commerce (eCommerce). We discuss the special data structures that arise in the online environment and why FDA is a natural approach for representing and analyzing such data. The paper reviews several FDA methods and motivates their usefulness in eCommerce research by providing a glimpse into new domain insights that they allow. We argue that the wedding of eCommerce with FDA leads to innovations both in statistical methodology, due to the challenges and complications that arise in eCommerce data, and in online research, by being able to ask (and subsequently answer) new research questions that classical statistical methods are not able to address, and also by expanding on research questions beyond the ones traditionally asked in the offline environment. We describe several applications originating from online transactions which are new to the statistics literature, and point out statistical challenges accompanied by some solutions. We also discuss some promising future directions for joint research efforts between researchers in eCommerce and statistics.
A Special Issue on Statistical Challenges and Opportunities in Electronic Commerce Research
Wolfgang Jank,Galit Shmueli
Mathematics , 2006, DOI: 10.1214/088342306000000178
Abstract: This special issue is a product of the First Interdisciplinary Symposium on Statistical Challenges and Opportunities in Electronic Commerce Research, which took place on May 22--23, 2005, at the Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland, College Park (\url{www.smith.umd.edu/dit/statschallenges/}). The symposium brought together, for the first time, researchers from statistics, information systems, and related fields, all of whom work or are interested in empirical research related to electronic commerce. The goal of the symposium was to cross the borders, discuss joint research opportunities, expose this field and its statistical challenges, and promote collaboration between the different fields.
E-loyalty networks in online auctions
Wolfgang Jank,Inbal Yahav
Statistics , 2010, DOI: 10.1214/09-AOAS310
Abstract: Creating a loyal customer base is one of the most important, and at the same time, most difficult tasks a company faces. Creating loyalty online (e-loyalty) is especially difficult since customers can ``switch'' to a competitor with the click of a mouse. In this paper we investigate e-loyalty in online auctions. Using a unique data set of over 30,000 auctions from one of the main consumer-to-consumer online auction houses, we propose a novel measure of e-loyalty via the associated network of transactions between bidders and sellers. Using a bipartite network of bidder and seller nodes, two nodes are linked when a bidder purchases from a seller and the number of repeat-purchases determines the strength of that link. We employ ideas from functional principal component analysis to derive, from this network, the loyalty distribution which measures the perceived loyalty of every individual seller, and associated loyalty scores which summarize this distribution in a parsimonious way. We then investigate the effect of loyalty on the outcome of an auction. In doing so, we are confronted with several statistical challenges in that standard statistical models lead to a misrepresentation of the data and a violation of the model assumptions. The reason is that loyalty networks result in an extreme clustering of the data, with few high-volume sellers accounting for most of the individual transactions. We investigate several remedies to the clustering problem and conclude that loyalty networks consist of very distinct segments that can best be understood individually.
Sturm und Drang na música para teclado de Wilhelm Friedemann Bach: evidências reveladas na Polonaise No.4 em Ré menor
Rosa, Stella Almeida;Jank, Helena;
Per Musi , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-75992011000200014
Abstract: this paper intends to point out contextual and musical elements, especially those relative to expressiveness, that brings wilhelm friedemann bach's keyboard works close to german sturm und drang, that happened during the beginning of the second half of the eighteenth century, through the identification of the literary and musical procedures and the analysis of the polonaise number 4, in d minor, as a representative work of this style.
Problems of Directional Drilling in OKD, DPB, a.s.
Jankù Miroslav,Kunz Antonín
Acta Montanistica Slovaca , 2004,
Abstract: Application of directional drilling in underground coal mines is well known from Australia or USA, this method is used especially for gas drainage and coal seam exploration. The paper deals with trajectory control of boreholes drilled in underground of Ostrava-Karvina coal mines. Utilisation of indirect control technologies for gas drainage and technical purposes including examples are described below. Results of the first two experiments with downhole motor, direct control technology and horizontal directional drilling are mentioned in the end of the article as well as some recommendation and possible ways of future development.

Abstract: with the goal on identifying the relationship between the standardization on the beef buying and selling by supermarkets, the coordination of suppliers and the size of the firm, a survey on supermarket firms in the state of s?o paulo and in the metropolitan area of belo horizonte was developed. a structured questionnaire was elaborated with the additional purpose of revealing the knowledge level of new retail technologies and the supermarket purchase behaviour of beef. using contingency tables analysis, three focus variables were related and it was investigated the statistical dependence relationship between them. the results lead to the conclusion that there is a strong statistical dependence relationship between the coordination of suppliers and the size of the firm, and between coordination and standardization on the beef buying and selling process, but not between the standardization and the size of the firm. moreover, there was demonstrated the knowledge of the most common practices and the best practices of standardization on the beef buying and selling process, and of the most common practices and the best practices of coordination of suppliers. finally, the results lead to the conclusion that the implementation of managerial tools like supply chain management is difficult to be performed on the short run, essentially because of the low diffusion of the standardization practices between all supermarket size categories and the difficulties imposed by the low knowledge of new retail managerial tools and technologies.

Crop Breeding and Applied Biotechnology , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1984-70332011000500005
Abstract: brazil has the largest commercial beef cattle herd and is the main beef exporter in the world. cultivated pastures are the basis for the brazilian beef production, and occupy an area of 101.4 million hectares. however, very few forage cultivars are commercially available, and the majority of these are of apomictic reproduction, thus genetically homogeneous. tropical forage breeding is at its infancy, but much investment and efforts have been applied in the last three decades and some new cultivars have been released. in this paper, origin of different species, modes of reproduction, breeding programs and targets are discussed and the resulting new cultivars released are presented.
