Sets of constant distance from a Jordan curve

Abstract: We study the $\epsilon$-level sets of the signed distance function to a planar Jordan curve $\Gamma$, and ask what properties of $\Gamma$ ensure that the $\epsilon$-level sets are Jordan curves, or uniform quasicircles, or uniform chord-arc curves for all sufficiently small $\epsilon$. Sufficient conditions are given in term of a scaled invariant parameter for measuring the local deviation of subarcs from their chords. The chordal conditions given are sharp.
Quasisymmetric spheres over Jordan domains

Abstract: Let $\Omega$ be a planar Jordan domain. We consider double-dome-like surfaces $\Sigma$ defined by graphs of functions of $dist( \cdot ,\partial \Omega)$ over $\Omega$. The goal is to find the right conditions on the geometry of the base $\Omega$ and the growth of the height so that $\Sigma$ is a quasisphere, or quasisymmetric to $\mathbb{S}^2$. An internal uniform chord-arc condition on the constant distance sets to $\partial \Omega$, coupled with a mild growth condition on the height, gives a close-to-sharp answer. Our method also produces new examples of quasispheres in $\mathbb{R}^n$, for any $n\ge 3$.
Geometry and quasisymmetric parametrization of Semmes spaces

Abstract: We consider decomposition spaces $\R^3/G$ that are manifold factors and admit defining sequences consisting of cubes-with-handles. Metrics on $\R^3/G$ constructed via modular embeddings into Euclidean spaces promote the controlled topology to a controlled geometry. The quasisymmetric parametrizability of the metric space $\R^3/G\times \R^m$ imposes quantitative topological constraints, in terms of the circulation and growth, to the defining sequences for $\R^3/G$. We give a necessary condition and a sufficient condition for the existence of parametrization. The necessary condition answers a question of Heinonen and Semmes on quasisymmetric parametrizability of spaces associated to the Bing double. The sufficient condition gives new examples of quasispheres in $\bS^4$.

Abstract: We construct quasiconformal mappings in Euclidean spaces by integration of a discontinuous kernel against doubling measures with suitable decay. The differentials of mappings that arise in this way satisfy an isotropic form of the doubling condition. We prove that this isotropic doubling condition is satisfied by the distance functions of certain fractal sets. Finally, we construct an isotropic doubling measure that is not absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure.

Abstract: Biosynthesis of peanut stilbenes, including resveratrol as the secondary metabolites, could be enhanced by subjecting the kernels to germination and wound-stress. Investigations of the bio-elicited peanut sprout powder (BPSP) addressed on characterization of the comprising stilbenes and effectiveness in longevity extension deserves intensive research. In this study, peanut kernels were subjected to germination and wound-stress in preparation of BPSP. The methanol extracts of BPSP were medium pressure liquid chromatographic (MPLC) fractionated and semi-preparative HPLC recovered and followed by instrumental identification and biological activity determinations of the isolated stilbenes. In longevity experiments, 16 female 11-mon-old BALB/c mice and both genders of 12-mon-old ICR mice were daily fed with BPSP supplemented diets at doses of 0, 0.1 and 0.5 g BPSP/kg bw for 750 and 762 days, respectively. Based on chemical characterization, enriched quantity of stilbenes in the BPSP up to ca. 1% (w/w) was detected. Two new stilbene compounds, namely, 4, 5’-dihydroxy-6’’-hydroxymethyl, 6’’-methylpyrano [2’’, 3’’: 3’, 4’] stilbene and 3, 4, 5’-trihydroxy-6’’, 6’’-dimethylpyrano [2’’, 3’’: 3’, 4’]stilbene along with 5 known stilbenes were isolated. The 7 stilbenes exhibited potent antioxidative and antiglycative activities and varied with structure-activity nature. Based on the resultant survival curves and average lifespans of both mouse models, basal diets supplemented with BPSP are effective to extend mouse longevity by a dose dependent manner.

Abstract: Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), long-range PCR, and direct sequencing were used to map the breakpoints on chromosomes 1p and 12q. A reporter gene assay was conducted in human neuroblastoma (SKNSH) and Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell lines to assess the functional implication of the fusion sequences between chromosomes 12 and 1.We determined both breakpoints at the nucleotide level. Neither breakpoint disrupted any known gene directly. The breakpoint on chromosome 1p was located amid a gene-poor region of ~ 1.1 Mb, while the breakpoint on chromosome 12q was located ~ 3.4 kb downstream of the ALX1 gene, a homeobox gene. In the reporter gene assay, we discovered that the fusion sequences construct between chromosomes 12 and 1 had a ~ 1.5 to 2-fold increased reporter gene activity compared with the corresponding normal chromosome 12 sequences construct.Our findings imply that the translocation may enhance the expression of the ALX1 gene via the position effect and result in the clinical symptoms of this family. Our findings may also expand the clinical phenotype spectrum of ALX1-related human diseases as loss of the ALX1 function was recently reported to result in abnormal craniofacial development.Mental retardation (MR) is a childhood-onset neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by a reduced intellectual function that results in learning disability and impaired social adaptation. Areca Users in Combination with Tobacco and Alcohol Use Are Associated with Younger Age of Diagnosed Esophageal Cancer in Taiwanese Men

Abstract: Background Whether the habitual use of substances (tobacco, alcohol, or areca nut (seed of the Areca palm)) can affect the age of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) presentation has rarely been examined. Methods The study subjects were those who were males and the first time to be diagnosed as ESCC (ICD-9 150) and who visited any of three medical centers in Taiwan between 2000 and 2009. A standardized questionnaire was used to collect substance uses and other variables. Results Mean age (±SD) at presentation of ESCC was 59.2 (±11.3) years in a total of 668 cases. After adjusting for other covariates, alcohol drinkers were 3.58 years younger to have ESCC than non-drinkers (p = 0.002). A similar result was found among areca chewers, who were 6.34 years younger to have ESCC than non-chewers (p<0.0001), but not among cigarette smokers (p = 0.10). When compared to the group using 0–1 substances, subjects using both cigarettes and alcohol were nearly 3 years younger to contract ESCC. Furthermore, those who use areca plus another substance were 7–8 years younger. Subjects using all three substances had the greatest age difference, 9.20 years younger (p<0.0001), compared to the comparison group. Conclusion Our findings suggest that habitually consuming tobacco, alcohol, and areca nut can influence the age-onset of ESCC. Since the development of ESCC is insidious and life-threatening, our observation is worthy to be reconfirmed in the large-scale and long-term follow-up prospective cohort studies to recommend the screening strategy of this disease.

Abstract: Standards and specifications are the premise of integrated reorganization of science specimen data, and data integration is the core of the reorganization. ETL [1] which is the abbreviation of extract, transform, and load [2], is very suitable for data integration. Kettle is a kind of ETL software. In this paper, it has been introduced into the integrated reorganization of science specimen data. Multi-source and heterogeneous specimen data are integrated using kettle, and good results have been achieved. It proved the effectiveness of kettle in the integrated reorganization of science specimen data. The application has practical significance, and the method can be referenced when reorganizing other resource data.
