Abstract: the study of the ethereal extract from fruits of bromelia pinguin l. ("pi?a de ratón") was conducted by the cg-em coupled system. the following acids were detected: 2-pentanedioic, octanedioic, phthalic, citric, nonanodioic, 12-methyltetradecanoic, palmitic, oleic, linoleic, stearic, 11,14,17-eicosatrie-noic and 11,14-eicosadienoic. their identification was based on the times of retention and it was confirmed by comparing the spectra of masses with those of patterns. the presence of these compounds in the fruits of b. pinguin l. is reported for the first time.

Abstract: mangiferin was selected as marker in the quality control of active principle vimang? and its formulations, which have been used as nutritional supplement, cosmetic, and phytomedication. this paper was aimed at validating the capillary electrophoresis method for the quantitative analysis of mangiferin in the pharmaceutical formulation 300 mg vimang? tablets. the specificity, linearity, accuracy and precision were assessed. the results showed the method specificity owing to lack of interference by the excipients or their degradation products. linearity showed a correlation coefficient of 0.9979 in the studied concentration range. the variation coefficients for repeatability and intermediate precision were less than 2 %. accuracy reached a recovery rate of 100.20 % that is not statistically different from 100 %. it may be concluded that the validated method is specific, linear, precise and accurate and could be an advantageous alternative to the high resolution liquid chromatography method used at the lab setting.

Abstract: Se realizó el estudio del extracto etéreo de frutos de Bromelia pinguin L. (pi a de ratón) mediante el sistema acoplado CG-EM. Se detectó la presencia de los ácidos 2-pentenodioico, octanodioico, ftálico, cítrico, nonanodioico, 12-metiltetradecanoico, palmítico, oleico, linolénico, esteárico, 11,14,17-eicosatrienoico y 11,14-eicosadienoico. La identificación fue realizada sobre la base de los tiempos de retención y fue confirmada por comparación de los espectros de masas con los de patrones. Por primera vez es informada la presencia de estos compuestos en los frutos de B. pinguin L. The study of the ethereal extract from fruits of Bromelia pinguin L. Abstract: La mangiferina se seleccionó como marcador en el control de calidad del ingrediente farmacéutico activo VIMANG y sus formulaciones, que se han empleado como suplemento nutricional, cosmético y fitomedicamento. El trabajo tuvo como objetivo la validación del método electroforesis capilar para la determinación cuantitativa de mangiferina en la formulación farmacéutica tabletas VIMANG 300 mg. Se evaluaron la especificidad, linealidad, exactitud y precisión. Los resultados obtenidos demostraron que el método fue específico, al no existir interferencias de los excipientes o sus productos de degradación. La linealidad mostró un coeficiente de correlación de 0,9979 en el intervalo de concentraciones estudiado. Los coeficientes de variación para la repetibilidad y la precisión intermedia fueron menores de 2 %. La exactitud mostró un recobrado del 100,20 % que no difiere significativamente de 100 %. En conclusión, el método validado es específico, lineal, preciso y exacto, y constituye una alternativa ventajosa al método cromatografía líquida de alta resolución establecido con anterioridad en el laboratorio. Treatment of bronchial asthma with an aqueous extract of Mangifera indica L. (VIMANG ): two cases report

Abstract: Un reporte de caso fue realizado en dos pacientes asmáticos tratados con un nuevo producto natural de salud llamado Vimang , un extracto acuoso de la corteza de Mangifera indica L. que ha sido registrado como antioxidante y antiinflamatorio. Una mujer de 39 a os con asma moderada persistente y un hombre de 43 a os con asma severa persistente fueron tratados por vía oral con Vimang (cápsulas 300 mg, una cada ocho horas durante tres meses). En las semanas 0, 6 y 12 se realizaron pruebas funcionales respiratorias y determinaciones de inmunoglobulina E total en suero (IgE), proteína catiónica de eosinófilo (ECP) y la actividad de metaloproteinasa-9 (MMP-9). En ambos pacientes se observó una mejoría en el volumen de espiración forzada (FEV1). Los valores de IgE, ECP y la actividad de MMP-9 decrecieron en ambos pacientes. Estos resultados podrían sentar las bases para la realización de más investigaciones clínicas acerca del uso del Vimang como una alternativa para el tratamiento del asma bronquial.

Abstract: a survey of the dung beetle (scarabaeinae) fauna of four types of dry habitats is shown; the collect method was transects of pitfall fatten with human excrement, a total of 26 species and 12 genera were found (beta diversity). the highest diversity (alpha diversity) is present in the dry forest with the lower impact of human activity (18 species) while the lowest diversity (7 species) is found in the patches of dry forest located in urban zones. the species number is higher than the registered to other dry forest of the country, and an elevated species turnover compared with other studies was detected.
A randomized controlled trial of vitamin D dosing strategies after acute hip fracture: No advantage of loading doses over daily supplementation

Abstract: In this randomized controlled study, patients over age 50 with an acute fragility hip fracture were enrolled from two hospital sites in Ontario, Canada. Participants were randomized to one of three loading dose groups: placebo; 50,000 IU vitamin D2; or 100,000 IU D2. Following a placebo/loading dose, all patients received a daily tablet of 1,000 IU vitamin D3 for 90 days. Serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25-OHD) was measured at baseline, discharge from acute care (approximately 4-weeks), and 3-months.Sixty-five patients were enrolled in the study (44% male). An immediate rise in 25-OHD occurred in the 100,000 group, however there were no significant differences in 25-OHD between the placebo, 50,000 and 100,000 loading dose groups after 4-weeks (69.3, 84.5, 75.6 nmol/L, p = 0.15) and 3-months (86.7, 84.2, 73.3 nmol/L, p = 0.09), respectively. At the end of the study, approximately 75% of the placebo and 50,000 groups had reached the target therapeutic range (75 nmol/L), and 44% of the 100,000 group.In correcting vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency in elderly patients with hip fracture, our findings suggest that starting with a lower daily dose of Vitamin D3 achieved similar results as providing an additional large loading dose of Vitamin D2. At the end of the study, all three groups were equally effective in attaining improvement in 25-OHD levels. Given that a daily dose of 1,000 IU vitamin D3 (with or without a loading dose) resulted in at least 25% of patients having suboptimal vitamin D status, patients with acute hip fracture may benefit from a higher daily dose of vitamin D.Clinical Trials # NCT00424619Vitamin D deficiency is a major risk factor for accelerated bone loss and fracture [1]. Abstract:

The luminescence characteristics of feldspar from Nigeria were investigated. Without preheat treatment, the TL glow curve exhibited two peaks at 136°C and 175°C. When preheated to a temperature of 200°C only one peak was observed at 240°C. The highest net IRSL intensity was obtained for a stimulation temperature of 250°C. The TL signal is reduced by IR stimulation, and the longer the stimulation the more pronounced the effect. The dose response curves for both the TL and the IRSL showed a linear relationship for the doses considered in the study. Dose recovery test performed using the SAR method showed consistency with given dose for both TL and IRSL.

Efecto protector de los polifenoles de Rhizophora mangle L. sobre el da?o oxidativo a proteínas y ADN

Abstract: introduction: the aqueous extract from rhizophora mangle (l.) bark has demonstrated a broad spectrum of medicinal uses; for example, in treating bovine mastitis, wound healing, uterine infections and gastroduodenal ulcers, due to its antiseptic, healing, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. however, the antioxidant activity in its whole complexity has not been fully studied in order to elucidate the mechanisms of action involved in this pharmacological effect. objective: to determine if r. mangle bark aqueous extract and its polyphenolic fraction protect the main biomolecules from oxidative damage. methods: the antioxidant activity of r. mangle extract and its polyphenolic fraction on the main biomolecules was determined by the following methods: oxidative damage trial on bovine serum albumin exposed to hydroxyl radicals generated in the fenton system and the bleomycin-fe3+ system-induced dna oxidative degradation trial. results: the r. mangle bark extract and its polyphenolic fraction, at the highest tested concentration, reduced the sulfhydryl group oxidation by 87,3 % and 89,1 % and they also inhibited the dna degradation by 98.4 % and 91.9 % respectively. the regression analysis demonstrated that both effects depended on tannin concentration in the extract and its fraction. the comparison of regression lines revealed that the extract and its fraction were equally effective in protecting bovine serum albumin from oxidation by hydroxyl radicals; however, the extract was more effective when protecting dna from oxidative degradation than its fraction. conclusions: the r. mangle aqueous extract showed a protective effect on the main biomolecules from the oxidative damage, evidenced by inhibiting loss of sulfhydryl group in bovine serum albumin and decreasing the dna degradation. at the same time, it was shown that polyphenolic compounds present in the extract were the main responsible for the antioxidant effects observed in this study.
Estudio toxicogenético de un extracto fluido de ocimun basilicum l. (albahaca blanca)

Abstract: the results obtained on evaluating the toxicogenetic potential of a fluid extract with an ethanol menstruum 70 % of ocimun basilicum l. in 3 systems of short-term tests are presented. 2 in vitro models were used: the salmonella/microsome system (ames) and that of mitotic segregation with the aspergillus nidulans d-30 fungus. another in vivo model that uses the micronucleus induction test in mouse bone marrow was also included. a positive response was observed in the ames±test with the strains of salmonella typhimurium ta-98 with metabolic activation in the range of concentrations of 1 500 and 5 000 m g/plate and ta-1535 without metabolic activation in the range of concentrations of 50, 150, 500 and 1 500 m g/plate. concentrations from 0,005 to 1,00 mg of total solids/ml were evaluated in the mitotic segregation test. no significant concentration-depending increases were found in the frequency of segregating sectors by colonies (fsc). in the micronucleus induction test, doses of 500, 1 000 and 2 000 mg/kg of body weight were assayed. the results showed that the extract of ocimun basilicum l. proved to be mutagenic in the salmonella/microsome system and moderately cytotoxic in the mitototic segregation test. no genetic damage was detected in this assay.
