Quantum Structures and Category Theory
Roman Fric
Advances in Electrical and Electronic Engineering , 2004,
Abstract: The methods and constructions of category theory are suitable tools for studying quantum structures and generalized probability. The aim of the present paper is to support our claim via several examples and to motivate further research in this area.

Colorectal cancer screening in Europe

World Journal of Gastroenterology , 2009,
Abstract: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most frequent malignant disease in Europe. Every year, 412 000 people are diagnosed with this condition, and 207 000 patients die of it. In 2003, recommendations for screening programs were issued by the Council of the European Union (EU), and these currently serve as the basis for the preparation of European guidelines for CRC screening. The manner in which CRC screening is carried out varies significantly from country to country within the EU, both in terms of organization and the screening test chosen. A screening program of one sort or another has been implemented in 19 of 27 EU countries. The most frequently applied method is testing stool for occult bleeding (fecal occult blood test, FOBT). In recent years, a screening colonoscopy has been introduced, either as the only method (Poland) or the method of choice (Germany, Czech Republic).
A completion functor for Cauchy groups
R. Fric,D. C. Kent
International Journal of Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences , 1981, DOI: 10.1155/s0161171281000033
Abstract: A completion functor is constructed on the category of completely normal Cauchy groups and Cauchy-continuous homomorphisms. A competion functor is also obtained for a corresponding category of convergence groups.
Completion functors for Cauchy spaces
R. Fric,D. C. Kent
International Journal of Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences , 1979, DOI: 10.1155/s0161171279000442
Abstract: Completion functors are constructed on various categories of Cauchy spaces by forming the composition of Wyler's completion functor with suitable modification functors.
Der Einfluss von Psychopharmaka auf selbstsch digende Tendenzen bei emotional instabiler Pers nlichkeitsst rung
Steinmann, Carsten,Artmann, Sissi,Fric, Mirijam,Laux, Gerd
Psychiatrische Forschung , 2010, DOI: 10.5283/pf.25
Chikungunya Virus Neutralization Antigens and Direct Cell-to-Cell Transmission Are Revealed by Human Antibody-Escape Mutants

Abstract: Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is an alphavirus responsible for numerous epidemics throughout Africa and Asia, causing infectious arthritis and reportedly linked with fatal infections in newborns and elderly. Previous studies in animal models indicate that humoral immunity can protect against CHIKV infection, but despite the potential efficacy of B-cell-driven intervention strategies, there are no virus-specific vaccines or therapies currently available. In addition, CHIKV has been reported to elicit long-lasting virus-specific IgM in humans, and to establish long-term persistence in non-human primates, suggesting that the virus might evade immune defenses to establish chronic infections in man. However, the mechanisms of immune evasion potentially employed by CHIKV remain uncharacterized. We previously described two human monoclonal antibodies that potently neutralize CHIKV infection. In the current report, we have characterized CHIKV mutants that escape antibody-dependent neutralization to identify the CHIKV E2 domain B and fusion loop “groove” as the primary determinants of CHIKV interaction with these antibodies. Furthermore, for the first time, we have also demonstrated direct CHIKV cell-to-cell transmission, as a mechanism that involves the E2 domain A and that is associated with viral resistance to antibody-dependent neutralization. Identification of CHIKV sub-domains that are associated with human protective immunity, will pave the way for the development of CHIKV-specific sub-domain vaccination strategies. Moreover, the clear demonstration of CHIKV cell-to-cell transmission and its possible role in the establishment of CHIKV persistence, will also inform the development of future anti-viral interventions. These data shed new light on CHIKV-host interactions that will help to combat human CHIKV infection and inform future studies of CHIKV pathogenesis.

环境科学 , 1997,
Abstract: It is proven that Inorganic Membrane Bio-Reactor(IMBR)applied to domestic wastewater treatment is technically feasible and reliable during several months. In this study, under conditions of membrane flux between 75 and 150L/(m2·h),hydraulic retention time 5 hours, sludge retention time 5, 15, 30 days and velocity inside the membrane channel 4 m/s, the stable sludge concentrations(MLSS)in the bioreactor reach 3.1, 10.7and 17.3g/L after 10, 16 and 14 days respectively. Average removal rate of COD,NH3-N, and turbidity of the system are higher than 96%,95%and 98%,SS and E.coli.,100%. The effluent quality is always better than the quality standard for reuse issued by the Ministry of Construction in China. Moreover, fouling mechanisms of IMBR are also discussed in this paper. The initial permeability of inorganic membrane can be easily recovered over 90% after physical and chemical cleaning operations.
A Longitudinal Analysis of the Stability of Household Money Demand  [PDF]
Jan Tin
Modern Economy (ME) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/me.2011.23046
Abstract: Past aggregate time-series studies, conducted under the assumption of a representative economic agent, frequently show that the demand for narrowly defined M1, especially non-interest-yielding demand deposit, is unstable during periods of financial innovations. Whether this is longitudinally the case among life-cycle savers is unclear. This study utilizes longitudinal data to take another look and find that volatility in the demand for non-interest-earning checking accounts in the mid and late 1990s is attributable solely to the portion held for the transactions motive. When the conventional Baumol-Tobin model is extended to include human capital and family formation variables representing the life-cycle motive, equilibrium money demand is a stable function of both economic and demographic variables.
