Revista do Colégio Brasileiro de Cirurgi?es , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-69912006000400010
Abstract: background: although the radiographic characteristics of acute appendicitis have been well documented, the value of plain abdominal radiograph has not been completely studied. therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to verify a new radiographic sign: the presence of fecal loading in the cecum. methods: one hundred seventy consecutive patients of both sexes have been studied prospectively. they were admitted to the hospital due to acute abdominal pain localized in the right flank. the patients were divided in two groups: group 1 (n = 100) - diagnosed clinically as acute appendicitis and submitted to an abdominal radiographic study a few hours before surgical treatment. group 2 - (n = 70) -patients submitted to two abdominal radiographic studies, one before the surgical procedure and the other the following day. all of the radiographs were plain with an anteroposterior view of the abdomen. results: the sign of fecal loading in the cecum was present in 97 (97%) patients of group 1 and in 68 (97.14 %) patients of group 2. during the postoperative period the radiographic sign disappeared in 66 of the 68 cases that had this sign. the sensitivity of the radiographic sign for acute appendicitis was 97.05%. conclusion: the radiographic image of fecal loading in the cecum is associated with acute appendicitis. this sign usually disappears after the withdrawn of the appendix.

Einstein (S?o Paulo) , 2007,
Abstract: Objective: The purpose of this investigation was to verify theimportance of the radiographic sign of fecal loading in the cecum forthe differential diagnosis of acute appendicitis. Methods: A total of470 consecutive patients of both sexes was admitted to hospital dueto acute abdomen and pain in the right flank and prospectively studied.The patients were divided as follows: Group 1 (n = 170) – diagnosedwith acute appendicitis and subdivided into two subgroups: Subgroup1A – (n = 100) – patients submitted to an abdominal radiographicstudy a few hours before surgical treatment, Subgroup 1B – (n = 70)– patients submitted to two radiographic studies of the abdomen, onebefore the surgical procedure and the other on the next day; Group 2(n = 100) – patients of both sexes with right nephrolithiasis submittedto an abdominal radiography during the episode of pain caused by thecalculus; Group 3 (n = 100) – women diagnosed with right acuteinflammatory pelvic disease that underwent an abdominal radiographicstudy during the pain crisis; Group 4 (n = 100) – patients of both sexeswho underwent surgery due to acute cholecystitis and were submittedto abdominal radiography during the pain episode that preceded thesurgical procedure. Results: The sign of fecal loading in the cecumwas present in 97 patients of Subgroup 1A, in 68 patients of Subgroup1B, in 19 patients of Group 2, in 12 patients of Group 3 and in 13patients of Group 4. During the postoperative period the radiographicsign disappeared in 66 of the 68 cases who presented the sign. Thesensitivity of the radiographic sign for acute appendicitis was 97.05%and specificity was 85.33%. The positive predictive value for acuteappendicitis was 78.94% and its negative predictive value was 98.08%.Conclusion: The radiographic image of fecal loading in the cecum isassociated with acute appendicitis. The image usually disappears soonafter the appendix is removed. This sign is uncommon in other acuteinflammatory diseases of the right side of the abdomen.
Associa??o entre alergia prévia, infertilidade e abortamento
Zac, Renata Indelicato;Machado, Valeska Marques de Menezes;Alberti, Luiz Ronaldo;Petroianu, Andy;
Revista da Associa??o Médica Brasileira , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-42302005000300020
Abstract: background: to verify the relation between allergy and abortion or infertility. methods: a retrospective study was carried out by interviewing 250 women between 40 and 60 years of age, divided into two groups: group 1 (n = 162): allergic women and group 2 (n = 148): women with no record of allergy. patients were randomly assessed at the gynecology and obstetric day care units of the "hospital das clínicas - ufmg". women in both groups were identified according to their age and skin color. previous abortion episodes and difficulty to become pregnant were recorded. doubts related to these replies excluded the woman from this study. results were compared using the chi-square test. differences were considered significant for values corresponding to p < 0.05. results: a higher incidence of difficulty to become pregnant was observed among the allergic patients in comparison to those non-allergic. in both groups, abortion and infertility were more frequent in mulatto, followed by caucasians and black women. in 44.4% of the patients of group 1 the allergic manifestations worsened. conclusions: the presence of allergy seems to be related to a higher rate of infertility.

Petroianu, Andy;Alberti, Luiz Ronaldo;Zac, Renata Indelicato;Andrade Junior, Joáo Carlos Cisneiros Guedes de;
Revista do Colégio Brasileiro de Cirurgi?es , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-69912004000300009
Abstract: background: surgical trauma can provoke systemic alterations including changes in hepatic protein synthesis. thus, it is important to point out the influence of this phenomenon on serum albumin concentration. to assess the effect of surgical trauma on serum albumin concentration during the immediate postoperative period. methods: the study was conducted on 200 randomly chosen adult patients submitted to elective major surgeries (group 1) and to medium size surgeries (group 2), identified according to sex, age and skin color. blood samples for the determination of serum albumin concentration were obtained on the day preceding and following the surgical procedure. results: there was a reduction in serum albumin both in group 1 (p<0.0001) and group 2 (p<0.0001), with no difference between sexes or patient skin colors for major surgeries. however, women showed a lower reduction in serum albumin than men in medium-sized surgeries. also, the reduction of albumin was lower in black-skinned patients than in colored and lower in the latter than in white-skinned patients. with respect to age range, a greater reduction of albumin was observed in both groups among patients older than 65 years, followed by younger patients (<45 years) and finally by patients aged 45 to 65 years. conclusion: medium-sized and major operations provoked an acute reduction in albuminemia, which was more intense among men, the aged and the white-skinned patients.
The Use of Plants and Wildflowers as Bioremediation for Contaminated Soils in the Hong Kong S.A.R.  [PDF]
Angelo Indelicato
Open Journal of Soil Science (OJSS) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ojss.2014.49032
Abstract: Heavy metal contamination of the biosphere has increased sharply over the last century. Anthropogenic activities such as industrialisation and demographic growth can be considered as the main causes of it. Soil contamination affects every organism and poses major environmental and human health problems worldwide. The issue has been addressed in the past and a few methodologies have been developed in order to effectively clean up the contaminated areas. However, many of these remedies are very aggressive and can damage the soil. This paper focuses on the use of gentler techniques, which take advantage of the properties of several plants and wildflowers that absorb heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and their potential application in megacities such as Hong Kong.

An algorithm for the arithmetic classification of multilattices
Giuliana Indelicato
Physics , 2009,
Abstract: A procedure for the construction and the classification of multilattices in arbitrary dimension is proposed. The algorithm allows to determine explicitly the location of the points of a multilattice given its space group, and to determine whether two multilattices are arithmetically equivalent. The algorithm is based on ideas from integer matrix theory, in particular the reduction to the Smith normal form. Among the applications of this procedure is a software package that allows the classification of complex crystalline structures and the determination of their space groups. Also, it can be used to determine the symmetry of regular systems of points in high dimension, with applications to the study of quasicrystals and sets of points with noncrystallographic symmetry in low dimension, such as viral capsid structures.
