The Relationship between Sustained Attention and PTSD Symptoms in Chinese Earthquake Orphans  [PDF]

The authors examined sustained attention performance and PTSD symptoms in a sample of 281 orphans and non-orphans who experienced the Sichuan Earthquake in China. They hypothesized that the orphans had a higher possibility to risk for PTSD than non-orphans, and the former also might even tend to be more impulsive, allergic which might affect their basic cognitive skill-attention. The findings showed evidence of cognitive developmental stages, from vigilance to numbness and avoidance, in the continuous performance test (CPT) task by including pre-earthquake orphans. The post-earthquake orphans were still in a high level of vigilance and performed well in the CPT task when compared with the pre-earthquake orphans. The non-orphans with high possibility to risk for PTSD were the most concentrated and least impulsive. Given the potentially mutual relationship between sustained attention and posttraumatic stress disorder, careful consideration must be given to the treatment of traumatized children who present with PTSD symptoms. In accordance with practice guidelines, a duplex informant, duplex measure approach in the decision of educational plans for these children is strongly recommended.

Abstract: The cognitive process of creativity has not been well studied in previous researches, which can not explain the essence of the creative behavior. There are several theories about the creativity cognitive process. Recent studies propose that the cognitive process of creativity had a general regularity from the information processing perspective. The creative process can be differentiated further into the primary process and the secondary process. The primary process produces, synthesizes, organizes the information; and subsequently the secondary process chooses, filters and monitors the source collected from the primary process. At the same time the two processes transform and interact with each other continuously during the creative process.

Abstract: In the field of research on creativity, the relationship between children's creativity and intelligence is one of the most arguable problems. In order to explain the relationship between creativity and intelligence, we developed a system model of creativity previously. In this paper parts of the hypothesis of the model Were tested. The correlation coefficient between creative thinking and one's interest and motivation were detected. The results showed, (1) the performances of intellectually gifted children on geometric, numeric and practical tests of creativity were significantly higher than the normal intellectual children; (2) there existed significant correlation coefficient between gifted children's creative thinking and their interest and motivation, (r=27- 76, p<05-001); (3) there existed significant correlation between the normal children,s creative thinking and their interest and motivation, too, (r =24-71, p < 05- 001 ; (4) the performance of creative thinking of the subjects with high scores of interest and motivation was higher than the subjects with low scores of interest and motivation. These results supported the hypotheses of the system model of creativity.
The relationship between executive functions and intelligence on 11- to 12-year-old children

Abstract: This study investigated the structure of the executive functions and their roles in intelligence on sixty-one children aged 11- to 12-year-old. Six executive function tasks and one intelligence test were carried out in the study. The confirmatory factor analysis has shown that the executive functions could be separated into three factors: updating, inhibition and shifting. These three factors were moderately correlated with each other, but were clearly separated. The present results were in line with previous findings from adults. There were significant correlations between measures of updating, inhibition and shifting, and intelligence. However, only the correlation between updating and intelligence remained significant when the correlations among executive functions were controlled. The study gave some theoretical support to the effect of executive functions training on intelligence and self-regulated learning.
The relationship between EEG band power, cognitive processing and intelligence in school-age children

Abstract: To investigate the differences in event-related potential parameters related to children’s intelligence and cognitive ability, 24 individuals from an experimental class of intellectually gifted children and 23 intellectually average children as the control group from a regular class were selected in the present study and the main neural mechanism pertaining to high intelligence was investigated. The electroen-cephalogram (EEG) was recorded and the relationship between different percentages of Delta, Theta, Alpha1, Alpha2, Beta1 and Beta2 and intelligence and cognitive ability were analyzed. The results suggested that Delta power activity in brighter individuals was more than that in normal individuals, and Alpha2 and Beta1 power activity in higher intelligence individuals were less than that in normal individuals. In high ability group, Alpha1 was significantly correlated with visual search ability, and Theta band correlated with simple abstract matching significantly. While in the normal group, Delta band related significantly with short term memory abilities. Spectral EEG parameters could be regarded as neural bases for fast reaction and a good tool to discriminate high intelligent children from the average.
