Abstract: this is a qualitative research that aimed at finding out opinions on the learning process that was used with the participants of the workshop "learning what is to be a nurse", presented at the 47o brazilian nursing congress, in goiania, in 1995, in order to analize the teaching strategies introduced during the workshop. data were collected from an evaluation questionnaire that was answered by the participants who were the subjects of this research. we submitted the answers to a content analysis using a thematic categoryzation and identified classes which distinguish or sometimes emphasize the searched strategies.

Abstract: the general purpose of this exploratory research was to understand the stress in different nursing occupations, aiming at determining the meaning of stress to nurses, identifying the stressors regarding different nursing occupational activities and investigating if the nurses' occupational activity is perceived as stressful. the sample consisted of three groups of nurses (clinical, managers and professors) working in the public service of the city of brasília and data were collected through semi-structured interviews. although the concept of stress is not clear among nurses, they do experience diverse stressors; related to intrinsic job factors, to relationships at work, to their roles and to the organizational structure.

Abstract: we present an exploratory study aiming at constructing an inventory to measure occupational stress in nurses ("inventário de estresse em enfermeiros" - iee). a set of items was initially constructed from previously defined categories based on interviews with nurses and then improved through semantic analysis by referees and a pilot-test with nursing students. a sample of 461 nurses - workers from the public services of the federal district - who answered the iee was used in the study. factorial analysis indicated the presence of a second-order global factor and three first-order factors: interpersonal relationships, stressful career roles and intrinsic job factors.

Abstract: depression has been observed in patients with chronic-degenerative diseases, including cancer. using different coping strategies can be extremely important under these pathological conditions, considering the presence of stress and unwanted feelings. the purpose of this systematic review was to identify types of studies aimed at promoting coping strategies for depression among women with cancer and interventions used to promote these strategies. three different electronic databases were reviewed, using the key words depression, coping and cancer to seek publications in english, portuguese and spanish, which resulted in 376 articles. the search was limited to female gender and the study types: clinical trial, meta-analysis, randomized control trial and review. after excluding studies whose full text was not available and repetitions in different databases, 22 articles were selected, originated in different countries (63% from north america) and published in journals from different knowledge areas; experimental (63%), recent (1996 till 2006); adopting individual (59.9%) or group strategies, among which emotional support and cognitive therapy were the most frequent. the identified interventions that promote coping strategies can be effective, significantly decrease depression and increase coping and quality of life. it is recommended that nurses use these strategies to reduce depression during the cancer treatment process.

Abstract: WHO IS THE NURSE? We developed a survey study to identify, in a determined group, what the social representation of the nurse is. The research was done in the Nursing Faculty of the Federal University of Goiás (UFG). To collect data we applied a questionnaire to a sample of 28 subjects that were visiting the Faculty at the time (they were attending a continuous education project: "The Community goes to the UFG"). The data analysis was based on the content of the subjects descriptions, trying to determine their meaning. The most frequent representations were "doctor s assistant", "someone who works with illness", "moral demand", "charitable job", "social recognition" and others.

Abstract: A depress o tem sido observada em portadores de doen as cr nico-degenerativas, incluindo cancer. A utiliza o de diferentes estratégias de coping nessas condi es patológicas pode ser extremamente importante, em face da presen a de fatores estressores e sentimentos indesejáveis. Buscou-se identificar, por meio de revis o sistemática, os tipos de estudo para promover estratégia de coping e as interven es utilizadas para promover tais estratégias em situa o de depress o, em mulheres com cancer. Foram consultadas três bases de dados eletr nicas, utilizando as palavras chave depression, coping e cancer para busca de publica es em Inglês, Português e Espanhol. A busca foi limitada ao gênero feminino e aos tipos de estudo: clinical trial, meta-analysis, randomized controlled trial e review. Foram encontrados 376 artigos, excluídos os que n o possuíam texto na íntegra disponível e as repeti es em diferentes bases de dados; foram eleitos 22 artigos oriundos de diferentes países (63% da America do Norte), e publicados em periódicos de diferentes áreas de conhecimento; s o de modelo experimental (63%); recentes (1996 a 2006); foram adotadas estratégias individuais (59,9%) e grupais; o suporte emocional e a terapia cognitiva foram as mais empregadas. As interven es que promovam estratégias de coping identificadas podem ser eficazes, com diminui o significante de depress o e aumento de coping e qualidade de vida; recomenda-se que o enfermeiro as empregue para redu o de depress o ao longo do processo terapêutico do cancer. La depresión ha sido observada en portadores de enfermedades cronico-degenerativas, incluyendo el cáncer. El uso de diferentes estrategias de coping para lidiar con estas condiciones patológicas puede ser extremadamente importante, en vista de la presencia de factores de estrés y sentimientos indeseables. Se buscó identificar, por medio de una revisión sistemática, los tipos de estudio para promover estrategias de coping y las intervenciones usadas para promover tales estrategias en situaciones de depresión en mujeres con cáncer. Fueron consultadas 3 bases de datos electrónicas, utilizando las palabras clave depression, coping y cáncer para buscar publicaciones en inglés, portugués y espa ol. Abstract: based on the understanding that students and nursing professionals demonstrate difficulties in being a “person” in the profession, we developed a descriptive and exploratory study with a qualitative approach. then, we offered during the "lind" ii nursing congress in the city of goiania a work-shop called “learning about nurse's entity”. among various processes of work-groups: the "scrap" was used as a kind of communication. it was a resource utilized in certain dynamics, being the object of our study that has the following goals: to identify the representation of nurse's "entity" to verify the interaction process "man-scrap" during the realization of the work and to verify if the object is represented as it really, is. we have seen that there are particularities in the representation of nurse's entity. regarding "man-scrap" interaction it had the followed sequence: finding strange the material and the proposal of work, manipulating and identifying objects, "scrap" selection and concretion of the job. with respect to the objects, we perceived a clear preference to the ones related to the profession. finally, we suggest that other studies about the "scrap" communication element, must be developed.

Abstract: this is a study elaborated on the basis of the course mental health-i, about the nurse formation through self-knowledge motivation. the goals were, to reflect about self-knowledge as a tool in the nurse formation and to analyze didactic strategies to facilitate its development. the data was collected during the course using written registers, self-evaluation and course evaluation. results showed that the student has the opportunity to develop her/his self-knowledge given that some teaching techniques stimulate the contact with personal issues, facilitating the discovery of potentiality for the professional practice. we concluded that the course has been playing a fundamental role in the nurse education.

Abstract: Estudo elaborado partindo-se da disciplina Saúde Mental-I sobre o desenvolvimento do enfermeiro por meio do estímulo ao autoconhecimento. Foram objetivos refletir sobre o autoconhecimento como ferramenta na forma o do enfermeiro e analisar estratégias didáticas facilitadoras ao desenvolvimento dessa habilidade. Os dados foram coletados no decorrer da disciplina, utilizando-se registros escritos, auto-avalia o e avalia o da disciplina. Os resultados mostraram que o aluno tem oportunidade de desenvolver seu autoconhecimento sendo que determinadas técnicas de ensino estimulam o contato com aspectos pessoais, facilitando a descoberta de potencialidades para a prática profissional. Concluímos que a disciplina tem desempenhado papel fundamental na forma o do enfermeiro.
Inorganic Elements in Eggs of Two Cavity-Nesting Passerine Species at and around Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, New Mexico  [PDF]

Abstract: Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) was established in 1943 as part of the Manhattan Project to build nuclear weapons, and currently operates as a national research laboratory. As part of an ongoing assessment of site-related ecological risk at LANL, western bluebird (Sialia mexicana) and ash-throated flycatcher (Myiarchus cinerascens) eggs were collected from 1997 to 2012 and analyzed for 18 inorganic elements. Concentrations of many inorganic elements in eggs were below reporting limits. Between species comparisons revealed that western bluebird eggs had higher levels of barium while ash-throated flycatcher eggs had higher levels of mercury. No statistically significant differences were observed in concentrations of inorganic elements in western bluebird eggs collected from the study area (which consists of areas within the current and historic LANL boundary) and from a non-industrial reference site; nor were any statistically significant differences observed between two canyons of interest, known to have received effluents and storm water runoff from LANL facilities, and the non-industrial reference site. Inorganic element levels detected in western bluebirds were typically within the range measured in eggs of other passerine in the published literature. These data suggest that concentrations of inorganic elements in passerine eggs collected from the study area appear to be at levels causing negligible risks to local bird populations.
