Seroprevalence, Seasonal Occurrence and Clinical Manifestation of Newcastle Disease in Rural Household Chickens in Plateau State, Nigeria

Abstract: A study on seroprevalence, seasonal occurrence and clinical manifestation of Newcastle Disease Virus (ND) among rural household chickens and Live Birds Markets (LBM) was conducted using haemagglutination Inhibition Test (HI) and questionnaires. A total of 1, 208 chickens reared under extensive management system in four Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Plateau State were used for the study. The seroprevalence of ND virus antibodies in rural chickens showed that there was no statistically significant (p > 0.05) difference among the four LGAs and of the 1,208 sera tested, 51.9% had detectable antibodies to NDV but only 14.1% of the chickens had HI antibody titre of > 4log2 which was considered as protective. About 86.2% of the chickens sampled were at risk of suffering from clinical ND. Newcastle disease outbreaks occurred year round in the villages sampled with the highest incidence of 86.6% observed from November to March (Dry season) and September to October, 8.31% (Pre-dry season). During outbreaks of ND, infected birds exhibit the following major clinical signs; nervous signs (32.4%), weakness (16.6%), whitish/greenish diarrhea (16.2%), coughing/sneezing 13.6%, anorexia 9.39% and others 11.8%. It was concluded that the prevalence of ND in the four LGAs of Plateau State is high. At the time of the study over 80% of rural chickens in Plateau State were at risk of dying from ND when exposed to a virulent NDV. It is therefore recommended that vaccination and improved management practices as a means of prevention against ND before the period of outbreaks should be instituted.
Rural Poultry Populations and Strains in Two Agro-Ecological Zones of Nigeria

Abstract: A study was conducted in Plateau State of Nigeria which has two distinct agro-ecological zones; a humid sub-temperate region in the North and a sub-humid hotter region that is part of the Northern Guinea Savanna ecological zone of Nigeria in the South. A sample of 1240 farmers from two Local Governments in each of the two ecological zones were surveyed to assess the poultry population and strains of birds as a prelude to the introduction of interventions for control of Newcastle Disease and other programs for improving rural poultry productivity. Results showed that the farmers owned an average of 20 chickens, 6 ducks, 0.3 turkeys, 1 pigeon and 1.2 guinea fowls per household. Each household reared two or more strains of chicken and most had different types of poultry in the same backyard. There were more Naked neck and long legged chickens in the hotter ecological zone but more Barred plumage strains in the cooler ecological zone.

Structural Evolution of the ABC Transporter Subfamily B

Abstract: The ATP binding cassette containing transporters are a superfamily of integral membrane proteins that translocate a wide range of substrates. The subfamily B members include the biologically important multidrug resistant (MDR) protein and the transporter associated with antigen processing (TAP) complex. Substrates translocated by this subfamily include drugs, lipids, peptides and iron. We have constructed a comprehensive set of comparative models for the transporters from eukaryotes and used these to study the effects of sequence divergence on the substrate translocation pathway. Notably, there is very little structural divergence between the bacterial template structure and the more distantly related eukaryotic proteins illustrating a need to conserve transporter structure. By contrast different properties have been adopted for the translocation pathway depending on the substrate type. A greater level of divergence in electrostatic properties is seen with transporters that have a broad substrate range both within and between species, while a high level of conservation is observed when the substrate range is narrow. This study represents the first effort towards understanding effect of evolution on subfamily B ABC transporters in the context of protein structure and biophysical properties.
Nutrient Intakes of Adolescent Girls in Secondary Schools and Universities in Abia State of Nigeria

Abstract: A total of 160 adolescent girls aged 10 to 19 years were surveyed for nutrient intake. Three-days weighed food intake was the technique used for this study. Subjects were from model secondary schools and universities in Abia State, Nigeria. The values for food nutrients were calculated using food composition tables. Foods that were not in the food composition tables were analyzed chemically in the laboratory to know their nutrient contents. Values from the chemical analysis were used for the calculation of food nutrients. The mean intakes in all the nutrients tested for adolescent female university students were significantly higher (p<0.05) than those of adolescent female secondary school girls. Both adolescent female secondary school and university students, however, had nutrient intakes higher than FAO requirements except for iron intake where the secondary school girls did not meet the requirement for iron (36-42 g/day). Snacks contribution to the daily nutrient intakes of the adolescent female secondary school students were significantly higher (p<0.05) than those of the university students except for the carbohydrate intake (146.66 g vs 170.26 g) respectively. It is therefore necessary to evaluate the quality of meals and snacks served to both secondary school and university students to know their contribution to nutrient intake in order to alleviate the problem of malnutrition in adolescent female Nigerian students.
Effect of Processing on the Protein Quality of African Yambean and Bambara Groundnut Supplemented with Sorghum or Crayfish in Rats

Abstract: Forty-eight adult Wistar albino male rats (75-128 g) of age 8 weeks were used to study the effect of processing on the protein quality of African Yam Bean (AYB) and Bambara Groundnut (BG) supplemented with sorghum or crayfish. The rats were fed for 10 days. Three out of the ten days were adjustment and the rest for the balance period. Eight diets were formulated and fed to the rats. The mixed protein diets provided 10% protein daily for the entire study period. Casein (CA) was served as a reference protein. The N content of the food, urine and feces were analyzed using AOAC (1980) procedure. As judged by protein quality, rats fed the control diet had significant decreases (p<0.05) in all the parameters tested except for digested N (0.91 g) urinary N (0.11 g) and apparent digestibility (94.79%). Addition of an equal amount of Crayfish (CR) to sorghum (S) as a supplement decreased food intake, N intake and Nitrogen Balance (NB) in both Dehulled African Yam Bean (DAYB) and Soaked Brown Bambara Groundnut (SBBG). Dehulling of White Bambara Groundnut (DWGB) resulted to increases in all the parameters tested except for urinary N (0.05 g) and apparent digestibility (84.68%) as compared to the brown variety. Soaking of White Bambara Groundnut (SWBG) decreased protein quality in all the parameters tested as compared with the brown variety except for Biological Value (BV) (94.12%) and Net Protein Utilization (NPU) (76.92%). As judged by N intakes (1.24 g) digested N (1.05 g) and biological value (95.24%) the DWGB:S18 diet appears to contain much more desirable pattern of Essential Amino Acid (EAA) than the other test diets. The result showed that it could be of great importance to people living in areas where these foods are staple.
