Abstract: hypericum brasiliense choisy, plant of the guttiferae family, occurs mainly in the regions southeastern and south of brazil. xanthones, phloroglucinols, flavonoids and other compounds were isolated from this species. there are not registrations in the literature of the chemical composition of the essential oil of this species, in spite of the importance of these compounds in the chemistry of the genera. in this work, it was done the chemical study of the volatile fraction obtained by hidrodestilation of h. brasiliense and this fraction was analyzed by cg/ms.

Abstract: the paper describes the microscopic characteristics of the leaves of bauhinia blakeana dunn., known in brazil as "pata de vaca" and used as a hypoglycemic remedy. transverse sections and epidermal dissociations indicate the presence of a dorsiventral mesophyll protected by epidermis with trichomes of diverse types and paracytic and anomocytic stomata. the petiole, which is plane-convex, pubescent, shows two excrescences, an angular collenchyma and collateral and bicollateral vascular bundles.

Abstract: the microscopic characteristics of the stems of lippia alba and melissa officinalis, both known in brazil as "erva cidreira" and consumed by the population in virtue of their sedative and antispasmodic properties, were analyzed. analysis of the transverse section these stems, which often appear mixed with the leaves of the two species, help in the differentiation of the raw plant material.

Abstract: in this study thirty shrimp samples from commercial marine shrimp (l. vannamei) farms of southern region of brazil were obtained. hepatopancreas and shell scrapings fragments collected in these animals were processed by transmission electron microscopy using negative staining (rapid preparation), immunoelectron microscopy and immunocytochemistry (immunolabelling with colloidal gold particles) techniques. on the transmission electron microscopy a great number of white spot virus particles, ovoid or bacilliform-to-ellipsoid, measured 230-290 nm in length and 80-160 nm in diameter with intra-nuclear projections were visualized by the negative staining technique in 27 (90%) out of 30 samples examined. using immunoelectron microscopy technique, the anti-vp 664 serum agllutinated a large number of particles formed by antigen-antibody interaction. in the immunocytochemistry technique, the antigen-antibody reaction was styrongly marked by the particles of colloidal gold over the virus. notably, this is the first report, to our knowledge, describing use of these microscopy techniques to study brazilian l. vannamei marine shrimp samples; moreover, this methodology also appears to be a viable complementary tool for diagnosing the presence of the white spot virus within shrimp tissues. importantly, these are the first photoelectron micrographs of the wssv in brazil.

Abstract: composites are a class of materials which have superlative properties in relation to the isotropic materials (metals, ceramics and polymers) if one can look to a combination of high resistance and low weight. the reinforcement fibers, the matrix and the interface between them define the performance and the maximum temperature of the component in service. composites designed to work under temperatures higher than 1000°c are called thermo-structural composites. because of their high thermal shock resistance, these materials are used in critical applications such as kick motor nozzles, thermal protections for re-entry ablative and reradiative systems and aircraft brakes. they are usually made by using preforms, that are assembled rods forming a "skeleton" that translates rigidity and strength to the material. the use of preform technology allows an enormous variety of complex geometries and dimensions, which consequently allows flexibility in the design of the component. although presenting incontestable advantages, the cost of these materials is still prohibitive to common industrial applications. the mechanical tests costs to validate the properties are also high and special equipments are necessary to make them practical. the present work describes the analytical methods to predict elastic properties of thermo structural composites known as carbon fiber reinforced composites (cfrc) having tri directional (3d) and tetra directional (4d) architectures, in order to make an valuable analysis of their results. properties were calculated at ambient temperature, and comparisons were made with the properties of graphites formerly used as a standard material for kick rocket motor nozzles. the predictions of elastic properties were based on the homogenization method, considering the hypothesis of straight fiber bundles, resulting in ponderal average elastic properties.
Nonlinear dynamics and control strategies: On a energy harvester vibrating system with a linear form to non-ideal motor torquet

Abstract: In this paper, we deal with the research of a vibrating model of an energy harvester device, including the nonlinearities in the model of the piezoelectric coupling and the non-ideal excitation. We show, using numerical simulations, in the analysis of the dynamic responses, that the harvested power is influenced by non-linear vibrations of the structure. Chaotic behavior was also observed, causing of the loss of energy throughout the simulation time. Using a perturbation technique, we find an approximate analytical solution for the non-ideal system. Then, we apply both two control techniques, to keep the considered system, into a stable condition. Both the State Dependent Ricatti Equation (SDRE) control as the feedback control by changing the energy of the oscillator, were efficient in controlling of the considered non-ideal system.

Abstract: relata-se a ocorrência de sarcopromusca pruna como vetor biológico de dermatobia hominis no sul do brasil. o díptero foi capturado em janeiro de 2003 em armadilha malaise, permanentemente instalada desde julho de 2002, como parte de um estudo de diversidade de muscoidea no bioma campos sulinos, extremo sul do rio grande do sul. o espécime estava carreando 18 ovos de d. hominis na por??o látero-ventral direita do abdome.

Abstract: fragments of the uterus-vaginal junction of 16 adult female turkeys were investigated aiming to determine the morphometrical and histological modifications in the tubuli spermatici (tubular sperm glands) during the breeding (august to march) and non-breeding (april to july) seasons. the studies were performed in dissected oviducts processed for histology, histochemistry, and morphometry of the tubuli spermatici (ts), structures which are originated from invaginations of the uterus-vaginal epithelium. ts are simple tubular glands, lined by a columnar epithelium formed by light and dark narrow cells, which presented euchromatic nucleus and apical microvillus. the ts epithelium secretion was negative for pas and alcian blue stains, indicating the absence of mucosubstances. the tubular length, tubular volume, luminal volume, number of ts, as well as external and internal diameter, cellular height, and number of cells per tubule showed significant differences between the reproductive phases (breeding and non-breeding). in the breeding season, all these morphometrical parameters were increased when compared with the ones from the non-breeding season. clusters of sperm in the lumen of the glands, as well vesicles in the cytoplasm of both light and dark epithelial cells, were observed in the breeding season. in the non-breeding season, luminal sperm, vesicles, and dark cells were not observed in the ts glands.
Bearing properties of portuguese pine wood beneath a laterally loaded dowel

Abstract: the pine wood (pinus pinaster ait.) is one of the species with larger implantation in portugal. its use for structural applications requires an adequate knowledge of its mechanical behaviour. in particular, for designing doweled joints, it is essential to know the bearing properties beneath the dowel. this paper reports a comprehensive experimental program aiming the determination of the bearing properties of the portuguese pine wood. the embedding strength is evaluated in longitudinal and radial directions according two alternative standards, namely the astm d 5764 and en 383 standards. results are compared with empirical relations proposed in design codes of practice (e.g. ec5). also, foundation moduli are evaluated in both directions according both standards. the experimental work also includes the test of a single dowel double shear wood connection. additionally, some elastic strength properties are evaluated from small specimens of clear wood in order to better characterize the mechanical behaviour of the wood species.

O pinheiro (Pinus pinaster Ait.) é uma das espécies com maior implanta o em Portugal. A sua utiliza o para aplica es estruturais requer um conhecimento adequado do seu comportamento mecanico. Em particular, para o projecto de liga es do tipo cavilha é essencial conhecer as propriedades de resistência ao esmagamento localizado. Este trabalho consiste num extenso programa experimental com vista à determina o destas propriedades, usando madeira de pinho Português. A resistência ao esmagamento localizado é avaliada nas direc es longitudinal e radial, segundo duas normas alternativas, nomeadamente a ASTM D 5764 e EN 383. Os resultados s o comparados com as rela es empíricas propostas em códigos de projecto actuais (ex: EC5). O módulo de funda o também é avaliado nas duas direc es, segundo ambas as normas. O trabalho experimental inclui ainda uma série de ensaios de uma liga o de corte duplo e cavilha única. Algumas propriedades elásticas e de resistência da madeira limpa foram aferidas com base em ensaios, a fim de melhor caracterizar o comportamento mecanico da espécie Pinus pinaster Ait.
