The European Journal of Psychiatry , 2009,
Abstract: Background: We examined whether motor speed assessed by the finger tapping test predicts generalized and specific stable deficits because of a common pathogenic process in bipolar and schizophrenic patients. Methods: One hundred and two patients underwent a battery of neuropsychological tests. Patients with a score of less than one standard deviation from their siblings', sample in two assessments with an interval of one year were defined as suffering from stable deficits because of a common pathogenic process. In addition to univariate analyses, factor analyses, ordinal logistic regression, and multiple linear regressions were used. A general score was also calculated. Results: No differences were found between schizophrenic and bipolar patients in the deficits of verbal fluency, shift reasoning ability and executive attention. Schizophrenic patients had greater persistent cognitive deficit because of a common pathogenic factor in the verbal memory dimension than bipolar patients. Motor speed predicted the specific deficits of verbal fluency, shift reasoning, executive attention and the general deficit of both bipolar I and schizophrenic patients. Bipolar patients suffered a lesser specific deficit in the verbal memory dimension than schizophrenic patients did, this domain not being predicted by motor speed. Motor speed predicted the generalized deficit and the specific dimensions in which schizophrenic and bipolar patients showed no differences. Conclusions: These results suggest the presence of general and specific stable cognitive deficits because of a common pathogenic factor related to psychomotor slowness. Motor speed seems to be suitable endophenocognitype for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Abstract: background: about two-thirds of patients with bipolar disorder (bd) have a lifetime history of at least one psychotic symptom. objective: to compare the neurocognitive performance of four groups: bd patients with and without a history of psychotic symptoms (bd hps+ and bd hps-, respectively); patients with schizophrenia (sz); and healthy control (hc) subjects. method: in this cross-sectional study, 35 stabilized patients with sz, 79 euthymic (44 hps+ and 35 hps-) patients with bd, and 50 hc were administered a comprehensive battery of neuropsychological tests. results: there was worse neurocognitive functioning in both bd and sz patients compared to hc. overall, data from both groups of bd patients did not differ on sociodemographic, clinical, or neurocognitive variables. however, bd hps+ patients had significantly more negative symptoms, as measured by the positive and negative syndrome scale (panss), and showed a trend toward worse performance on executive functions compared to bd hps- patients. moreover, both bd groups had better performance on all neurocognitive tests compared to sz group. conclusions: neurocognitive dysfunction may be more marked in sz than in bd, yet qualitatively similar. a history of past psychotic symptoms in bd was not associated with more severe cognitive impairment during euthymia. therefore, bd with psychotic symptoms does not appear to be a distinct neurocognitive phenotype.
EL USO DE INDICADORES DE DESEMPE O NORMALIZADOS PARA LA VALORACIóN DE JUGADORES: EL CASO DE LAS ESTADíSTICAS POR MINUTO EN BALONCESTO

Motricidad : European Journal of Human Movement , 2010,
Palabras Clave: normalización, baloncesto, desempe o, estadísticas ABSTRACT This research empirically tests the hypothesis underlying the use of performance indicators in basketball, when they are normalized using the “per-minute” criterion: There is no association among normalized indicators and the minutes played by each player. This assumption is a necessary requirement in order to compare players using normalized indicators, because if this assumption is not met, then there would be a possible bias in the rankings of each statistical category. We apply several under-used methods in this type of research, such as the analysis of the intra-player variability and the structural equation modelling. Results show that there is no lineal association between the minutes played and the different per-minute normalized categories as: points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks. We discuss implications for sport performance and marketing. Therefore, this study contributes to the advance in one of the growing areas of sports research; such as basketball metrics. LAS ACTITUDES HACIA EL SERVICIO DEPORTIVO VARíAN SEGúN EL GRADO DE EXPERIENCIA DEL CONSUMIDOR?
J. A. Martínez,L. Martínez
Motricidad : European Journal of Human Movement , 2010,
ABSTRACT This research has analysed if consumer evaluations of a sports service, manifested by satisfaction and perceived quality, differ to the extent that consumer experience varies. For that purpose, we have achieved three cross-sectional studies on different samples of users of a sports centre. The results show that newer and more experienced customers adjust their expectations in the same way. In addition, perceived quality and satisfaction differs because customers admit that they can be very satisfied with a service, although the service does not reach the highest level of excellence. Moreover, both attitudes are very positive. Satisfaction and quality do not depend on experience, because newer customers do not create illusory expectations about the service. Finally, implications and limitations are discussed. Key Words: Consumer experience; perceived quality; satisfaction; sports services.
