Entropy-based disciplinarity indicator: role taxonomy of journals in scientific communication systems and isolation degree. Knowledge importation/exportation profiles from journals and disciplines
J. Manana-Rodriguez
Computer Science , 2013,
Abstract: In this research, a new indicator of disciplinarity-multidisciplinarity is developed, discussed and applied. EBDI is based on the combination of the frequency distribution of subject categories of journals citing or cited by the analysis unit and the spread and diversity of the citations among subject categories measured with Shannon-Wiener entropy. Its reproducibility, robustness and consistence are discussed. Four of the combinations of its values when applied to the cited and citing dimensions lead to a suggested taxonomy of the role that the studied unit might have in terms of the transformation of knowledge from different disciplines in the scientific communication system and its position respect a hypothetical thematic core of the discipline in which it has been classified. The indicator is applied to the journals belonging to the first quartile of JCR-SSCI 2011 Library and Information Science and an indicator-based taxonomy is applied and discussed, pointing to differential thematic roles of the journals analyzed.

Abstract: This paper presents the results and further development of a survey sent to 11,799 Spanish faculty members and researchers from various fields of the social sciences and the humanities, obtaining a total of 45.6% (5,368 responses) usable answers. Respondents were asked (a) to indicate the three most important journals in their field and (b) to rate them on a 0-10 scale according to their quality. The information obtained has been synthesized in two indicators which reflect the perceived quality of journals. Once the values were obtained, the journals were categorized according to each indicator and the ordinal positions were compared. Different profiles of journals are analyzed in connection with experts opinion, such as regional orientation, and the consensus among researchers is studied. Finally, the possibilities of extending the research and indicators to sets of international journals are explored.

Abstract: The changes of blood erythrocytes transport function in patients with prostate adenocarcinoma have been studied according to alterations in Na+/K+-ATP-ase activity and permeability of Na+ and K+ ions, before and after the plastic orchiectomy. The results of the study revealed that activity of Na+/K+-ATP-ase was increased compared with the data before the orchiectomy, but this parameter was reduced compared with control group. The increased amounts of the Na+ as well as K+ ions were also observed in the extracellular area compared with the same data before the orchiectomy. The amount of cholesterol, after plastic orchiectomy, was reduced compared with the data gained before orchiectomy, but the data were greater than those of the control group. It may be presumed that one of the reasons for change of Na+/K+-ATP-ase activity is variation of cholesterol content in erythrocyte membrane. Changes of the active transport system, in turn, affect the transport function of the erythrocyte membrane. In spite of surgical intervention, full recovery of patients does not take place after the plastic orchiectomy. Comparative normalization and approaching to the control group of the given indices in post-operation period (~6 months after surgery) indicate strengthening of the immune system and correspondinglyprotective abilities of an organism, which was proved by the anamneses of patients.

Abstract: Our work is an analysis of Cagigal's writings, trying to define the central themes of his educational theory through playing games. Finally these educational theories are illustrated through certain analogies with Homer, Pindarus, Plato, Rousseau, Pestalozzi, Fr bel, Coubertain, Maritain, Kirk and Groupe.
Prediction Capabilities of VLF/LF Emission as the Main Precursor of Earthquake

Physics , 2013,
Abstract: Recent satellite and ground-based observations proved that in earthquake preparation period in the seismogenic area we have VLF/LF and ULF electromagnetic emissions. According to the opinion of the authors of the present paper this phenomenon is more universal and reliable than other earthquake indicators. Hypothetically, in case of availability of adequate methodological grounds, in the nearest future, earth VLF/LF electromagnetic emission might be declared as the main precursor of earthquake. In particular, permanent monitoring of frequency spectrum of earth electromagnetic emission generated in the earthquake preparation period might turn out very useful with the view of prediction of large (M 5) inland earthquakes. The present paper offers a scheme of the methodology according to which the reality of the above given hypothesis can be checked up. To prove the prediction capabilities of earth electromagnetic emission we have used avalanche-like unstable model of fault formation and an analogous model of electromagnetic contour, synthesis of which, according to our opinion, is rather harmonious.

Journal of Cancer Therapy (JCT) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/jct.2014.55047

Objectives: The aim of the investigation was to study the hormonal status (sex hormones: estradiol (E2), progesterone (P), testosterone (T); non-sex gonadotropic hormones-luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)) of women with benign and malignant tumors of uterine body in the reproductive, menopause and postmenopause periods. Also the distribution features of the blood ABO system phenotype groups and their link to the development of uterine body tumors have been studied. Methods: The determination of hormones was made by the enzyme analysis method (ELAIZA), provided by the proper ELAIZA kits. For the study of blood ABO system antigens, internationally recognized immunoserology methods were used. Results: Investigations revealed the increased level of E2 and T on the background of the reduced P in the blood of the women with uterine tumors in the reproductive, menopause and post-menopause period. As for gonadotropic hormones, the decreased levels of LH and FSH have also been detected. From the ABO system phenotype groups A(II) group had the highest frequency between the women with malignant uterine tumor in the reproductive age. O

Abstract: In 1997, Argentina gave priority to asbestos in its National Plan for the Sound Management of Chemicals, and it was the subject of a Technical Task Force on Occupational Cancer. After five years of public hearings in which government, workers, industry advocates, environmentalists, clinicians, scientists, and consumers participated, it was agreed that asbestos exposure is a risk factor for both workers and the general population, and that Argentina should provide to its people the same protections adopted by many developed countries. Pressure from asbestos industry groups initially delayed the inclusion of chrysotile asbestos in the proposed ban, but on January 1, 2003, the mining and import of all forms of asbestos were banned in Argentina.

Fermion Analogy for Layered Superconducting Films in Parallel Magnetic Field
J. P. Rodriguez
Physics , 1996, DOI: 10.1209/epl/i1997-00538-7
Abstract: The equivalence between the Lawrence-Doniach model for films of extreme type-II layered superconductors and a generalization of the back-scattering model for spin-1/2 electrons in one dimension is demonstrated. This fermion analogy is then exploited to obtain an anomalous $H_{\parallel}^{-1}$ tail for the parallel equilibrium magnetization of the minimal double layer case in the limit of high parallel magnetic fields $H_{\parallel}$ for temperatures in the critical regime.
Do the Profile Function singularities explain the high energy reflection of fermions in a phase transition?
J. Rodriguez-Quintero
Physics , 1996, DOI: 10.1016/S0370-2693(96)01408-6
Abstract: We investigate the scope of a previous result concerning the behaviour of fermions hitting a general wall caused by a first-order phase transition. The wall profile function was considered to be analytic in the real axis. The previous result is valid for analytic functions in the whole complex plane except in certain isolated singularities located out of the real axis. A non-analytic profile function in the real axis is studied in order to show the validity of the result for any profile which can be put as a certain limit of a function which verifies the latter. A new understanding of the high energy behaviour of the quantum reflection caused by a sharp profile, as the step, arises from that study.
