Abstract: With the aim to determine the toxinologic, clinical and epidemiological features of scorpion stings and of experimental envenoming induced by T. fuhrmanni, a study was performed during one year in a sample of 9% of thehouses (180) and of the population of the area (719 inhabitants) from El Volador hill and its contiguousneighborhoods San Germán and El Volador, Medellín.Gathering of alive specimens (128) and venom collect wereincluded for the experimental study. The dispersion rate forT. fuhrmanni was 100% for the study area, with high infestation of houses located on the hill and in the neighborhood San Germán (100% and 32,3%, respectively). There were 32 stings by T. fuhrmanni during one year, 7(21,9%) in children, 46,9% at El Volador hill and 31,2% atthe neighborhood San Germán, for sting rates of 83% and3,9%, respectively. Eighteen (56,3%) of the stings were inside of the dwellings mainly on a hand (31,3%), head or neck(18,8%) and during the night or in the morning (62,5%).Twenty nine (90,6%) of the cases had mild envenomation, moderate in 3 children (9,4%) who had systemic signs(generalized sweating, abdominal pain). There were neithersevere cases nor patients admitted to the hospitals. Tityusfuhrmanni venom yield was 0,56 ± 0,27 mg with an i.p. DL50 of 79,2 μg (3,9 mg venom/kg) in mice (18-20 g). The animals presented sialorrhea, piloerection, drowsiness, generalized sweating, tachypnea, cyanosis, ataxia and seizures before expiring. The rapid onset (10-15 min) of the envenoming signs in mice as well as fast melioration (2 hours) in the survivors, allow us to conclude that the venom is of fast absorption, distribution and elimination.
Obtention of highly purified fractions of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid from sardine oil by silver-resin chromatography. A semipreparative procedure.
Nieto, S.,Córdoba, Ana M.,Sanhueza, J.,Valenzuela, A.
Grasas y Aceites , 1997,
Abstract: Pure fractions of eicosapentaenoic acid (ERA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) were obtained from silver-resin column chromatography of ERA+DHA concentrates obtained from sardine oil. Two types of silver-impregnated resins were assayed; Amberlite IR-118H and Dowex 50 W-HCR-W2.The Amberlite-silver column allows the separation of almost pure fractions (98.5%) of ERA, being unable to separate DHA from other polyunsaturated fatty acids. The Dowex-silver column does not separate the ERA from the concentrate but allows the isolation of a highly purified fraction of DHA. The chromatographic procedure described may provide pure forms of two important n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids for nutritional or pharmacological research or as substrates for the obtention of structured lipids.

Abstract: Pancreatic pseudocyst is a common complication of acute and chronic pancreatitis. Extrapancreatic locations of pancreatic pseudocyst in the liver, pleura, mediastinum, or pelvis have been described. However, a pancreatic pseudocyst located in the liver is an infrequent condition. We present the case of a 46-year-old man with pancreatic pseudocyst located in the liver secondary to chronic alcoholic pancreatitis. During admission, the patient underwent an abdominal CT scan that showed a mass located in the head and body of the pancreas, as well as a thrombosis of the splenic vein. A percutaneous needle aspiration biopsy of the pancreas was obtained under CT guidance, which showed no tumoral involvement. Fourty-eight hours after the procedure the patient developed abdominal pain and elevated serum amylase levels. A pancreatic MRI exam showed two pancreatic pseudocysts, one of them located in the left hepatic lobe, the other in the pancreatic tail. Chronic pancreatitis signs also were found. Enteral nutrition via a nasojejunal tube was administered for two weeks. The disappearance of the pancreatic pseudocyst located in the pancreatic tail, and a subtotal resolution of the pancreatic pseudocyst located in the liver were observed. To date twenty-seven cases of pancreatic pseudocyst located in the liver have been published, most of them managed with percutaneous or surgical drainage.

Abstract: In this work high purity and nanometer character titanium carbonitride TiCxN1-x powders were obtained by mechanically induced self sustaining reaction (MSR) in a high-energy planetary ball mill, from a mixture of titanium with graphite or carbon nanofiber (CNFs) in a nitrogen atmosphere. A promising method for developing these materials is the coupling of the MSR with SPS sintering technique. The product is sintered at 1400 oC and 1700 oC, obtaining a completely dense monolithic ceramic ( > 99% t.d). In this work, the influence of SPS treatment and carbon precursor on material microstructures was studied and the main mechanical properties of the end material were evaluated.
