Field Emission in CEBAF's Superconducting RF Cavities and Implications for Future Accelerators

Abstract: Field emission is one of the key issues in superconducting RF for particle accelerators. When present, it limits operating gradient directly or via induced heat load at 2K. In order to minimize particulate contamination of and thus field emission in the CEBAF SRF cavities during assembly, a cold ceramic RF window was placed very close to the accelerating cavity proper. As an unintended consequence of this, the window is charged by field-emitted electrons, making it possible to monitor and model field emission in the CEBAF cavities since in-tunnel operation began. From January 30, 1995, through February 10, 2003, there were 64 instances of spontaneous onset or change in cavity field emission with a drop in usable gradient averaging 1.4 (sigma 0.8) MV/m at each event. Fractional loss averaged 0.18 (sigma 0.12) of pre-event gradient. This event count corresponds to 2.4 events per century per cavity, or 8 per year in CEBAF. It is hypothesized that changes in field emission are due to adsorbed gas accumulation. The possible implications of this and other observations for the International Linear Collider (ILC) and other future accelerators will be discussed.

As an unintended consequence of this, it has been possible to monitor and model field emission in the CEBAF cavities since in-tunnel operation began. The ceramic is charged by field emission to a stable voltage and then discharges. This phenomenon had to be studied statistically to minimize the number of interruptions to accelerator operation for nuclear physics. We report here the results of our twenty year study of this and related phenomena.

Abstract: Vibrational nonequilibrium effects in charge transport through single-molecule junctions are investigated. Focusing on molecular bridges with multiple electronic states, it is shown that electronic-vibrational coupling triggers a variety of vibronic emission and absorption processes, which influence the conductance properties and mechanical stability of single-molecule junctions profoundly. Employing a master equation and a nonequilibrium Green's function approach, these processes are analyzed in detail for a generic model of a molecular junction and for benzenedibutanethiolate bound to gold electrodes.
Multimode vibrational effects in single molecule conductance: A nonequilibrium Green's function approach

Abstract: The role of multimode vibrational dynamics in electron transport through single molecule junctions is investigated. The study is based on a generic model, which describes charge transport through a single molecule that is attached to metal leads. To address vibrationally-coupled electron transport, we employ a nonequilibrium Green's function approach that extends a method recently proposed by Galperin et al. [Phys. Rev. B 73, 045314 (2006)] to multiple vibrational modes. The methodology is applied to two systems: a generic model with two vibrational degrees of freedom and benzenedibutanethiolate covalently bound to gold electrodes. The results show that the coupling to multiple vibrational modes can have a significant effect on the conductance of a molecular junction. In particular, we demonstrate the effect of electronically induced coupling between different vibrational modes and study nonequilibrium vibrational effects by calculating the current-induced excitation of vibrational modes.
Biphasisches Insulinaspart 70 (BIAsp 70, NovoMix(R) 70) in der intensivierten konventionellen Insulintherapie bei Typ-2-Diabetes: Eine sterreichische Anwendungsbeobachtung

Abstract: Insulin NovoMix 70 ist ein modernes biphasisches Insulin. Durch eine neue Zusammensetzung des kurz- und langwirksamen Anteils (70 % schnellwirksames Insulin und 30 % langwirkende Insulinaspart-Protamin-Kristalle) ist es nun m glich, eine bereits existierende Insulin-Therapie zu intensivieren oder eine moderne Mischinsulin-Therapie patientengerecht anzupassen. Die Ergebnisse zahlreicher klinischer Studien und bisherige klinische Erfahrungen stellen folgende therapeutische Vorteile von NovoMix 70 in den Vordergrund: ● Einfache Intensivierung der Insulintherapie. ● Vergleichbare Wirksamkeit wie unter Basis- Bolus-Therapie beim Typ-2-Diabetes [1, 2]. ● Individuelle Therapie (Monotherapie oder in Kombination mit NovoMix 30 [2] bzw. in Kombination mit Metformin). ● Physiologische Zusammensetzung der schnellwirkenden und langsamen Insulinkomponenten (Bolus- und Basis-Insulin in einem Insulinprodukt). ● Gute Wirksamkeit bezogen auf postprandiale Blutzuckeranstiege [1]. ● Mahlzeitbezogene Injektion (unmittelbar davor, w hrend oder nach der Hauptmahlzeit). ● Kein Bedarf für Zwischenmahlzeiten bessere Gewichtskontrolle m glich. ● Verabreichung mit NovoPen 4. ● Kostengünstige und effiziente Insulintherapie. Die NovoMix 70-Anwendungsbeobachtung ist eine Beobachtungsstudie (Anwendungsbeobachtung nach § 2 des sterreichischen Arzneimittelgesetzes) mit dem Ziel, das Konzept der modernen konventionellen Insulintherapie mit NovoMix 70 Penfill (mit NovoPen 4) bei Typ-2-Diabetikern im klinischen Alltag zu untersuchen. Neben den Wirksamkeits- und Vertr glichkeitsparametern wurde der Therapieerfolg, beurteilt durch Arzt und Patient, untersucht. Insgesamt nahmen w hrend einer durchschnittlichen Beobachtungsdauer von 91 Tagen 619 Patienten mit Diabetes mellitus Typ 2 teil. 48,1 % der Teilnehmer waren m nnlich und 51,1 % weiblich (0,8% ohne Geschlechtsangabe). Die Teilnehmer hatten ein Durchschnittsalter von 63,4 Jahren, eine Diabetesdauer von 12,8 Jahren und einen mittleren HbA1c von 9,3 %.
Mental health measures of anxiety and depression in patients with retinal detachment

Abstract: In this study, the researchers examined anxious and depressive symptoms of patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) prior to and up to year after retinal detachment surgery. One hundred and thirteen (113) patients with RRD took part in this prospective longitudinal study. Anxiety and depression were evaluated using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Visual acuity (VA) results and HADS scores of all participants were recorded prior to and 3, 6 and 12 months after retinal detachment surgery. Pearson correlation analysis showed a significant association between the patients' VA and HADS psychological scores both prior to and three months after surgery, regardless of the type of surgery performed. Psychological distress is a significant problem associated with retinal detachments that requires more attention.
Vibronic effects in single molecule conductance: First-principles description and application to benezenealkanethiolates between gold electrodes

Abstract: The effect of vibrational motion on resonant charge transport through single molecule junctions is investigated. The study is based on a combination of first-principles electronic structure calculations to characterize the system and inelastic scattering theory to calculate transport properties. The extension of the methodology to describe hole transport through occupied molecular orbitals is discussed. The methodology is applied to molecular junctions where a benzene molecule is connected via alkanethiolate bridges to two gold electrodes. The results demonstrate that, depending on the coupling between the electronic $\pi$-system of the benzene ring and the gold electrodes, vibronic coupling may have a significant influence on the transport properties of the molecular junction.
