Pioneer 10 Doppler data analysis: disentangling periodic and secular anomalies
A. Levy,B. Christophe,P. Berio,G. Metris,J-M. Courty,S. Reynaud
Physics , 2008, DOI: 10.1016/j.asr.2009.01.003
Abstract: This paper reports the results of an analysis of the Doppler tracking data of Pioneer probes which did show an anomalous behaviour. A software has been developed for the sake of performing a data analysis as independent as possible from that of J. Anderson et al. \citep{anderson}, using the same data set. A first output of this new analysis is a confirmation of the existence of a secular anomaly with an amplitude about 0.8 nms$^{-2}$ compatible with that reported by Anderson et al. A second output is the study of periodic variations of the anomaly, which we characterize as functions of the azimuthal angle $\varphi$ defined by the directions Sun-Earth Antenna and Sun-Pioneer. An improved fit is obtained with periodic variations written as the sum of a secular acceleration and two sinusoids of the angles $\varphi$ and $2\varphi$. The tests which have been performed for assessing the robustness of these results are presented.

Between women: The subtle voice of femininity in children’s stories
J-M Dederen
Tydskrif vir letterkunde , 2012,
Abstract: The purpose of this essay is to illustrate and explore the representation of women in a selection of eight African children’s stories from Vhembe, in the Limpopo Province. The discussion is shaped primarily by the shared knowledge of the female elders who provided the narratives and participated in their analysis. The argument put forward is plain and simple: storytelling is one of many stratagems by means of which rural women—far from being passive spectators, nor willing consumers of a patriarchal world view—have created an autonomous physical and symbolic space for themselves, in opposition to the “stronger sex”. By combining anthropological analysis with indigenous exegesis, it was established that some of the selected narratives reveal the voices of women’s “protest”, the nature of which is subtle and understated rather than rebellious or subversive.

Abstract: This paper examines some examples from the correspondence of the secondcentury rhetor, the Romanised African M. Cornelius Fronto, in particular letters that relate to the death of his grandson, drawing conclusions about Fronto as grandfather and as a person who had sustained previous bereavements. His attitude to his daughter Cratia2 and son-in-law Aufidius Victorinus receives special attention. The question of why Fronto seems to favour Victorinus over his own daughter when both are plunged into grief is addressed. It seems that in the grief of the younger man the older relives the agonies of his own youth, when he and his wife lost a series of children before bringing up Cratia as an only child.

Abstract: This paper discusses its author’s attempt to translate into English the verse drama Germanicus by the Afrikaans poet NP Van Wyk Louw, which is based on Tacitus’ Annales 1-3. After a general discussion of translation theory and of Louw’s theories relating to the classical tradition, the paper highlights, with examples, problems encountered on the levels of prosody, of register and of equivalence of meaning. Louw’s poetic Afrikaans is so concise that it requires an effort to be as brief in English. “Shakespearian English”, both lexis and wordorder, is closer to the Germanic Afrikaans, but would be unacceptable in a modern translation. Louw’s idiosyncratic use of Afrikaans, deliberate archaisms and occasional neologisms call for interpretative reading before these can be translated. The paper ends with a short reference to the place of Louw’s Germanicus in the international Classical tradition.

Abstract: The writer paints a picture of what Armistice Day, 11 November 1918 was like. Included are glimpses of the state in which the warring nations found themselves on this date, and the ways in which the restoration of peace was greeted in the various capitals. In conclusion, reference is made to the Armistice Day remembrance services which are conducted every year in most South African centres under the auspices of the MOTH organisation.
A challenge in enumerative combinatorics: The graph of contribution
J-M. Maillard
Mathematics , 2002,
Abstract: We will try to sketch Professor F. Y. Wu's contributions in lattice statistical mechanics, solid state physics, graph theory, enumerative combinatorics and so many other domains of physics and mathematics. We will recall F. Y. Wu's most important and well-known classic results and we will also sketch his most recent researches dedicated to the connections of lattice statistical mechanical models with deep problems in pure mathematics. Since it is hard to provide an exhaustive list of all his contributions, to give some representation of F. Y. Wu's "mental connectivity" we will concentrate on the interrelations between the various results he has obtained in so many different domains of physics and mathematics. Along the way we will also try to understand Wu's motivations and his favorite concepts, tools and ideas.
