Abstract: the extractivism of pequi fruits (caryocar brasiliense camb.) (caryocaraceae) is an important option of income, food and employment for the populations living in the savannah regions all over brazil. however, the natural supply of those fruit is endangered by a great deal of factors, among those stands out a serious pest, carmenta sp. (lepidoptera: sesiidae) making them unsuitable for consumption. the present study aimed to know some characteristics of the responsible insect as well as the way of attacking pequi fruits, damage caused and characteristic symptoms. this work was performed through the analysis of previously collected pequi fruits, both on the plant and soil in the type savannah vegetation in montes claros county, northern minas and itumirim, southern minas, in minas gerais state. in the former county were harvested fruits between 80 - 120 days after anthesis (daa), while in the last one in two times, 45 and 90 daa. in each county, collect time and site (plant or soil) were collected 50 fruits for analysis. the evaluated characteristics were: longitudinal and transversal diameter, percentage of damaged fruits, number of worm per fruit and number of chrysalides per fruit. after the analysis of those characteristics, the insect's developmental stages were recorded and documented photographycally as to length, coloration and morphology as well as attack symptoms. from this work, we can conclude that the pequi fruit lepidoborer can provoke damage to yield higher than 50 %, destroying all the inside of the fruits. the youngest fruits are the most attacked, being commom to find a single worm in its inside.
Outpatient vs. home-based pulmonary rehabilitation in COPD: a randomized controlled trial

Abstract: Patients who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were randomized into three distinct groups: an outpatient group who performed all activities at the clinic, a home-based group who performed the activities at home and a control group. PR consisted of a combination of aerobic exercises and strengthening of upper and lower limbs 3 times a week for 12 weeks. There was a significant difference in the distance covered on the six-minute walk test (p < 0.05) and BODE index (p < 0.001) in the outpatient and at-home groups after participating in the rehabilitation program compared to baseline.A home-based self-monitoring pulmonary rehabilitation program is as effective as outpatient pulmonary rehabilitation and is a valid alternative for the management of patients with COPD.Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common cause of illness and death that affects a large and increasing number of individuals in both developed and developing countries. Estimates suggest that COPD will become the 3rd most common cause of death in the world and 5th most common cause of illness in the next 20 years [1,2].Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) is a multidisciplinary intervention that integrates physical exercise, nutritional therapy, patient education and psychological support [3-7]. Evidence indicates that PR offers numerous clinical benefits, such as improved health-related quality of life, a reduction in anxiety and depression, increased tolerance to physical exercise and a reduction in the number of hospitalizations and days of hospital stay per year [3,4]. However, despite the strong scientific recommendations for its routine use in the treatment of COPD, PR is generally underutilized [5-7]. A survey carried out in 2005 in Canada demonstrated that only 1-2% of the Canadian population with COPD has access to rehabilitation programs [8]. Similar statistics are reported for other countries [7,9].A search of the scientific literature revealed few controlled studies that demonstrate the b

Estudos do CEPE , 2008,
Abstract This article examines the evolution of economic growth in Brazil, regarding divergence and convergence of the regional inequalities of the per capita income in the country between 1939 and 2006. Initially, it analyzes some theories about divergent and convergent economic growth. Later, it explores the evolution of the Brazilian economic growth, during the last decades, according to those theories. The analysis shows that, in the beginning of the period, there was a highly concentrated pattern of growth in the country, but, lately, it has turned into a scattered economic growth.

Iheringia. Série Zoologia , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0073-47212008000400015
Abstract: here we present data on the reproductive behavior of leptodactylus mystacinus (burmeister, 1861), including details on courtship behavior. we also describe and compared the courtship calls of l. mystacinus, l. furnarius sazima & bokermann, 1978 and leptodactylus sp. (l. aff. andreae). field works were conducted in uberlandia (central brazil). during courtship, a female approaches a calling male and is led to a previously excavated chamber; a female can approach a silent male that beat his hands and/or feet on the ground as well. the courtship call of l. mystacinus consists of one single arch-shaped note (duration = 0.04 s) repeated 258 times per minute; the courtship calls of l. furnarius (0.06 s, 84 times per minute) and leptodactylus sp. (0.15 s, 5 times per minute) also are arch-shaped. the courtship behavior of l. mystacinus is similar to that of other species of the l. fuscus (schneider, 1799) group; unique to it is that males can beat his hands and/or feet on the ground while courting. the male behavior of conducting the female to a previously excavates chamber and the arch-shaped courtship call may represent other shared derived features of members of the l. fuscus group, including the former adenomera species.

Abstract: eighteen wheat lines and two cultivars were evaluated in trial carried out under sprinkler irrigation, limed and fertilized soils, at the tatuí agronomy experimental station, state of s?o paulo, brazil during 1999 and 2000. grain yield, plant height, number of days from emergence to flowering, number of grains per spike, 100 grain weight, grain length, width and thickness were evaluated. simple correlations between these characteristics were estimated. the occurrence of frosts at grain filling period, in 2000, resulted in grain yield reduction in all genotypes, reduction in the number of grains per spike, and also in 100 grain weight for the majority of the genotypes. the highest genotypes showed a tendency to be less affected by the frosts. the genotype 9 (banacora t 88) exihibited short plants; the genotypes 2 (kauz*2/mnv//kauz), 9 and 14 (wh 542) presented high number of grains per spike and the genotype 3 (sawgai) high 100 grain weight, in the experiment seeded in 1999. these genotypes could be used as genetic sources in crossing programs, where these traits would be desired.
