Abstract: Background. Leishmaniases are diseases with a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations including cutaneous (CL) and visceral (VL) forms. Many factors may affect their occurrence and expansion including environmental, geographic, and social conditions. In the past two decades, Divinópolis, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, has exhibited the potential for a disease outbreak, with the appearance of CL, and VL cases (human and canine). Hence, this study was initiated to monitor public knowledge of the disease. Questionnaires were administered in four neighborhoods (Jardim Belvedere, Esplanada, Danilo Passos I and II) where most of the human and canine cases have been reported. The analyses demonstrated that public knowledge of the disease is sparse and fragmented. A strong perception of the dog as the main reservoir was observed. Five veterinary clinics were evaluated for the presence of canine VL using serological (RIFI and ELISA) and molecular (PCR-RFLP) techniques. This is the first study demonstrating the occurrence of Leishmania infantum in Divinópolis, suggesting a possible urbanization of VL. 1. Introduction Leishmaniases are a group of diseases caused by the protozoan Leishmania (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae) affecting 12 million people in 88 countries. The disease exhibits a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations ranging from benign cutaneous lesions (CL) to the fatal visceral form (VL) [1]. In Latin America, especially Brazil, both forms are widely distributed and are transmitted by the bite of phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) [2]. Wild and domestic reservoirs including foxes, marsupials, rodents, dogs, and cats are the main sources of sand fly infection [3–8]. Many factors may have contributed to VL and CL expansion and urbanization [9], including deforestation [10], human migration [11], vector adaptation [12, 13], drug resistance [14], poverty [15], and social conflicts [16]. As a result of anthropic modifications, VL has been increasingly reported in urban areas of major Brazilian cities including Natal, Teresina, Sobral, and Belo Horizonte [5, 17–20]. The city of Divinópolis, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, has a population of approximately 210,000. It has grown dramatically, with 90.5% of its territory completely urbanized in 2000 [21]. During the 1990s, 135 CL cases were detected by health authorities. Most of those cases were reported in the neighborhoods of Jardim Belvedere, Esplanada, S?o José, Catal?o, and Candelária, all in the vicinity of Mata do Noé forest, where a large area was deforested. More recently, another forest

Abstract: mammary glands are the most usual sites of tumors in bitches, representing 25 to 30% of all types of cancer. during cancer genesis, several genetic changes alter the expression of different proteins like cyr61, a peptide involved in cell proliferation and angiogenesis. this work aimed to determine through immunohistochemistry the expression profile of cyr61 in normal and neoplastic mammary glands from bitches. so, 10 cases of each diagnose were selected: simple adenoma, complex carcinoma, simple solid carcinoma and fragments of normal mammary glands, in a total of 40 cases. sections were subjected to immunohistochemistry, employing primary antibodies directed cyr61. cyr61 labeling of normal mammary epithelial cells is probably linked to its role in apoptosis and cellular proliferation. the labeling was more intense in normal and adenoma fragments and was discrete in the labeling malignant tumor sections, a different feature of expression from previously reports in human breast cancer. immunohistochemical analysis with polyclonal antibody cyr61 demonstrated the constitutive expression of the protein and contributed to neoplastic research alternative for tumors in bitches.

Abstract: among the surgical problems in birds, the fractures are the most prevalent. due to variations in size, weight, peculiar bone anatomy, high incidence of complicated fractures and functional demands of different species and individuals, it is still not possible to establish an ideal method for osteosynthesis of long bones in birds. titanium microplates commonly used in human maxillofacial surgery have been recently employed in osteosynthesis of birds, but with few results available. the aim of this study was to evaluate the use of titanium microplates in the treatment of tibiotarsus fractures in 30 pigeons (columba livia) , adult males and females, with 7 months old, weighing from 400 to 500. the animals were divided into 3 groups with ten animals each. in group 1, a titanium microplate with 6 holes and a central spacer was used; in group 2, a titanium microplate with 8 holes without a spacer in the center was used; in group 3, a titanium microplate with 8 holes with central spacer was used. after clinical evaluation, the birds were submitted to mid-diaphyseal osteotomy in the right bone for placement of different configurations of the titanium plate, and fixed with titanium microscrews 7mm long. the animals were evaluated clinically and radiographically until 90 days postoperatively. after this period, euthanasia was performed in 2 animals from each group. in all animals was observed bone healing and in group 1 the mean and standard deviation were 32.9±9.9 days, in group 2, 30.8±6.7 days in group 3, 26.6±6.4 days. there was no statistical difference in healing time between groups. the bending of the implant was the most common complication. the configuration of the plate resulted in a statistically significant difference in relation to walking and to the degree of bending in the different groups. moreover, in group 3 there was higher precocity in the member suppor and a lower degree of bending in relation to other groups. histologically, it was verified formation of

Abstract: termites are well -known for their capacity to damage and destroy wood and wood products of all kinds in the tropics and subtropics. a field test was undertaken to evaluate variations in wood consumption of pinus sp. and three species of eucalyptus by subterranean termites. the test consisted of wooden stakes of each species being initially submitted to water immersion for 0, 24, 48 and 72 h, and buried in the ground to natural infestation by subterranean termites for an exposure period of 30, 45 and 60 days. three species of subterranean termites were identified: heterotermes longiceps (snyder), coptotermes gestroi (wasmann) (isoptera: rhinotermitidae), and nasutitermes jaraguae (holmgren) (isoptera: termitidae). this is the first record of occurrence of h. longiceps in the state of rio de janeiro. although the wood-consumption rates were not correlated significantly with their wood densities, there was a tendency of the softwoods (e. robusta and pinus sp.) to be more consumed by subterranean termites than the woods of intermediate hardness (e. pellita and e. urophylla). among the eucalyptus, e. robusta showed to be more susceptible to attack by subterranean termites than e. pellita and e. urophylla

Abstract: background and objectives: chronic pain results in an increased response of spinal cord dorsal horn neurons due to the action of several mediators released by neuronal terminals, including the agonists of n-methyl-d-aspartate receptors. in addition to sensory ascending pathways, inhibitory descending pathways modulate pain, including a2-adrenoceptors located on primary afferent terminals and on the spinal cord. this study was designed to investigate the anti-noxious effects of epidural ketamine (n-methyl-d-aspartate antagonist) or epidural clonidine (a2-adrenergic agonist) in the treatment of neuropathic chronic pain. methods: twenty-six adult patients, with neuropathic chronic pain not responsive to conservative therapy, were randomly divided into two groups in this prospective double-blind study. all patients were regularly taking 50-75 mg oral amitriptyline at bedtime. pain was evaluated through a 10 cm visual analog scale (vas), with “zero” corresponding to “no pain” and 10 to “the worst possible pain”. a lumbar epidural catheter was inserted and test drugs were administered at 8 hour-intervals during 3 weeks. the ketamine group (kg) was given each time 1 mg.kg-1 preservative-free ketamine followed by 30 mg of 1% lidocaine. the clonidine group (clo g) was given 30 μg preservative-free clonidine followed by 30 mg of 1% lidocaine (3 ml). results: twenty-three patients were evaluated (kg-n=10; clo g-n=13). epidural administration of ketamine or clonidine in the proposed doses resulted in analgesia during epidural catheter maintenance (initial vas 8-10 cm versus final vas 0-3 cm) (p < 0.002). vas scores remained maintained between 0 and 3 cm from 2 to 5 weeks following epidural catheter removal. conclusions: epidural ketamine or clonidine resulted in analgesia for neuropathic chronic pain refractory to conservative treatment and are effective alternatives when conventional treatment fails.
