Abstract: there are many types of dry cured hams with particular sensorial profiles resulting from different raw materials and processing techniques, which are appreciated by their characteristic flavors and textures. the objectives of this paper are to characterize the sensorial profile of dry cured hams through a quantitative descriptive analysis, and to verify the products acceptance by the consumer. two experimental dry cured hams, produced through fast processing (called ctc 3.5% and 5.0% due the initial added salt content), and four products commercialized in brazil,: a spanish serrano, an italian one, and two brazilian ones (serrano type and parma type) were evaluated. the products differed in terms of the following attributes: ctc 3.5% - the most acid flavored and the lowest intensity of rancid aroma and flavor, redness and juiciness; ctc 5.0% - the highest fibrousness and the lowest intensity and persistence of flavor, and tenderness; serrano - the highest rancid aroma, redness, intensity and persistence of flavor and the lowest salty flavor; serrano type - the highest rancid flavor and the lowest sweet flavor; italian - the highest salty flavor and tenderness; parma type - the most intense meat flavor, marbling and fat yellowness. all the products were accepted well by the consumer. the serrano type was the most accepted and serrano was the lowest accepted by the brazilian consumers. the ctc products were considered to be good quality, presenting typical characteristics of a dry cured ham, despite the short maturation period.

Abstract:

The species Piper aduncum is a plant with great economic potential, because the essential oil has antimicrobial activity and insecticides. Thus, as the light directly affects photosynthesis process, the present study evaluated the gas exchanges variables and photosynthetic pigments production of P. aduncum grown under different irradiances. Treatments consisted in environments with 100%, 70% and 50% of irradiance and environments with colored nets (red and blue). Abstract: this study was conducted with the objetives of determing the rate of macronutrient absorption considering the following items: . periods of greatest need for macronutrient nutrition; . amount of macronutrients accumulated in the different parts of the plant; . amount of macronutrients exported in seeds. a 33 factorial experiment with three replications was used in this study. the experimental area was located at piracicaba, sp, brazil. the soil belongs to the guamium series. iac-2, an indeterminate soybean cultivar, was used. n, p and k were applied in the rows at the levels of 0, 20 and 40 kg/ha (n), 0, 60 and 120 kg/ha (p2o5), and 0, 30 and 60 kg/ha (k2o). plant samples were taken at 21-day intervals starting at emergence and continuing until partial fall of the leaves (105 days after emergence). the several plants were analysed for macronutrients (n, p, k, ca, mg and s). at maturity, seeds from each plant were harvested and analysed for macronutrients. the following conclusions were drawn: . the period of highest rate of absorption of the nutrients by leaves and stems occurred between 44 and 55 days of age for the leaves, and between 55 and 76 days for stems. the amounts of nutrients removed, with exception of n and mg, were affected by the levels of phosphorus applied to the soil; with exception of n and mg, the nutrient contents varied according to plant parts; . the accumulation of n, p, k and mg in the soybean seeds was influenced only by the levels of phosphorus applied to the soil. the accumulation of ca and s in the seeds was not affected by the levels of n, p, and k. the removal of nutrients through harvest was influenced only by the effects of the treatments on yield of seeds.

Plasma Diagnostic and Performance of a Permanent Magnet Hall Thruster

Abstract: Electric propulsion is now a sucessfull method for primary propulsion of deep space long duration missions and for geosyncronous satellite attitude control. Closed Drift Plasma Thruster, so called Hall Thruster or SPT (stationary plasma thruster) were primarily conceived in USSR (the ancient Soviet Union) and now it is been developed by space agencies, space research institutes and industries in several countries such as France, USA, Israel, Russian Federation and Brazil. In this work, we show plasma characteristics and performance of a Hall Thruster designed with an innovative concept which uses an array of permanent magnets, instead of an eletromagnet, to produce a radial magnetic field inside its cylindrical plasma drift channel. Within this new concept, we expect to develop a Hall Thruster within power consuption that will scale up to small and medium size satellites. A plasma density and temperature space profiles inside and outside the thruster channel will be shown. Space plasma potential, ion temperature measurements based on doppler broadenning of spectral lines and ion energy measurements are shown for different plasma production regimes. Experimentaly measured propulsion and power consumption will also be shown and compared with computational simulation models using the same plasma experimental conditions. In both cases the results are showing a thrust range between 40mN to 80mN which is close to the thrust levels obtained with a commercial SPT 100 using 30% less electrical power.

Abstract: the present study was conducted with the objective of evaluating the influence of frequency of roughage and supplement supply and/or animal category on the ingestive behavior of cattle. sixteen heifers and sixteen cows, with average initial age of 20 and 66 months and average initial weight of 338 and 432 kg, respectively, were used. treatments were represented by the frequencies of roughage and concentrate supply: 2 r/c - roughage and concentrate two times per day; 1 r/c - roughage and concentrate one time per day; 1 r/2c - roughage one time per day and concentrate two times per day; 1 r/3 c - roughage one time per day and concentrate three times per day, offered to cows and heifers. diet was composed of 60% maize silage and 40% concentrate, on a dry matter basis (dm). the complete randomized experimental design was used, with a 4 × 2 factorial arrangement (frequencies × category). the data were submitted to variance analysis and averages were compared by "t" test. the interaction between supply frequencies and animal category was significant for rumination and idle times, efficiencies of dry matter rumination and of neutral detergent fiber rumination, number of ruminated bolus and daily time of chew. heifers showed longer idle periods and daily time of chew when compared with cows that received food once in a day. duration of feed intake did not vary with frequencies. cows showed longer period of feed intake and ingestive rate in relation to heifers (4.38 vs. 4.09 hours and 2.91 vs. 2.35 kg of dm/hour of intake, respectively). the increase in food frequency stimulated animals to intensify feed intake at the moment of supply.

Abstract: lameness related to arthropathies are common and so very important to equine veterinary medicine, considering that almost 33% of all lamenesses are due to arthropathies. the present experiment aimed the evaluation of synovial fluid estability after cooling and freezing and its possible therapeutical utilization. samples of synovial fluid were taken from 25 equines, from both intertarsus proximall joints by arthrocentesis. samples from each animal were mixed and then divided into 3 aliquotes, and analysed fresh (gi), after cooling (gii) and after freezing (giii). the protein evaluation showed significant difference between gi and gii and ii and iii, but gi and giii were statistically similar. leukocytes counting showed gi and gii, and gi and giii to be statistically different, but no difference was seen between gii and giii. lymphocyte was the predominant cell in 96% of the cases. morphological abnormalities in 8% of the leukocytes of animals in gii and in 64% of those in giii were found. mucin clot showed no difference betwen all groups studied. based on the results, it was possible to conclude that the synovial fluid has different protein and cellularity values after cooling and freezing, but is still in the normal range.
