Abstract: immunoprophylaxis is the choice strategy for the prevention and control of meningococcal meningitis epidemics caused by neisseria meningitidis serogroup a in the so-called meningitis belt of africa, a disease that reaches high rates of morbidity and mortality. the lyophilized purified polysaccharide vaccine from neisseria meningitidis serogroups a and c was produced as a result of a collaboration agreement between finlay institute, center for research, development and production of vaccines, cuba and the institute of technology and bio-immunobiologicals manguinhos of brazil, at the request of the world health organization to meet the needs of the vaccine in african countries in health emergencies. in the vaccination campaign carried out during an outbreak in niger in 2009, a study of pharmacovigilance was conducted to describe the adverse events following the administration of this product to 303 037 people. two methods were used to collect adverse events (spontaneous reporting and intensive search in hospitals). a total of 81 adverse events were reported, only 11% were under the category ?induced by the vaccine? and considered ?very probably related? to this. the results show that the vaccine used in the immunization campaign in niger is safe, has low reactogenicity and their safety profile corresponds to that described in the sanitary medical registry in brazil.

Abstract: in order to describe the temporally associated adverse events after the use of va-mengoc-bc? a descriptive and observational study was done. the universe was 3549 children of three months of age and 3832 children of five months of age from primary health care centers of la lisa municipality. there were 3.21% of children with adverse events in general, but the frequency was higher after the first dose without noticeable differences between sex. the 52% of those adverse events were systemic, 19% on the site of administration of the vaccine and 29% were no related to the vaccine. most of children were affected in the first 72 hours after the vaccination, and the clinical manifestations disappeared before 72 hours since its beginning. the more frequent manifestations were fever: (the main adverse event with 1.53 cases per 100 vaccinated children); hardness (0.31 cases per 100 vaccinated children), redness (0.30 cases per 100 vaccinated children) and pain (0.136 cases per 100 vaccinated children) on the site of vaccination, irritation (0.244 cases per 100 vaccinated children) and appetite lost (0.311 cases per 100 vaccinated children). the main unrelated adverse events were acute respiratory disease (0.637 cases per 100 vaccinated children), acute diarrhea disease (0.311 cases per 100 vaccinated children) and acute middle ear infection (0.176 cases per 100 vaccinated children). serious adverse events were scarce. there were not deaths, and all the hospitalized cases were discharged within ten days in complete recuperation without sequel, incapability or handicap.
A Curious Source of Extended X-ray Emission in the Outskirts of Globular Cluster GLIMPSE-C01
N. Mirabal
Physics , 2009, DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2966.2009.15984.x
Abstract: We report the discovery of an unusual source of extended X-ray emission CXOU J184846.3-013040 (`The Stem') located on the outskirts of the globular cluster GLIMPSE-C01. No point-like source falls within the extended emission which has an X-ray luminosity L_X =10^{32} ergs/s and a physical size of 0.1 pc at the inferred distance to the cluster. These X-ray properties are consistent with the pulsar wind nebula (PWN) of an unseen pulsar located within the 95-percent confidence error contour of unidentified Fermi gamma-ray source 0FGL J1848.6-0138. However, we cannot exclude an alternative interpretation that postulates X-ray emission associated with a bow shock produced from the interaction of the globular cluster and interstellar gas in the Galactic plane. Analysis of the X-ray data reveals that `The Stem' is most significant in the 2-5 keV band, which suggests that the emission may be dominated by non-thermal bremsstrahlung from suprathermal electrons at the bow shock. If the bow shock interpretation is correct, these observations would provide compelling evidence that GLIMPSE-C01 is shedding its intracluster gas during a galactic passage. Such a direct detection of gas stripping would help clarify a crucial step in the evolutionary history of globular clusters. Intriguingly, the data may also accommodate a new type of X-ray source.
A Point-Source Catalog from Swift Observations of Unidentified Fermi Sources
N. Mirabal
Physics , 2009,
Abstract: We present X-ray point source catalogs obtained from archival Swift observations that have partially or fully covered the 95% confidence error contour of unidentified Fermi sources. In total, 21 out of 37 unidentified Fermi sources have been observed by the X-Ray Telescope (XRT) on board the Swift observatory. Basic properties such as position, positional errors, count rates, and hardness ratios are derived for a total of 18 X-ray point sources found in the sample. From these detections, we discuss potential counterparts to 0FGL J0910.2-5044, 0FGL J1045.6-5937, 0FGL J1115.8-6108, 0FGL J1231.5-1410, 0FGL J1326.6-5302, 0FGL J1604.0-4904, and 0FGL J1805.3-2138. The catalog will assist observers planning future programs to identify 0FGL sources without obvious counterparts.
Dark matter vs. Pulsars: Catching the impostor
N. Mirabal
Physics , 2013, DOI: 10.1093/mnras/stt1740
Abstract: Evidence of excess GeV emission nearly coinciding with the Galactic Centre has been interpreted as a possible signature of annihilating dark matter. In this paper, we argue that it seems too early to discard pulsars as a viable explanation for the observed excess. On the heels of the recently released Second Fermi LAT Pulsar Catalogue (2FPC), it is still possible that a population of hard (Gamma < 1) millisecond pulsars (MSPs) either endemic to the innermost region or part of a larger nascent collection of hard MSPs that appears to be emerging in the 2FPC could explain the GeV excess near the Galactic Centre.
