Financial Risk Measurement for Turkish Insurance Companies Using VaR Models  [PDF]

Abstract: This study aims to measure the foreign exchange risks that the insurance companies are exposed to. In this context, this study analyzes 7 insurance companies listed in Borsa Istanbul (Istanbul Stock Exchange). The foreign exchange risks that the insurance companies are exposed to were measured using VaR models, Historical Simulation and Monte Carlo Simulation methods. Data obtained from the analysis show the losses that the insurance companies suffer due to exchange risk. The losses calculated using the Monte Carlo Simulation were found to be greater than the losses calculated using Historical Simulation.
Relationship Between Seed Vigour and Suboptimal Temperature-salt Tolerance in Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.)

Abstract: In pepper, high seed vigour is a precondition for rapid and homogenous field emergence. In this study the non-standard germination conditions (suboptimal temperature and salt stress) were evaluated for their possible use as a vigour test in pepper. 11 pepper cultivars grown widely in Turkey were germinated at solutions containing 0, 85, 170 and 215 mM NaCl (salt stress) for 14 days in 20°C. Seeds of 11 pepper cultivars were also germinated at 14°C (suboptimal temperature). Germination percentage and germination rate were determined during the germination. Germination percentage and germination rate were decreased with the increasing NaCl concentrations and in 14°C compared to the control conditions. Field studies were conducted to determine seed vigour during emergence. Seed vigour was defined as field emergence percentage (FEP). Lower vigour was related to lower field emergence rates of seed samples. Significant positive correlations were determined between FEP and germination percentage and germination rate values under suboptimal temperature and salt stress. The results support the possibility to use suboptimal temperature and salt stresss during germination to determine pepper seed vigour.
The Use of PSA Doubling Time to Predict Prognosis and the Use of PSA Response to Assess the Success for Prostate Cancer Patients Undergoing Docetaxel Chemotherapy  [PDF]

Abstract: In the targeted therapy era, it is critical to know the certain points to start or discontinue chemotherapy for patients with castration resistant metastatic prostate cancer. The prognostic factors to determine this response are still not clear yet. We tried to find out if the PSA doubling time helps us to predict the patients who will benefit from docetaxel chemotherapy most, and also to question the value of the PSA response to chemotherapy. Retrospectively, 70 patients who had hormone refractory metastatic prostate cancer that were given at least 4 cycles of docetaxel chemotherapy between 2002 and 2015 were evaluated. After the onset of docetaxel, PSA response to therapy and overall survival rates were analyzed to figure out if these parameters were related to PSA doubling time. The only statistically significant prognostic parameter affecting overall survival was the best PSA response rate to docetaxel chemotherapy being over or under 50%. The most significant parameter that affects the PSA doubling time was the clinical stage at the time of diagnosis. PSA doubling time is not a useful predictive tool for predicting response to docetaxel. By means of overall survival, the clinical stage at the time of diagnosis was the best predictive tool for our cohort. The best PSA response rate to docetaxel chemotherapy was found to be a valuable parameter. The study being retrospective and the low number of patients included in this cohort can be the main weaknesses of this study. Further studies to determine which other factors can be useful are needed.
The effect of vitamin C and cobalt supplementation on antioxidant status in healthy and diabetic rats

Abstract: In the present study, liver, lung, heart and kidney superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT) activities, lipid peroxidation, nitrite and vitamin C levels were investigated in diabetic rats. Diabetes induced in rats by streptozotocin (STZ) and the treated rats were received 1 g/l vitamin C with 0.5 mM CoCl2 in drinking water for eigth weeks. In all tissues, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, catalase activities, lipid peroxidation and nitrite levels were significantly increased in diabetic rats at the end of 8th week (p < 0.05) whereas vitamin C level was decreased compared to those of controls. Cobalt with vitamin C treatment of diabetic rats resulted in partial restoration of SOD and CAT activities, thiobarbituric acid reactant substances (TBARS), vitamin C and nitrite levels at all times studied, whereas treatment did not significantly change GSH-Px activity compared to diabetics. These results suggest that cobalt with vitamin C, effectively but could not completely restore the altered endogenous defense systems in diabetic rat liver, lung, heart and kidney tissues.

In this paper, the homoto pyanalysis method (HAM) is presented to solve some of engineering problems. The homotopy analysis method is applied in obtaining exact solutions for equations of the type?Δ2=b(x,y) and ?Δ2u=b(x,y,u)on an elliptical domain. Exact solutions are presented for several examples involving to demon strate the applic ability and efficiency of HAM.

High mobility group box protein-1 (HMGB-1) as a new diagnostic marker in patients with acute appendicitis

Abstract: Our study was carried out from October 2010 through November 2010 and included 20 healthy control group participants and 60 patients who presented at the emergency department of Erzurum Training and Research Hospital in Turkey with acute abdominal pain complaints, who were pathologically diagnosed with AA after laparotomy, and who agreed to participate in the study.Of the 60 patients who underwent appendectomies, 36 were male and 24 were female, and of the healthy group, 12 were male and 8 female. The age averages of the patients in Groups 1, 2 and 3 were, respectively, 31.3+15.4, 34.0+16.3 and 31.0+13.1 years. The WBC averages of Groups 1, 2 and 3 were, respectively, 7.41+2.02 (x109/L), 15.71+2.85 (x109/L) and 8.51+1.84 (x109/L). The HMGB-1 levels for Groups 1 (healthy persons), 2 (AA patients with high WBC counts ) and 3 (AA patients with normal WBC counts) were, respectively, 21.71 ± 11.36, 37.28+13.37 and 36.5 ± 17.73 ng/ml. The average HMGB-1 level of the patients with AA was 36.92 ± 15.43 ng/ml while the average HMGB-1 value of the healthy group was 21.71 ± 11.36 ng/ml.The significantly higher levels of HMGB-1 in AA patients compared to healthy persons infer that HMGB-1 might be useful in the diagnosis of AA. Abstract: objectives: this study investigated the serum 25-hydroxyvitamin d levels of patients with behcet's disease. design and methods: thirty-two patients with behcet's disease and 31 matched healthy controls were enrolled in this study. the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (esr) and the levels of c-reactive protein (crp), serum 25-hydroxyvitamin d, calcium (ca), phosphate (p), and total alkaline phosphatase (alp) were measured in both groups. results: there were no significant differences between the two groups regarding demographic data. the serum 25-hydroxyvitamin d levels of patients and controls were 13.76 (range: 4.00-35.79) and 18.97 (range: 12.05-36.94) ng/ml, respectively. in patients with behcet's disease, 25-hydroxyvitamin d values were significantly lower than those of the healthy controls (p<0.001). serum ca, p, and alp levels were similar in both groups. serum esr and crp levels were significantly higher in patients than controls (p<0.05). there was no correlation between 25-hydroxyvitamin d levels and age, body mass index (bmi), disease duration, esr, or crp levels. multivariate regression analysis parameters showed that smoking, alcohol intake, and use of colchicine were the main predictors of 25-hydroxyvitamin d levels. of the parameters studied, the largest impact was due to colchicine therapy (p<0.001). we did not find a significant relationship between the use of corticosteroids and 25-hydroxyvitamin d levels. conclusion: our results suggest that serum 25-hydroxyvitamin d levels are decreased in patients with behcet's disease. smoking, alcohol intake, and use of colchicine appear to affect vitamin d levels.

Abstract: Cisplatin (CDDP) is one of the most active cytotoxic agents in the treatment of cancer and has adverse side effects such as nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity. The present study was designed to determine the effects of royal jelly (RJ) against oxidative stress caused by CDDP injury of the kidneys and liver, by measuring tissue biochemical and antioxidant parameters and investigating apoptosis immunohistochemically. Twenty-four Sprague Dawley rats were divided into four groups, group C: control group received 0.9% saline; group CDDP: injected i.p. with cisplatin (CDDP, 7?mg?kg?1 body weight i.p., single dose); group RJ: treated for 15 consecutive days by gavage with RJ (300?mg/kg/day); group RJ + CDDP: treated by gavage with RJ 15 days following a single injection of CDDP. Malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) levels, glutathione S-transferase (GST), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities were determined in liver and kidney homogenates, and the liver and kidney were also histologically examined. RJ elicited a significant protective effect towards liver and kidney by decreasing the level of lipid peroxidation (MDA), elevating the level of GSH, and increasing the activities of GST, GSH-Px, and SOD. In the immunohistochemical examinations were observed significantly enhanced apoptotic cell numbers and degenerative changes by cisplatin, but these histological changes were lower in the liver and kidney tissues of RJ + CDDP group. Besides, treatment with RJ lead to an increase in antiapoptotic activity hepatocytes and tubular epithelium. In conclusion, RJ may be used in combination with cisplatin in chemotherapy to improve cisplatin-induced oxidative stress parameters and apoptotic activity. 1.
