Drosophila TIEG Is a Modulator of Different Signalling Pathways Involved in Wing Patterning and Cell Proliferation

Abstract: Acquisition of a final shape and size during organ development requires a regulated program of growth and patterning controlled by a complex genetic network of signalling molecules that must be coordinated to provide positional information to each cell within the corresponding organ or tissue. The mechanism by which all these signals are coordinated to yield a final response is not well understood. Here, I have characterized the Drosophila ortholog of the human TGF-β Inducible Early Gene 1 (dTIEG). TIEG are zinc-finger proteins that belong to the Krüppel-like factor (KLF) family and were initially identified in human osteoblasts and pancreatic tumor cells for the ability to enhance TGF-β response. Using the developing wing of Drosophila as “in vivo” model, the dTIEG function has been studied in the control of cell proliferation and patterning. These results show that dTIEG can modulate Dpp signalling. Furthermore, dTIEG also regulates the activity of JAK/STAT pathway suggesting a conserved role of TIEG proteins as positive regulators of TGF-β signalling and as mediators of the crosstalk between signalling pathways acting in a same cellular context.

El modelo actual de ciudad fronteriza mexicana. Urbanismos yuxtapuestos y herméticos

Abstract: Diversos modelos urbanísticos confluyen en la frontera México-Estados Unidos. El modelo fronterizo tiende a configurarse y diferenciarse como un híbrido cultural complejo a partir de los dos modelos nacionales. Partiendo de la hipótesis de que estas ciudades están marcadas por el efecto de frontera, exploramos los rasgos que advierten la posible emergencia de este modelo peculiar. La abrupta separación territorial jurídica es permeable a los flujos socioeconómicos y aún demográficos, pero también a nuevas formas de control disciplinario sobre el territorio expresadas en la proliferación de barreras físicas en el interior del tejido urbano. El proyecto de ciudad en construcción privilegia del lado mexicano el urbanismo defensivo, que abordamos en el entorno construido como recurso de identidad. Los nuevos consumos de espacio físico en la ciudad enfatizan el aspecto lúdico de los innumerables segmentos materiales que la integran, emergiendo cada uno a la manera de atractivo consumible autónomo. El escenario resultante tiende entonces a constituirse en su totalidad con bienes adquiribles, donde los promotores inmobiliarios ofertan la vivienda –el espacio de consumo por excelencia- validos de técnicas de marketing inductoras del encuentro feliz del residente con el hábitat acorde a los más caros valores de su identidad, y por lo mismo, vueltos imprescindibles. El espacio ha de consumirse tras la cualificación material, el tratamiento simbólico y el acotamiento parcelario derivado de capacidades adquisitivas y expectativas de estilo de vida, una identidad prefabricada.

Modeling Adoption and Usage of Competing Products

Abstract: The emergence and wide-spread use of online social networks has led to a dramatic increase on the availability of social activity data. Importantly, this data can be exploited to investigate, at a microscopic level, some of the problems that have captured the attention of economists, marketers and sociologists for decades, such as, e.g., product adoption, usage and competition. In this paper, we propose a continuous-time probabilistic model, based on temporal point processes, for the adoption and frequency of use of competing products, where the frequency of use of one product can be modulated by those of others. This model allows us to efficiently simulate the adoption and recurrent usages of competing products, and generate traces in which we can easily recognize the effect of social influence, recency and competition. We then develop an inference method to efficiently fit the model parameters by solving a convex program. The problem decouples into a collection of smaller subproblems, thus scaling easily to networks with hundred of thousands of nodes. We validate our model over synthetic and real diffusion data gathered from Twitter, and show that the proposed model does not only provides a good fit to the data and more accurate predictions than alternatives but also provides interpretable model parameters, which allow us to gain insights into some of the factors driving product adoption and frequency of use.

Abstract:

Introduction: The incidence of ocular metastasis from Breast Carcinoma is only between 5% - 30%, mainly located in choroid, but the location in optic nerve is even more infrequent. We present a rare case that combined both locations sequentially in the same eye. Methods: Case report. Results: A 58-year-old woman with advanced breast cancer was referred with a choroidal metastasis in her right eye which responded well to systemic Taxol and Avastin. Afterwards, she developed an optic nerve metastasis in the same eye when she was under the treatment, so it was changed to Docetaxel. Unfortunately the patient didn’t respond to this treatment and died. Conclusions: Choroidal metastasis secondary to breast cancer generally responds well to radiotherapy. Even so, in cases that a great deterioration of visual acuity is expected after radiation, chemotherapy like taxanes is an alternative to preserve vision with complete tumor regression. Nevertheless, the presentation of a second metastasis in optic nerve can be indicative of inadequate treatment of metastatic disease or complication of the treatment, or both.

Solitary colonic polypoid ganglioneuroma

Abstract: The hereditary syndromes of the gastrointestinal tract are classified as adenomatous or hamartomatous [1]. As a part of the hamartomatous polyposes, ganglioneuroma (GN) of the gastrointestinal tract are rare tumors composed of ganglion cells, nerve fibers, and supporting cells of the enteric nervous system [1,2]. There are few reports in the literature. We present a case of polypoid GN and melanosis coli. To our knowledge this is the first case reported in literature with this association.A 48-year old woman with arthrosis underwent colonoscopy because of a family history of colon cancer (father and cousin) and an episode of lower intestinal bleeding. The patient was an anthracene-type laxatives ("sacred rind") consumer due to usual constipation. No other symptoms were related. She and her family had no known history of multiple endrocrine neoplasia or neurofibromatosis. The laboratory tests were within the normal limits, including carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). Physical examination revealed an anal fissure. No pigmented skin lesions were identified. The colonoscopy revealed a millimetric sessile polyp in the sigmoid colon that was removed with biopsy forceps (Figure 1).The biopsy specimen consisted of three fragments. At low magnification they looked like a hyperplastic polyp. Microscopic examination of the fragments of the polyp showed a collection of nerve ganglion and stromal cells in the lamina propia that elevated the overlying elongated glands in a nodular configuration. No significant disarray of the mucosal architecture was observed. An additional finding of diffuse melanosis coli was noticed (Figure 2). Inmunohistochemical studies were performed. Abstract: the melon thrips (thrips palmi) have become a very significant pest of snap beans, beans, eggplants and cucumbers, and other crops, since they were first reported in colombia. the response of farmers to this problem has been the excessive pesticide use. with the aim of monitoring changes on the susceptibility of thrips populations to certain insecticides that are still effective, the line base data, lc50and lc90 values and diagnostic doses for imidacloprid, spinosad and carbosulfan were established. we used an adult population of a susceptible strain of t. palmi maintained at ciat since 1997. imidacloprid was evaluated as a systemic pesticide by immersing leaves with petioles in insecticide solutions. disks of foliage treated in this fashion were placed on agar in petri dishes. spinosad and carbosulfan were evaluated as contact pesticides using the foliage dipping technique. disks of the treated foliage were placed on petri dishes with agar. the diagnostic doses were 1.000 ppm (imidacloprid), 2.000 ppm (spinosad) and 2.000 ppm (carbosulfan). these doses were used for field monitoring of resistance in five zones of the cauca valley where heavy use of pesticides for the control of t. palmi occurs. no evidence of resistance to any of the evaluated pesticides was found. nevertheless, we recommended the performance of periodic monitoring in order to detect changes in resistance of the thrips over time.

Abstract: El trips del melon, Thrips palmi Karny, ha alcanzado gran importancia economica en habichuela, frijol, berenjena y pepino, entre otros cultivos, desde que se registro su presencia en Colombia, lo cual ha desencadenado el uso indiscriminado de insecticidas para su manejo. Con el fin de medir periodicamente los cambios en la susceptibilidad del insecto a algunos productos eficientes para su control, se establecieron las lineas base, los valores CL50 y CL90y las dosis diagnostico para imidacloprid, spinosad y carbosulfan sobre adultos de una poblacion de T. palmi susceptible mantenida en CIAT desde 1997. El imidacloprid se evaluo como insecticida sistemico por inmersion de hojas con peciolos en las soluciones del insecticida y colocacion del follaje, asi tratado, en cajas de petri con agar. Los insecticidas spinosad y carbosulfan se evaluaron como insecticidas de contacto usando la tecnica de inmersion de follaje. Los discos de follaje tratados se colocaron en cajas de petri con agar. Las dosis diagnostico fueron 1.000 ppm (imidacloprid), 2.000 ppm (spinosad) y 2.000 ppm (carbosulfan). Estas se usaron para medir periodicamente la resistencia a insecticidas en campo en cinco zonas del Valle del Cauca caracterizadas por excesivo uso de plaguicidas para el control de T. palmi. No se encontraron evidencias de resistencia a los insecticidas evaluados. Sin embargo, se recomienda realizar las mediciones periodicamente para detectar cambios de la resistencia en el tiempo.
