Educación y Educadores , 2006,
Abstract: the teaching strategies for the development of "human environment" and civic competencies were introduced and implemented via a series of educational workshops. they represent the end result of a classroom research process. the strategies were planned within the framework of the social pedagogy outlines contained in the master of education program at the university of la sabana, colombia. this paper presents a focus on "human environment" as a big conceptual category that may be used to develop environmental behaviours and civic competencies at different levels (in each person, the family, the school institution, the local community and the world). these behaviours and competencies should help to improve levels of civic participation and social skills, enhancing the overall quality of life and, most especially, with regards to the idea of personal improvement when seen as an expression of human liberty. in summary, this paper describes the planning, development and follow-up process that involved eleven educational workshops, all of which dealt with the field of "human environment." the workshops were designed from conceptual elements whose aim was to sensitize both teachers and students regarding the need for personal and family growth and the inherent value of living within society, its institutions and educational communities at local and national levels.

Abstract: adherence to treatment is currently of main concern for hiv/aids control, being associated with treatment success or failure. this systematic review highlights that adherence to treatment is a concept that traditionally refers only to antiretroviral medication intake and attendance at medical appointments. however, these aspects do not reflect the complexity of this topic. there is evidence about the relation between adherence to treatment and other factors that could facilitate or hinder its effectiveness but usually this evidence is not conclusive. in this review, an integral concept of adherence to treatment for hiv/aids infection is proposed, considering several simple and complex competences necessary to carry out the therapeutic regime. additionally, factors with stronger empirical support associated with adherence are identified, including those related to the patient, the health system, the illness and the treatment, as well as social-interpersonal and cultural factors. the aim of this review is to propose new guidelines to evaluate adherence to treatment for hiv/aids infection and factors that are associated to it, in order to allow the design of more effective interventions.

Iatreia , 2009,
Abstract: despite vaccination campaigns around the world and the resolution of the disease in immunocompetent adults, it is estimated that 400 million people worldwide are chronically infected with the hepatitis b virus (hbv). the prevalence rate of this disease in the colombian population is low, though variable among regions: only 2% are positive in tests for the surface antigen of this virus (hbsag). carriers of hbv have a higher risk of developing chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis (hc), liver failure and hepatocellular carcinoma (hcc). the aims of treatment for chronic hbv infection are to completely control viral replication and to induce remission of liver damage before hc or hcc may develop. nowadays, pharmacological therapy of hbv infection is done, among others, with pegylated interferon alfa 2a, lamivudine, adefovir, and entecavir. patients with acute hepatitis do not need to be treated, those with acute liver failure should be evaluated for transplantation, and therapy for chronic infection should be chosen according to the degree of severity and the characteristics of their disease. patients with acute hbv infection should be monitored every 1 to 3 months in order to detect the progression toward chronic hepatitis; for that purpose the levels of aminotransferases, bilirubin, prothrombin time, serum albumin, α-fetoprotein and hbv dna are determined, and platelet count, liver biopsy, abdominal ultrasonography and upper digestive endoscopy are carried out. in patients being treated with alfa 2a pegylated interferon hbeag, anti-hbe and hbv dna must be measured every 6 months. these measurements should be made every 3 to 6 months in patients who use lamivudine, adefovir, entecavir or other antivirals. other drugs with immunomodulatory or antiviral properties are being studied. the new antiviral agents include: emtricitabine, clevudine, tenofovir, telmivudine and β l nucleosides. immunomodulatory strategies include the use of cytokines and vaccination.

Abstract: food is a fundamental factor in the human daily routine, not only because it is a basic need, but also because access to it has become a public health problem given that both lack and excess may lead to disease. this study aimed at making a retrospective study to offer subsidies for a reflection about world alimentary patterns. the historic evolution of world nutrition reveals that gastronomy, resources, habits and food patterns are important aspects for a reflection on the complexity and richness among countries. when one talks about food it is impossible to forget hunger, a serious problem for it hits millions around the world. economic and social inequality have hindered acess to food for populations, mainly in developing countries. it is important to perceive the emergency of political decisions that give priority to the economic development through better income distribution and agricultural policies, helped by new technologies.

Preparing future teachers against racism: A training experience at the University of Almería
Rosario Isabel Herrada Valverde
Revista Electronica Interuniversitaria de Formación del Profesorado , 2008,
Abstract: The arrival of a large number of immigrants at Spanish schools has turned classrooms into multicultural spaces. This is the reason why prospective teachers must receive appropriate training in cultural diversity. This paper presents a detailed study of the concept of racism as perceived by a group of prospective teachers who took the course on “Education and Socio-cultural Diversity”, and this concept’s influence to promote a change in their views and attitudes in topics associated with racism. The results show how students dealt with this concept and acknowledged some of their main prejudices. This research demands the inclusion of subjects related to cultural diversity in tertiary education, particularly at the initial stage of teacher-training studies.
El concepto de cultura entre los futuros maestros: un análisis etnográfico. [The concept of culture used by future teachers: an ethnographic analysis]
Herrada Valverde, Rosario Isabel
Revista Electrónica de Investigación y Evaluación Educativa , 2008,
Abstract: The arrival of immigrant families to Spain from other countries has led a sharp increase in foreign students in Spanish schools, which have in turn become multicultural spaces. . The concept of culture could become the framework on which are based discriminations, prejudices and stereotypes towards groups and individuals. This paper describes the main results of an ethnographic study about the perceived concept of culture of students at a Spanish university. In particular this study was developed from data collected among students who, during academic year 2003/2004, attended to “Education and Socio-cultural Diversity”, subject included in this academic year for the first time in the Degree in Education at the University of Almería. This research not only seeks to give an insight into the concept of culture handle these students, but also to analyze the influence of the subject on the concept of culture used by students as well as the influence of the lecturer on their views and attitudes.
