Journal of Orthopaedics and Traumatology , 2004, DOI: 10.1007/s10195-004-0032-y
Abstract: We report the clinical and radiographical results of surgical treatment of 45 patients with femoral fractures after hip replacement, seen at the Orthopaedic and Trauma Center (CTO) of Florence from 1980 to 1997; fractures treated conservatively were excluded from this retrospective review. There were 30 fractures in patients with homolateral total hip prosthesis and 15 in patients with homolateral hemiarthroplasty of the hip. The mean age of the patients was greater in the second group than in the first group (79 vs. 72 years). Fractures were classified according to Duncan and Masri as types B1 (n=16), B2 (n=13), B3 (n=10) and C (n=6). They were treated surgically by open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) using cerclage (n=9), plates and screws (n=19), or plates and cerclage (n=2), or revision procedure using long, non-cemented stems (n=13) and a “two stages” revision in procedure in two cases in whom fractures occurred because of deep infection. At follow-up we evaluated healing, complications, leg length discrepancies, thigh pain, and the patient’s subjective satisfaction. We found non-union only in 1 case (2.4%). Our results confirm the strict correlation between surgical indications and clinical results: ORIF can be safely proposed only if the stem is well fixed. In fact, all 6 unsatisfactory outcomes (14.3%) were due to technical errors during the surgical procedures: the fractures healed (ORIF was correctly performed) but the stems were unstable and continued to give pain and discomfort.

Abstract: background: the post-term pregnancy throughout the years has been reason of anguish and family concern. objective: to determine how the pregnancy post-term behaved in our environment. method: a prospective descriptive and lineal study was performed in the provincial educational gynecobstetric hospital "ana betancourt de mora" of camagüey, from january to december 2006. the universe and the sample were constituted by 100 pregnancy women that had this event in the 42 weeks of pregnancy and more. results: the age group that prevailed was the one of 19 and 24 years, with a total of 35 for 3,5% of the universe, 6,6% didn't have previous experience of childbirth. the most frequent way of ending of pregnancy was the induced one with 86, (86%), and the childbirth type, the dystocic with 53 for 53%. the fluid characteristic that prevailed was the meconial. conclusions: the moderate respiratory depression in the neonate was the main cause of morbility found, followed by balam. while in mothers the most frequent associated disease to pregnancy was the moderate ferripriva anemia.

Abstract: the efficiency of the parasitoid trichogramma lopezandinensis sarmiento to control the quatemalan potato tuber moth teda solanivora (fovolny) in stored potato was evaluated. four experiments were carried out to determine biológica! aspects of their interaction at three trophic levéis constituting the stored potato, the pest and the parasitoid. these experiments included the design of a device to reléase the parasitoid, determination of the densities and frequencies of parasitoid reléase required to prevent damage of the pest and effect of light on the parasitic activity of the wasp. the study was conducted at the research center tibaitatá, in the ipm program of corpoica, and was conducted under controlled conditions of temperature, humidity and light. the experimental unit consisted of a wooden cage with muslln walls, in which a tray was introduced with 100 tubers, of an average 100 g each. an efflcient device to reléase the parasitoid in storage conditions was designed and implemented which was denominated the "tunnel type". it was found that light conditions are an important factor in the parasitic activity of the wasp, presenting the highest percentages of parasitism under normal light conditions in the laboratory compared to complete darkness. in the experiments of densities and frequencies of parasitoid reléase, it was found that frequency is a significant factor in preventing of damage caused by the pest. frequency of reléase every three days showed the best results, indicating that the continuous presence of young females is critical for achieving better parasitism.

Colombia Médica , 2009,
Abstract: Objective: To identify what variables influence having multiple sexual partners. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out with 542 women of two higher education institutions from the northwest of Mexico, who answered a questionnaire measuring psychological variables underlying high-risk sexual behaviors. The data were analyzed with T-tests, Mann-Whitney U tests, and with a multiple linear regression. Results: A multiple linear regression analysis showed the following results: for women from Hermosillo, Sonora, the predictors of high-risk sexual behaviors were biological age, age of sexual debut, and one biological state - I was physically excited -, with those variables explaining 53.4% of the total variance; for women from Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, the predictors were biological age, and two types of biological states - I was physically excited and I was under the influence of alcohol , explaining 20.8% of the total variance. Conclusions: The results underscore the need to design prevention programs directed to avoid HIV infection based on behavioral competencies training.
