Abstract: the objective of this study was to discuss the complexity of preparing the monthly nursing schedule during the nursing administration course, in an inpatient unit of a public teaching hospital, in s?o paulo. we started from the position that the preparation of a monthly schedule consisted of a series of coordinated actions which required: recognition of staff, collection of data needed to characterize the clinical reality, comparison of those data with the literature, and development of a proposal for action, which we would discuss with the nurses in the unit. this experience provided the possibility to reflect on empowerment and the understanding of these professionals about the factors involved in the implementation of this management activity. it allowed us, as well, to demonstrate the importance of diagnosing the needs of the unit and comparing it with the institutional reality, with a view toward possible actions to resolve the identified problems

Abstract: this experience report discusses the use of seminars as a teaching strategy in the discipline of nursing administration ii, in the undergraduate nursing program at the university of s?o paulo. for planning, development and evaluation of the seminars, we adopted a dialectic methodology that conceives of the construction of knowledge in three stages: development of themes, analysis and synthesis, in which the task of teachers is to mediate the phases of mobilization, construction and knowledge synthesis. key assumptions for adult education were met: motivation for learning, analysis of their experiences and the possibility of autonomy in the construction of knowledge through questioning, the use of creativity and proposal of solutions, enabling constructive, significant situations, and competency development. the discussion of themes proposed possible approximation of reality through reflection and discussion of how services are included in the health system.

Journal of International Commercial Law and Technology , 2008,
Abstract: This paper illustrates the effect of BBBEE on good corporate governance. Corporate governance and specifically directors’ duties relating to stakeholder protection are focused on. Traditionally, directors are expected to manage a company in the best interests of the shareholders collectively. The question arises as to whether directors should also consider the interests of other stakeholders, inter alia employees, creditors, the environment and the community. The South African Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment Act 53 of 2003, not only aims at correcting racial imbalances, but also strives to promote social investment and the empowerment of communities. By adhering to this act, directors will by implication consider the interests of the community and give effect to the triple-bottom line approach when managing a company. This paper will illustrate the unique dynamics of corporate governance in South Africa.

Abstract: There has been an increase in the knowledge and interest on nutrition, and functional foods have gained popularity over the last few decades, and the trend is increasing. Probiotics and prebiotics are among the most studied functional foods. Nutrition economics has been defined as the discipline dedicated to researching and characterising health and economic outcomes in nutrition for the benefit of society. The concept and its application to probiotics and prebiotics will be discussed in terms of health and economic benefits and their evaluation. Health economics and concrete applications showing how to maximise long-term nutritional benefits will contribute to motivate consumers in making food choices based on a rational understanding of their own interest. We present a model that shows that nutrition economics can be used as an analytical tool for product and service network development.

Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Mental Health , 2009, DOI: 10.1186/1753-2000-3-22
Abstract: Background The aim of this study was to examine the chronicity of sleep problems in children with chronic illness, and potential predictors of sleep problems. Methods Using data from a longitudinal total population study in Norway, The Bergen Child Study, data on sleep problems, chronic illness and potential confounders were assessed at ages 7 9 and 11 13. Results 295 of 4025 (7.3%) children had a chronic illness, and the prevalence of chronic sleep problems was significantly higher in this group compared to children without chronic illness (6.8% versus 3.6%). Sleep problems at the first wave increased the risk of sleep problems at the second wave, also when adjusting for potential confounders (odds-ratio = 5.41). Hyperactivity and emotional problems were also independent risk factors for later sleep problems. Conclusion These findings call for increased awareness and development of treatment strategies of sleep problems in children with chronic illness.
