Journal of Settlements and Spatial Planning , 2011,
Abstract: Scarce data on physically active and sedentary youth behaviour in the Transylvanian rural space are available. Romania is a relatively new member of the EU; however the socioeconomic status (SES) of the people in this country may differ from other countries. The main differences, not only the geographical ones, between the rural and the urban space could also specifically influence the population’s health and quality of life, in our case the youths’ between 13 and 18 years old.
Recent Advances in the Chemistry of Oripavine and Its Derivatives  [PDF]

Oripavine is the major alkaloid of Papaver orientale. It is an important intermediate in the biosynthesis of morphine alkaloids. Recently, new Papaver somniferum strains have been developed which accumulate thebaine and oripavine, but not morphine and codeine. Therefore, the chemistry of oripavine has been studied intensively to synthesize opioid pharmaceuticals such as oxymorphone, naloxone and buprenorphine.

Breastfeeding is seen as vital for mother and child and therefore is of great public health concern. Early initiation of breastfeeding within one hour of delivery is important as it reduces neonatal mortality. Increasing our understanding of barriers and reasons for not commencing early breastfeeding is important to improve strategies and conditions to overcome such barriers. Hence, the present study aimed to investigate factors influencing time of breastfeeding among women in India, focusing on health care utilisation related issues and partner behaviour. Data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the Government of India’s National Family Health Survey (NFHS) from 2005-2006 (NFHS-3) have been used in this study. Breastfeeding for the latest child was considered in the study. A total of 35,795 female respondents are included in this study. Chi square test and adjusted logistic regression analysis were used. Among all 35,795 women in the study, a total of 31.1% initiated breastfeeding within one hour and 68.6% initiated breastfeeding within the first week. Educational level, economic status and women’s caste or tribe, place of delivery, prenatal visits to health care facilities and assistance during delivery as well as partner’s controlling and violent behavior are important factors influencing time of initiation of breastfeeding. It is evident that policy makers need to ensure that all health professionals support and promote early breastfeeding initiation. It is also important to promote deliveries in hospitals and other healthcare facilities as they may increase early initiation. Furthermore, it is fundamental that efforts are intensified for girls and women to obtain education to increase women’s empowerment and improved gender equality.

The First Romanian Translations of John Steinbeck. Norms, Strategies and Censorship Practices
Studii de Stiinta si Cultura , 2011,
Abstract: Drawing on Gideon Toury’s “norm theory,” and on André Lefevere’s concept of“rewriting,” this paper examines six Romanian translations of John Steinbeck issued between 1942and 1946, seeking to reveal the norms and strategies adopted in their production, as well as shedlight on the role of ideology in shaping the target texts.

Ciphering Indicator approaches and user awareness

Abstract: One of the fundamental mobile phone security problems in GSM is the absence of base station authentication, which allows man-in-the-middle attacks. During such attacks, a third party activates a fake base station, which acts as a bypass to the network, thus switching off the encryption and intercepting the user’s communications. 3G mobile networks enforce mutual authentication but this can be circumvented if the 3G band is jammed by the attacker, forcing the phone to connect using GSM. GSM and newer standards provide a user alert indicating that the encryption has been switched off, which is called a Ciphering Indicator. In the present paper, different approaches followed by various manufacturers concerning the Ciphering Indicator are investigated. A total of 38 different mobile phones ranging from old to new and from simple to smart-phones that were produced by 13 different manufacturers were intercepted using a GSM testing device in order to document their reactions. Four approaches were identified with some manufacturers choosing not to implement the feature at all. It was also found that in the cases in which the feature was actually implemented, no universal indication was used and it was seldom documented in the phones’ manuals. User awareness regarding the Ciphering Indicator and security issues was also investigated via an empirical survey employing more than 7,000 users from 10 countries and was found to be significantly low.

Abstract: After World War I Romania was sized with contradictory feelings: on the one hand: a general euphoria, stimulating many ambitions, on the other hand, the fear that everything that had been obtained through the sacrifice of half a million Romanian soldiers could have been lost. The insecurity of its borders and the fear of the revisionist forces counterattack determined Romania to conclude a treaty of alliance with Poland (March 3, 1921), then to join the countries that were part of the Little Entente (Czechoslovakia, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia). It was followed by France, terrified by its inability to stop the expansion of Germany.

Abstract: In order to synthesize the exploration of above presented ideas, wesuggest the following conclusions: Pope John Paul II cherished Saint Thomas as representing that eternal novelty of thinking” which brought us close to the ontic space of knowledge, the dynamic principle of which is Being. The climax of this condition would be the moment of embracing the truth, which would trigger that vital necessity for metaphysics. According to the stated objective ofthe necessary and indispensable ratio between reason and faith, we see that Tomas suggested the vision of the objective, transcendent and universal truth. This fact determined Pope John Paul II to appreciate that “passion” for truth. The man of our time must walk again towards the light of this truth. In this sense, Saint Thomas’ philosophy represents the guide above all. Its philosophic importance, meaning that “it is truly the philosophy of Being, and not the philosophy of a simple epiphany”, confirms its aim to provide a constant answerto many of the problems that concerns the human mind: the problems ofknowledge and Being, the problems of speaking and doing, the problems of the world, and the problems related with Man and God.

Abstract: In the encyclical letter Fides et ratio, no 42, Pope John Paul II submits to debate the beginnings of the scholastic philosophy, of the philosophically educated reason. The period beginning with the IXth century is generically called scholastic. The concept (schola-school) refers, as it’s well known, to those responsible for the sciences in a school. We refer to the teachers who activated within the diocesan and the court schools built by Carol the Great and afterwards in universities. As we know, by scholastic we pertain nowadays to the method of work applied in educational didactics, where the pros and cons of the questions are judiciously examined in order to find an explicit and distinct solution. Historically speaking, we already find ourselves in the period where the history of religion was assigned for the primacy of logos. From a specific point of view, belief means more than taking a decision – in favour of the truth. In other words, belief means sharing the conviction that intellection and meaning don’t represent an additional and coincidental product of the human being. On the contrary, every being is a product of thought and, in its most intimate structure, constitutes in itself a thought
