Effect of training characteristics on object classification: an application using Boosted Decision Trees
Ignacio Sevilla-Noarbe,Penélope Etayo-Sotos
Physics , 2015, DOI: 10.1016/j.ascom.2015.03.010
Abstract: We present an application of a particular machine-learning method (Boosted Decision Trees, BDTs using AdaBoost) to separate stars and galaxies in photometric images using their catalog characteristics. BDTs are a well established machine learning technique used for classification purposes. They have been widely used specially in the field of particle and astroparticle physics, and we use them here in an optical astronomy application. This algorithm is able to improve from simple thresholding cuts on standard separation variables that may be affected by local effects such as blending, badly calculated background levels or which do not include information in other bands. The improvements are shown using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 9, with respect to the type photometric classifier. We obtain an improvement in the impurity of the galaxy sample of a factor 2-4 for this particular dataset, adjusting for the same efficiency of the selection. Another main goal of this study is to verify the effects that different input vectors and training sets have on the classification performance, the results being of wider use to other machine learning techniques.
Application of GPUs for the Calculation of Two Point Correlation Functions in Cosmology
Rafael Ponce,Miguel Cardenas-Montes,Juan Jose Rodriguez-Vazquez,Eusebio Sanchez,Ignacio Sevilla
Physics , 2012,
Abstract: In this work, we have explored the advantages and drawbacks of using GPUs instead of CPUs in the calculation of a standard 2-point correlation function algorithm, which is useful for the analysis of Large Scale Structure of galaxies. Taking into account the huge volume of data foreseen in upcoming surveys, our main goal has been to accelerate significantly the analysis codes. We find that GPUs offer a 100-fold increase in speed with respect to a single CPU without a significant deviation in the results. For comparison's sake, an MPI version was developed as well. Some issues, like code implementation, which arise from using this option are discussed.
Justification of public investment initiatives on water transfer systems as an instrument for water balances in Spain: the case of the Júcar–Vinalopó water transfer system  [PDF]
Martin Sevilla, Teresa Torregrosa
Agricultural Sciences (AS) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/as.2011.24067
Abstract: One of the most controversial issues in recent years in water management has been finding a balance between available resources and water needs related to certain territories. The changes brought about by a new awareness over the need to preserve the environment, the social perception of the ownership of the river channels, the need for adjust financial costs arising from the waterworks and the compliance with European standards urgently require redesign of water supply policies in force at this time. The Júcar-Vinalopó water transfer, considered as an historic aspiration for many years in the region, has been regarded as a key element for solving the depletion of groundwater in a large area located in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, mainly for irrigation purposes. In this paper we present an approach to the economic aspects related to the implementation of the project, its investment and financing arrangements and the question of the subsequent management with the impact of the well-known “recovery cost principle", highlighting the current difficulties in carrying out projects of this size, due to severe limitations, as social and economic conditions of the transfer.
"NO VENGO A PEDIRTE NADA": LA MúSICA EN VILLA RICA, CAUCA, COMO UN ESPACIO DONDE SE HACE SOCIEDAD
SEVILLA,MANUEL;
Revista Colombiana de Antropología , 2009,
Abstract: this paper presents the results from a recent research about traditional music practices at villa rica, cauca, colombia. from an ethnographic description of three social contexts (the nativity celebration, children and adults wake, and work and leisure spaces), and a exploration of different ways to deal with demands of physical and human work resources, the article argues that traditional music practices are privileged instances where people communicate, transform and reassert the different criteria of collective action. criteria that are at the basis of solidarity practices of villa rica villagers. in this sense, the main argument agrees with the idea that traditional music practices are spaces where society is made, and not just a reflection of it
Las músicas tradicionales como instancias de producción cultural: el caso de Villa Rica (Cauca)
SEVILLA,MANUEL;
Signo y Pensamiento , 2009,
Abstract: in this article we present the results of research work on the role played by folk music in the municipality of villa rica (cauca, colombia). thus, we describe three different social contexts (during the christmas celebrations of nativity, during children and adults' wakes, and both at the workplace and/or during recreational activities) where folk music is performed, plus two entrepreneurial projects related to music performance in the aforementioned contexts. based on pierre bourdieu's theories on cultural production, our text basically argues that there are intermediate zones where the "logics" common to the two different sub-fields merge together via the social agents involved in the activities
Marx(ismos) y las teorías de la justicia
Carlos Sevilla
Foro Interno : Anuario de Teoría Política , 2006,
Abstract: This article examines certain marxist critiques of the theories of justice that arose after the publication of A Theory of Justice, by John Rawls, in 1971. This book led the field of liberal political theory towards an explicitly normative focus that tended to develop into general theories or in systematic analyses of more specific concepts. In this article we shall broaden the sociological and historical critique of theories of justice based on the debate that began in the pages of the New Left Review.

Abstract: Critical advance of an ongoing research project which analyzes the relation between cultural patrimony and the popular urban movement in Mexico City. It is postulated that neighborhood identity and organizational process restate ofRcial and traditional concepts of cultural patrimony by including intangible cultural meanings stamped on the urban space.
The Development of an Instrument to Carry out Clinical Interviews Easily as Well as Medical Recommendations in Nahuatl in Mexico  [PDF]
Nelson Eduardo Alvarez Licona, María de la Luz Sevilla González, Eduardo Alvarez Sevilla, Ricardo Alvarez Sevilla
Advances in Anthropology (AA) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/aa.2018.83007
Abstract: This document shows the mechanism and logic which were used to develop the communicative instrument. This instrument will facilitate the communication between the health personnel and the Nahuatl population in Mexico. Using this instrument, clinical interviews, as well as medical recommendations may be carried out despite the lack of knowledge of the Nahuatl language. The instrument was developed taking in consideration that Nahuatl is a tone language in comparison with Spanish grammar. Regarding phonetics, it can be read since it shares the same alphabet. The knowledge of this language was required to decide the use of the polite language instead of the reverential language which is more complicated. This document is based on the field research, the clinical interviews done by the internists, as well as the clinical experience of doctors who were responsible for the medical recommendations. Both the clinical interview and the medical recommendations are presented for the application as well as additional documents such as dictionaries and compendiums.
