Universitas Psychologica , 2008,
Abstract: with support in the works of duval (2004) regarding the operation of conversion between semiotic registries, the studies of numerical "transcodification" are analyzed. it is stated that in the studies on the understanding process of the decimal system of numeration by children, it is convenient to relate the activity of conversion between the verbal and hindu-arabic registers to the operating activity of children, when they try to respond to the logical demands presented to them by the understanding of the syntax implied in the decimal system of numeration, as a form of revealing the mechanisms that govern the constructions built by the children in this field.

A checklist of marine sponge species (Porifera: Demospongiae) from Tuxpan reef, Veracruz, Mexico, collected during 2004, 2005 and 2006 by free and SCUBA diving equipment, is presented. The results show the presence of 18 species belonging to 13 genera and 13 families. 17 speices represent new records for the northern coral reefs of Veracruz, and the 18th species (Aplysina cauliformis Carter, 1882) is a new record for the state. This information may help to define appropriate management, monitoring and protection strategies for the coral reefs of the north of Veracruz, which have been proposed as a natural preserve area recently.

Abstract: this study was undertaken to investigate the effects of citric acid (ca) on aflatoxin degradation, growth performance and some serum constituents in broilers. 300 one-day-old ross broiler chickens were randomly divided into five treatment groups of three replicates, 20 chicks each. four groups received the diet supplemented with ca (6.25, 12.5, 25 and 50 g/kg), while the other served as a control. diet was prepared following the nrc guidelines and the experiment was terminated when chicks were 28 d old. the results showed that aflatoxins in the diet, at a concentration of 39 ng/g were almost degraded (92%) by the acidification procedure. in general, live body weight (lbw) was slightly higher in animals fed with the addition of ca; diet containing the highest concentration (50 g ca/kg) resulted in a significant increase in lbw and improvement of feed conversion ratio. however, as the ca concentration increased, higher serum aspartate aminotransferase activity values were registered. on the contrary, hematocrite, total protein and albumin were not affected by any level of added ca. from these results, it is concluded that dietary ca supplementation can be used as an additive to degrade aflatoxins in the ration as well as to promote growth performance in young broiler chickens.

Abstract Classic pathology textbooks claim that acute splenitis reflects septic states, nevertheless, the evidence upon which that association is based remains unclear. We assessed the occurrence of acute splenitis, as an indicator of systemic infection, in 34 autopsies performed in patients in whom the cause of death was due to multiple organ dysfunction syndrome, secondary to sepsis (group A); and in 37 cases of death by non-infectious causes (group B). These necropsies were done during the period January 31 1999 - December 31 2000, at the Pathology Department of the Hospital General del Sur "Dr. Pedro Iturbe", Maracaibo, Venezuela. Acute splenitis was observed in 79% of the cases in group A, whereas it was absent in group B (p<0,001). Thirty three (97%) of the patients of group A did not receive antibiotic therapy, and died within the first 24 hours following admission. Our results suggest that based on a proper clinical-pathological correlation, non-specific acute splenitis constitutes a finding that reflects a septic state, at least in cases that do not receive anti-microbial therapy.
