Epidemiology and Pathophysiology of Pediatric Spinal Cord Injury
Türkiye Fiziksel Tip ve Rehabilitasyon Dergisi , 2008,
Abstract: It is essential to know the incidence and etiology of pediatric spinal cord injury (SCI) in order to identify risk groups, improve prevention and plan care and rehabilitation. SCI significantly and usually irreversibly alters every aspect of a person’s life. Pediatric SCI is relatively uncommon, with distinctive manifestations due to the characteristic anatomical and physiologic features of the growing child. The interaction of growth and development, modified by injury, is responsible for the various clinical deformities frequently seen in pediatric patients. The incidence of pediatric SCI is lower than in adults, varying from 1 to 10% of all spinal injuries. However, the diagnostic studies and images differ from adults and require particular consideration. This article provides a review of epidemiologic data from different countries and also the pathophysiology of pediatric SCI with unique aspects in outline. Türk Patoloji Dergisi , 2013,
Abstract: Objective: The aim of the study was to provide an overview to infectious and reactive cytological effects of intrauterine devices, which are one of the most widely used methods of contraception, with the results we obtained in the Mardin region.Material and Method: We evaluated together the pap smears of the 300 intrauterine device (+) and 300 intrauterine device (-) patients sent to the pathology department in the period of 2010-2011. Genital infection rates and frequency of reactive-dysplastic cellular changes were statistically compared between the groups together with the literature data. Results: In the intrauterine device (+) group, 2 (+) and more severe inflammation was observed in 66.3% of cases. Bacterial vaginosis (26%), candida (12%) and trichomonas vaginalis (8%) were recorded as the most common infectious agents, followed by actinomyces (4%). Between the groups of intrauterine device (+) and (-), no significant difference was observed in terms of the incidence of squamous cell abnormalities, except ASC-US (p=0.02). In the intrauterine device (+) group, the presence of atypical glandular cells and reactive findings was significantly higher than the control group. After the removal of the intrauterine device, 61 cases that had control smears showed regression, with a rate of %75.4 (n=46).Conclusion: The local irritative and inflammatory effect of intrauterine devices basically causes reactive and regenerative changes mostly in glandular cells. Intrauterine devices disrupt the genital flora and significantly increase the frequency of genital infection by creating a foreign body reaction.
Neutron star solutions in perturbative quadratic gravity

Physics , 2011, DOI: 10.1088/1475-7516/2012/05/036
Abstract: We study the structure of neutron stars in R+\beta\ R^{\mu \nu} R_{\mu \nu} gravity model with perturbative method. We obtain mass--radius relations for six representative equations of state (EoSs). We find that, for |\beta| ~ 10^11 cm^2, the results differ substantially from the results of general relativity. Some of the soft EoSs that are excluded within the framework of general relativity can be reconciled for certain values of \beta\ of this order with the 2 solar mass neutron star recently observed. For values of \beta\ greater than a few 10^11 cm^2 we find a new solution branch allowing highly massive neutron stars. By referring some recent observational constraints on the mass--radius relation we try to constrain the value of \beta\ for each EoS. The associated length scale \sqrt{\beta} ~ 10^6 cm is of the order of the typical radius of neutron stars implying that this is the smallest value we could find by using neutron stars as a probe. We thus conclude that the true value of \beta\ is most likely much smaller than 10^11 cm^2.

African Journal of Biotechnology , 2010,
Abstract: The effect of methanol extracts of 10 macrofungi was evaluated on grain germination of maize (Zea mays L.). Germination percentage, radicle and plumule length and the level of carbohydrates and fatty acids were measured. Fungal metabolites inhibited germination up to 90.96%, plumule (97.77%) and radicle (92.83%) development. Plumule and radicle lengths were stimulated 35.26 and 10.60% in some assays, respectively. The fungal metabolites decreased the glucose (97.60%), sucrose (90.34%), fructose (96.85%), maltose (95.64%), oleic acid (97.50%) and linoleic acid (98.25%) levels, whereas increasing levels of the glucose (165.14%), sucrose (166.53%), fructose (83.18%), maltose (124.73%), oleic acid (6975.00%) and linoleic acid (5233.33%) were detected in some assays. It is concluded that macrofungi metabolites have commonly inhibitory effects on physiological and morphological processes of germinating maize grain except for considerable increases in the some parameters investigated.

Türk Patoloji Dergisi , 2012,
Abstract: Objective: The aim of this paper was to observe the reactive changes of epithelial cells exposed to the influence of cervicovaginitis agents that play an important role in the cytology practice and may cause an exaggerated appearance.Material and Method: 378 cases with cervicovaginitis caused by a specific agent were compared with 100 control cases. It was recorded if the inflammation had concomitant cellular changes and atypia or not. After treatment, control smears were examined. The reactive and atypical situations of the cells were considered after the treatment. With the aid of the previous data, the answer to the following question was searched: Is epithelial atypia a real event or a reactive atypia that accompanies an existing cervicitis agent? Results: In the first interpretation, Candida group had the most frequent reactive and ASC-US (Atypic Squamous cells of Undetermined Significance) changes (56,4% and 59,5% respectively). The bacterial vaginosis and Trichomonas vaginalis groups showed ASC-US rates of 25% and 9,5% respectively while in control group the rate was 6,0%. After treatment, the number of cases of ASC-US decreased from 50 to 11. Similarly, the number decreased from 21 to 10 in the bacterial vaginosis group. Conclusion: Cervicovaginitis agents need more attention because of their outcomes. Being aware of the cervicovaginitis agents during interpretation is essential for preventing a false positive diagnosis and unnecessary anxiety especially where cellular atypia is concerned.

Abstract: Ob-jec-ti-ve: Male osteoporosis (OP) is a major problem in clinical medicine, but has gained less interest than female OP. The mechanisms of male OP have not been explained well and are not clear yet. It is suggested that there is a role for oxidative stress in the pathophysiology of many diseases, one of them being OP. In this study, we investigated the effect of orchiectomy on bone mineral density (BMD), the level of antioxidant enzymes, lipid peroxidation, and erythrocyte deformability in rats and the effect of vitamin C supplementation on the possible changes in these parameters. Metarials and Methods: A total of 20 male Wistar albino rats were randomized into three groups: controls (C, n=6), orchiectomized rats (O, n=7) and orchiectomized rats receiving vitamin C supplementation (OVC, n=7). The concentration of superoxide-dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in bone tissue homogenates were measured to assess the oxidative stress. Erythrocyte deformability was measured using erythrocyte suspensions at 5% hematocrit in phosphate buffered saline. Results: When oxidant/antioxidant parameters were compared between the groups, SOD activity in bone tissue was significantly higher in group O than in group OVC (p=0.032). Erythrocyte deformability was significantly higher in group O than in group C and OVC (p=0.003, p=0.018, respectively). Conclusion: Erythrocyte deformability may show negative variations, suggesting a causative role in disruption of blood flow and tissue perfusion, which also affect bone metabolism negatively. Vitamin C supplementation seems to reverse those negative effects of variations in erythrocyte deformability. However, our preliminary results need to be confirmed in wider serious of experimental and clinical trials. Turk J Phys Med Re-hab 2012;58:121-5.

Anadolu Kardiyoloji Dergisi , 2009,
Abstract: Objective: It is known that increased sympathetic activity and decreased parasympathetic activity are present in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). This study aims to investigate the correlations of autonomic dysfunction and differences in autonomic circadian activity with arrhythmia prevalence in women with FMS.Methods: Fifty female patients with FMS and 30 healthy female controls were included in this cross-sectional, case-controlled study. A 12-lead electrocardiogram and 24-hour Holter monitoring were performed in all patients to evaluate arrhythmias and autonomic function tests. Heart rate variability (HRV) parameters were utilized to detect autonomic dysfunction in patients with FMS. HRV measurements were performed in total 24-hour, day time (06:00-22:59), night time (23:00-05:59) periods and during autonomic tests (stand - supine, inspiration-expiration and Valsalva tests) using 24-hour Holter monitoring recordings. Student t-test , Mann–Whitney U and Pearson Chi-square tests were used for comparisons of the data between groups. The correlation of data was tested by using Spearman correlation analysis. Results: The mean ages of the patient and control groups were 38±7.4 and 36±8.1 years, respectively. In HRV measurements, high frequency (HF) power, was significantly decreased in the patient group as compared with control group (167.4 msec2 (107.0- 312.0) vs.314.5 msec2 (124.0- 905.0), p=0.017). The low frequency/HF ratio (LF/HF) values for total 24 hours (2.22±0.18 vs. 1.22±0.12, p<0.001) and in the night time period (2.78±1.97 vs.1.15±0.77, p<0.001) were found to be significantly higher in the patient group than in control one. The ratio of LF/HFDay / LF/HFNight was markedly higher in the control group (2.67 (1.22- 5.65) vs. 1.45 (0.83- 2.05), p=0.004). The prevalence (p=0.028) and total number (127.1±21.4 vs. 187.3±62.3, p=0.019) of supraventricular extrasystoles in 24-hour period was higher in the patient group . Conclusion: The sympathetic activity was significantly increased and parasympathetic activity significantly decreased in FMS patients. Additionally, significant autonomic circadian activity changes were also detected in these patients. These autonomic changes might be linked to increased arrhythmia prevalence.

Dicle Medical Journal , 2011,
Abstract: Objectives: In this study, the epidemiological analysis of the bladder cancers was performed accompanied by the known environmental factors.Materials and methods: In this retrospective study, pathology archival materials of 420 patients (350 men (83.4%) and 70 women (16.6%)), consisting of bladder by transurethral resection, cystectomy and cystoprostatectomy specimens, histopathologically diagnosed as urothelial carcinoma and papillary urothelial neoplasia with low malignant potential, were included. For bladder carcinomas, the parameters such as tumor types, age, sex, and invasiveness of tumor were evaluated and analyzed. Results: In the study, it was found that 24.7% of papillary urothelial neoplasia with low malignant potential, 46.1% of low-grade urothelial carcinoma, and 29.0% of high grade urothelial carcinoma. The rate of bladder urothelial carcinomas was 5 times greater in men than in women. In addition, the high-grade papillary urothelial carcinoma was seen more frequently in men than in women (31.2% and 23.1% respectively), while low-grade papillary urothelial carcinoma was seen more frequently in women than in men (32.9% and 18.5% respectively) (p<0.05).Conclusion: The bladder urothelial carcinoma was more common in men than women, and high-grade urothelial carcinoma invading the lamina propria and the muscularis propria also found in a higher ratio in male. Further clinical and experimental studies are needed to explore the cause of high frequency of high-grade types in male gender.
Analysis of the LOHAS consumer segment attitudes with regard to green brands
Zoran Krupka,David Kelei
Tr?i?te/Market , 2011,
Abstract: Nowadays, as most markets are saturated with different products and services, brand has become a basis for differentiation and gaining competitive advantage. Although a relatively new phenomenon, both companies and consumers have put greater importance on green brands over the past few years. The most important and the largest set of green brands consumers is the LOHAS segment. For the purposes of this paper, empirical research was conducted among LOHAS consumers in the Republic of Croatia of their attitudes with regard to green brands. Survey results showed that LOHAS consumers not only prefer green brands but that they are willing to pay higher prices for them, even though they do not think that green brands should be higher priced. Also, research has shown that LOHAS consumers feel obliged to buy green brands because of personal values and beliefs. Companies should take advantage of the market situation and adopt green business as a business philosophy. They should learn more about LOHAS consumers and adjust their marketing communication to them as traditional are less effective in this segment. Doing so would increase the loyalty of LOHAS consumers. This is particularly important since they are generally early adopters of green brands and, as such, have an impact on others.
