SYNTHESIS, CHARACTERIZATION OF SOME NOVEL PYRAZOLES AND THEIR GROWTH PROMOTING ACTIVITY ON SOME FLOWERING PLANTS

Abstract: A series of chlorosubstituted 4-aroylpyrazoles have been synthesized by refluxing of chlorosubstituted-3-aroylflavones and 3-alkoylchromone with phenylhydrazine hydrochloride in dioxane medium with 0.5 ml of piperidine. Chlorosubstituted-3-aroylflavones and chlorosubstituted-3-alkoylchromone were prepared by refluxing them separately with iodine crystal in ethanol. Initially chlorosubstituted-3-aroylflavanones and 3-alkoylchromanone have been prepared separately by the interaction of different aldehydes with 1(2-hydroxy-3,5-dichlorophenyl)-3-phenyl-1,3-propanedione. Constitutions of synthesized compounds have been confirmed on the basis of elemental analysis, molecular weight determination, UV-Visible, I.R. and 1H-NMR spectral data. The titled compounds were evaluated for their growth promoting activity on some flowering plants viz. Papaver rhoeas, Dianthus chinensis, Candy tuft, Calendula officinalise, Gladiola tristis, Gaillardia.

The outcome of basic research has pointed to the important role of enamel matrix protein derivative (EMD) in periodontal wound healing. Histologic results from animal and human studies have shown that treatment with EMD promotes periodontal regeneration. Moreover, clinical studies have indicated that treatment with EMD positively influences periodontal wound healing in humans. The goal of this paper is to review the existing literature on EMD.
An overview of insulin pump therapy: Appropriate use of an expensive resource

Abstract: Insulin pump therapy is an option for intensive insulin therapy in patients with type 1 diabetes who meet the criteria described in this article. Pump therapy may assist in the reduction of haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and the frequency of severe hypoglycaemia. It can also lead to improvements in awareness of hypoglycaemia and quality of life. Careful assessment of patients is vital, as pump therapy is an expensive treatment option and can be dangerous if used incorrectly. Intensive education of patients who meet the criteria is essential. This will reduce possible risks associated with pump therapy. A team approach is needed, consisting of a minimum of a doctor and a diabetes educator who are experienced in pump therapy, as well as a registered dietitian who has expertise in carbohydrate counting. A psychologist is also a useful member of the team and can help with patient assessment and selection.

Nigerian health workers’ views concerning factors influencing paediatric adherence to anti-retroviral therapy

Abstract: Few studies have focused on paediatric anti-retroviral therapy (ART) adherence in Nigeria, probably because of the ethical challenges involved in studying children. The study aimed to identify factors that influence paediatric ART adherence as perceived by health care workers providing ART services in two cities in Nigeria. Knowledge about such factors would be used to formulate recommendations for enhancing paediatric ART adherence in Nigeria, for facilitating the tasks of the health care workers and for enhancing the ART programme’s effectiveness. An exploratory descriptive qualitative research design was used to identify and to describe health care workers’ views in Kano and Lagos, Nigeria. Three focus group discussions were conducted at two clinics that provide free paediatric ARVs (antiretroviral drugs). The transcribed data were analysed by using the framework approach of data analysis. Health care providers perceived poverty, illiteracy, stigma, discrimination, inappropriate care approaches, and parental dynamics as factors that influence paediatric ART adherence. Paediatric ART adherence levels in Nigeria could be enhanced by emphasising paediatric ART adherence counselling and by adopting a comprehensive family centred care approach, by improving free paediatric ART services and by empowering parents and reducing stigma and discrimination. Min studies het al op pediatriese anti-retrovirale behandeling (ARB) nakoming in Nigeri gefokus, wat moontlik toegeskryf kan word aan die etiese uitdagings betrokke by die bestudering van kinders. Die studie het gepoog om faktore te identifiseer wat pediatriese ARB nakoming kan be nvloed, soos waargeneem deur gesondheidsdienswerkers wat ARB dienste verskaf in twee stede in Nigeri . Kennis van sulke faktore sal aangewend word om aanbevelings te maak om die pediatriese ARB nakoming in Nigeri te verbeter, om die taak van die gesondheidsorgwerkers te vergemaklik en om die ARM (anti-retrovirale medisyne) program se doeltreffendheid te verbeter. ‘n Verkennende beskrywende kwalitatiewe navorsingsontwerp was benut ten einde gesondheidswerkers in Kano en Lagos, Nigeri , se standpunte te identifiseer en te beskryf. Drie fokusgroepbesprekings is gehou in twee klinieke wat gratis ARMs verskaf. Die getranskribeerde data is ontleed deur die raamwerkbenadering tot data analise te gebruik. Gesondheidsdienswerkers het waargeneem dat armoede en ongeletterdheid, stigma en diskriminasie, ontoepaslike sorgbenaderings en ouerlike dinamika, faktore was wat pediatriese ARB nakoming be nvloed het. Pediatriese ARB nakomingsvlakke in Nigeri kan verbeter word deur pediatriese ARB nakomingsberading te beklemtoon, deur die aanvaarding van ‘n omvattende gesinsgesentreerde sorgbenadering wat gratis ARB dienste bied, deur die verbetering van ARB dienste, die bemagtiging van ouers en die vermindering van stigma en diskriminasie.
Effects of heavy metals on some proximate composition of Eichhornia crassipes

Abstract: Effects of 8 heavy metals (Ag, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn) on the total chlorophyll, foliar proline, and protein and starch contents of Eichhornia crassipes was investigated. Plantlets were grown in quarter-strength Hoagland's solution and supplemented with 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 1.0, 3.0 and 5.0 mM of each of the metals for 3 weeks. There was a significant reduction (p≤0.05) in total chlorophyll, protein and starch contents, while foliar proline increased significantly. The effect of used engine oil on carbohydrate, mineral content and nitrate reductase activity of leafy vegetable (Amaranthus hybridus L.)

Abstract: The effects of used engine oil on carbohydrate, mineral elements and nitrate reductase activity of Amaranthus hybridus were investigated. Seedlings were grown for 8 weeks in soil containing 0-5 % v/w used engine oil. There was a significant (p=0.05) low level of mineral elements in plants grown in oil treated soils. The carbohydrate content of the control plants was significantly higher than the values observed for plants grown in oil treated soils. The control plants had a mean value of 48.3 ± 0.5 ìg g-1 dry wt, while 42.0 ± 1.0 and 30.9 ± 0.4 ìg g-1 dry wt were observed for plants treated with 1 and 5 % oil. There was significant inhibitory effect on nitrate reductase activity in plants that were exposed to engine oil. Therefore, the potential risk of used engine oil as potent environmental pollutant has been established from the results of this study

Abstract: The innate immunity is the immediate and sole response of invertebrates for the protection against foreign substances and pathogens. In insects, it relies on both humoral and cellular responses that are mediated via certain recognizing receptors and activation of several signalling pathways. Fat body and hemocytes are the origins for the production and secretion of antimicrobial agents and activators/regulators of cellular response, while cell mediated immunity in insects is performed by hemocytes. In the last years, research has focused on the mechanisms of microbial recognition and activation of intracellular signalling molecules in response to invaders. In this review, we summarize the mechanisms of the innate immunity in insects and refer to potential interactions between humoral and cellular responses, combined with the involving signalling pathways and their cross talk.

Chlorosubstituted-3-aroylflavones and chlorosubstituted-3-alkoylchromone were prepared by refluxing them separately with iodine crystal in ethanol. Initially chlorosubstituted-3-aroylflavanones and 3-alkoylchromanone were prepared by the interaction of different aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes with 1-(2’-hydroxy-3’,5’-dichlorophenyl)-3-phenyl-1,3-propanedione. Constitutions of synthesized compounds were confirmed on the basis of elemental analysis, molecular weight determination, UV-Visible, I.R. and 1H-NMR spectral data. The titled compounds were evaluated for their growth promoting activity on some flowering plants viz. Papaver rhoeas, Calendula officinalise, Gladiola tristis, Gaillardia aristata, Dianthus chinensis, and Iberis sp. (candytuft). The results indicate that applicated plants had higher shoots and more number of leaves.
