A Two-Stage Dimension Reduction Method for Induced Responses and Its Applications
Hung Hung
Statistics , 2012,
Abstract: Researchers in the biological sciences nowadays often encounter the curse of high-dimensionality, which many previously developed statistical models fail to overcome. To tackle this problem, sufficient dimension reduction aims to estimate the central subspace (CS), in which all the necessary information supplied by the covariates regarding the response of interest is contained. Subsequent statistical analysis can then be made in a lower-dimensional space while preserving relevant information. Oftentimes studies are interested in a certain transformation of the response (the induced response), instead of the original one, whose corresponding CS may vary. When estimating the CS of the induced response, existing dimension reduction methods may, however, suffer the problem of inefficiency. In this article, we propose a more efficient two-stage estimation procedure to estimate the CS of an induced response. This approach is further extended to the case of censored responses. An application for combining multiple biomarkers is also illustrated. Simulation studies and two data examples provide further evidence of the usefulness of the proposed method.
Ongoing Blood Pressure Change in Both Upper Extremities: An Unusual Presentation of Aortic Dissection  [PDF]
Hung Yi Chen
International Journal of Clinical Medicine (IJCM) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/ijcm.2011.24078
Abstract: Aortic dissection is a critical condition requiring immediate assessment and management. Patients with this condition usually present with severe chest pain and high blood pressure. However, because of the variety of presenting symptoms and features, it is a challenge to identify this condition, and patients are frequently misdiagnosed. The potentially critical course of aortic dissection can result in tragedy. We present the case of a 46-year-old woman who initially presented with a light headache and sensory loss in her right upper limb. She had a medical history of hypertension without regular medication, and her blood pressure (BP) was 110/67 mmHg on arrival. Four days later, she was sent to the emergency department again because she experienced transient loss of consciousness lasting for a few minutes. Her BP was 94/57 mmHg in the right arm and 89/54 in the left arm. She was admitted to the hospital, and the pulses in both upper limbs were impalpable on the following day. Chest magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was arranged, and subsequently, aortic dissection was diagnosed. The case presented with unusual characteristics, which increased the difficulty in immediate correct diagnosis.
Influence of the Neutron Flux Characteristic Parameters in the Irradiation Channels of Reactor on NAA Results Using k0-Standardization Method  [PDF]
Tran Van Hung
American Journal of Analytical Chemistry (AJAC) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ajac.2012.33033
Abstract: An approximation method using to estimate the influence of the uncertainties of the neutron flux characteristic parameters in the irradiation positions on the NAA results using k0-standardization technique was presented. Those are the epithermal reactor neutron spectrum shape-factor α, the effective resonace energy Ε for a given nuclide and the thermal to epithermal neutron flux ratio f. The method is applied to estimate the effect of the uncertainties in the determination of α Ε, and f on final NAA results for some irradiation channels of the Dalat reactor. It also shows that presented method is suitable in practical use for the estimation of the errors due to the uncertainty of the neutron flux characteristic parameters at the irradiation position.

Journal of Surface Engineered Materials and Advanced Technology (JSEMAT) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/jsemat.2012.223033
Abstract: Laser surface annealing provides a rapid and efficient means for surface alloying and modification of ceramic materials. In this study, Alumina-13% Titania coatings were sprayed with a water-stabilized plasma spray gun. The coated surface was treated by Excimer laser having a wavelength of 248 nm and pulse duration of 24 ns. The surface structure of the treated coating was examined by field emission scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction (XRD). A detailed analysis of the effects of various laser parameters including laser energy density (fluence), pulse repetition rate (PRR), and number of pulses on the morphology and the microstructure of the coatings are presented.

Modern Economy (ME) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/me.2012.34056
Abstract: Remarkable economic growth in China has resulted in a change in the diet behavior of adults. This paper examines how changing socio-demographic characteristics, local food availability, and food prices may affect the fat intake among Chinese adults as a result of the economic growth. This paper goes beyond existing studies on the similar topic by two fronts. Instead of using a simple cross-sectional survey, a longitudinal sample of 2242 adults aged 20 and above in 1997 and 2006 was constructed. In addition, we estimated a fat intake equation using the quantile regression model to investigate the heterogeneous effects of the exogenous factors on the fat intake distribution. Results indicate that the fat intake of Chinese adults has increased over time. In particular, the increase in food availability significantly affects the fat intake of the Chinese adults.

Abstract: Purpose: To evaluate 2 surgical prosedures in treatment of congenital clubfeet in children younger than 24 months. Materials and methods: Data were analyzed on 319 patients (448 feet) from July 1990 to December 2005. Clinical and classification for all patients according to Diméglio. Operated patients were devided into two group: Group1, selective soft tissue release; and Group 2, selective soft tissue release combined with cuboid decancelation. Surgical result were classified according to McKay’s system. Results: There were 103 females (32.3%) and 216 males (67.7%) in this study. There were 192 patients (268 feet) in group 1, 127 patients (180 feet) in group 2. Bilateral involvement was found in 129 patients (40.4%), only the left foot affected in 65 patients (20.4%), and only the right in 125 patients (39.2%). According to the classification of Diméglio Grade II was seen in 32.4%, Grade III in 53,1%, and Grade IV in 14.5%. Postoperatively, in group 1, we got excellent result in 29.1%, good result in 49.2%, fair result in 18.3%, and poor result in 3.4%. In group 2, we attained excellent result in 50.6%, good result in 42.2%, fair result in 6.1% and poor result in 1.1%. The good to excellent result in group 2 was significantly higher in group 1 with p = 0.000042. There was no failure in both groups. Residual adduction of forefoot in frontal plane was seen in 78.0% of group 1, and 10.6% of group 2, which was also statistically significant with p ~ 0. Conclusion: Generally speaking, the procedure of selective soft tissue releases combined with cuboid decancelation showed an outstanding result with good to excellent result of 92.8%. Surgical procedure is simple, safe, and applicable for all patients with clubfeet’s deformyties.

Case Reports in Clinical Medicine (CRCM) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/crcm.2013.23059

Fever of unknown origin is still a medical challenge. 67Ga single photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography images are commonly used to evaluate the final diagnosis of fever of unknown origin. We presented a case of fever of unknown origin undergone 67Ga scintigraphy and an intra-abdominal 67Ga avid tumor was detected which suspected to be a neoplasm. Further contrast enhanced computed tomography revealed that the lesion was a large renal carbuncle. We concluded that the contrast-enhanced CT or single photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography with contrast enhancement can be performed to further improve diagnostic performance.

Open Journal of Orthopedics (OJO) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojo.2013.32026

Background: Innominate osteotomy procedures have been widely used as an integral component of combined surgery to treat developmental dysplasia of the hip in children. Autograft concern is further supported by authors who suggest the routine use of internal fixation. Problems such as graft extrusion, rotation and absorption, leading to loss of acetabular correction, were often noted in cases previously treated at our National Hospital for Pediatrics. This retrospective study reviewed the radiographic results of this treatment protocol in 106 hips developmental dislocated hips which met our inclusion criteria. The efficacy of this method to achieve and maintain a well covered and stable hip was the main objective of the study. Methods: This retrospective study reviewed the radiographs of 106 hips presenting with developmental dislocation which were treated by modified Salter’s innomiate osteotomy and using a fibular allograft as the interposition material. Dislocations of the hip were graded using the T?nnis system. Measurement of the acetabular index (AI) was the main variable. The minimum follow up period was 2 years. Possible complications such as loss of acetabular correction, hip redislocation, graft extrusion or resorption, the need for osteotomy internal fixation, delayed or non union, infection or avascular necrosis (AVN) were documented in this series. Results: Between January 2004 and December 2008, 106 surgeries were performed in 95 patients. Sixty-three (86.3%) of the patients were girls and ten (13.7%) were boys, thirteen patients (13.7%) were between twelve and eighteen months old at the time of the operation, the remaining eighty-two (86.3%) patients being between eighteen and thirty-six months old, with the mean age of 22.6

Wen-Shai Hung
Theoretical Economics Letters (TEL) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/tel.2013.35A3002

This paper investigates the factors influencing changes in marriage following retirement in Taiwan. The data used are from the Survey of Health and Living Status of the Middle Aged Elderly in Taiwan. The Weibull models are used to estimate the hazard rates of divorce or separation after retirement. The factors of unobserved heterogeneity are also examined for the influences of divorce or separation after retirement. The main empirical results find that Mainlanders, Aboriginals, people with better educational attainments, people with poor health or poor relationship with family have higher hazard rates of divorce or separation than others. In contrast, people with more children and persons with higher income have lower hazard rates of divorce or separation than others. After considering unobserved heterogeneity, most estimated coefficients on the marriage hazard regressors are larger in magnitude than the corresponding coefficients in the reference model.
