Shan Deng, Bing Hu, Hong-Mei An
Journal of Cancer Therapy (JCT) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/jct.2012.326114
Abstract: Colorectal cancer remains the third most common malignancy worldwide. According to the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), colorectal cancer is related to spleen-deficiency, damp-heat, and toxicity accumulation. Traditional Chinese medicine has been confirmed to effectively reduce toxic side effects and enhance curative effects of chemotherapy, palliate clinical syndrome, prevent recurrence and metastasis, improve quality of life and immune function, and prolong survival time in colorectal cancer. However, TCM theoretical and syndrome differentiation study has lagged far behind due to progression of therapy model in colorectal cancer. As a type of drug treatment, there are some common biological basis between chemotherapy, targeted therapy and anti-cancer herb therapy in colorectal cancer, such as apoptosis, cell senescence and autophagy. There are growing needs to explore the effect mechanism and compatibility of anti-cancer herbs, to further enhance the efficacy of TCM treatment in colorectal cancer.

Open Journal of Yangtze Oil and Gas (OJOGas) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/ojogas.2018.32007
Abstract: Stratiform, irregularly stratiform and columnar stromatolites are found in the third section of Qingjiamiao Group, while columnar and hemispherical stromatolites are found in Sanyoudong Group in Cambrian strata in Songzi Liujiachang area. 1) From the stratiform and columnar stromatolites to hemispherical stromatolites, the internal plaster content is decreasing. And from obvious layer characteristics to intermittent layer characteristics, they reflect that the hydrodynamic conditions are strengthening gradually. 2) From the perspective of sedimentary petrology and the classification of stromatolites, it is concluded that the combinations of stromatolites in different sedimentary environments are different and the main sedimentary facies of different types are different: a) Stratiform (including irregularly statiform) and columnar stromatolites are mainly distributed in the upper tidal zone; columnar and hemispherical stromatolites mainly distribute in the intertidal zone. b) The stratiform stromatolites are mainly found in the upper tidal zone with weak hydrodynamic conditions, while the columnar and hemispherical stromatolites are mainly found in powerful hydrodynamic conditions of the lower intertidal zone. 3) A mass extinction of part of the metazoan is the main reason for the growth of stromatolites in Cambrian strata in Songzi.
The contrast between defect solitons in parityben time symmetric superlattice and simple-lattice complex potentials

Hu Su-Mei,Hu Wei,

中国物理 B , 2012,
Abstract: The existence and stability of defect superlattice solitons in parity-time (PT) symmetric superlattice and simple-lattice complex potentials are reported. Compared with defect simple-lattice solitons in similar potentials, the defect soliton in superlattice has a wider stable range than that in simple-lattice. The solitons' power increases with increasing propagation constant. For the positive defect, the solitons are stable in the whole region where solitons exist in the semi-infinite gap. For the zero defect, the solitons are unstable at the edge of the band. For the negative defect, the solitons propagate with the shape of Y at low propagation constant and propagate stably at the large one.

Open Journal of Nursing (OJN) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ojn.2012.22016
Abstract: The purpose of this exploratory study was to determine health information technology functionalities in inpatient care units that were associated with reduced fall risk among adult patients aged 65 years or older in acute care hospitals in the United States. This study compared the differences in the hospital-acquired injurious fall rates for hospitals in California, Florida, and New York with and without fully implemented IT functionalities in their general medical and surgical inpatient units. It used publicly available 2007 datasets, the hospital was the unit of analysis, and teaching and non-teaching hospitals were analyzed separately. Hospital-acquired injurious falls were identified based on fall-related primary and secondary diagnoses and were flagged by the hospitals as not “present on admission” in the 2007 California, Florida, and New York State Inpatient Database data. The 4 health IT functionalities in general medical and surgical inpatient units were 1) electronic clinical documentation, 2) results viewing, 3) computerized provider order entry, and 4) decision support. The research question was What are the effective health IT functionalities in the general medical and surgical units for reducing fall risk among adult patients aged 65 years or older at their hospitals? Independent t tests were used. The results showed that no significant difference was found in the hospital-acquired injurious fall rates between hospitals with and without each of the 4 functionalities and between the teaching hospitals with and without each of the 4 functionalities. Significant differences were found in the injurious fall rates between non-teaching hospitals with and without electronic clinical documentation and result viewing. Future research may focus on assessing the clinicians’ use of the IT functionalities of electronic clinical documentation and results viewing, as well as the effect of the clinicians’ use patterns on patient outcomes.

Neuroscience & Medicine (NM) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/nm.2012.34042

The pathogenesis of Hashimoto’s encephalopathy has not been clearly elucidated and involvement of autoimmune damage has been proposed. We report a 23-year-old man who was emergently hospitalized for paroxysmal syncope and involuntary tremor with normal physical examination except for low heart rate. The patient was characterized by neurological symptoms, mild hypothyroidism, enlarged pituitary gland and extremely elevated thyrotropin, which all were reversed with levothyroxine alone. The case indicated that the pituitary-thyroid dysfunction may play a role in the pathogenesis of Hashimoto’s encephalopathy, hence, evaluation of pituitary gland should be recommended in diagnosis and treatment of Hashimoto’s encephalopathy.

Journal of Biomedicine and Biotechnology , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/419402
Abstract: Membrane distillation is a thermally driven membrane process for seawater desalination and purification at moderate temperatures and pressures. A hydrophobic micro-porous membrane is used in this process, which separates hot and cold water, allowing water vapor to pass through; while restricting the movement of liquid water, due to its hydrophobic nature. This paper provides an experimental investigation of heat and mass transfer in tubular membrane module for water desalination. Different operating parameters have been examined to determine the mass transport mechanism of water vapor. Based on the experimental results, the effects of operating parameters on permeate flux and the heat transfer analysis have been presented and discussed in details.
