Results of preliminary application are simply introduced in the basic instrumental analysis for atomic absorption spectrophotometry, ion-selective electrodes, coulometry and polarographic analysis and are contrasted to results of normal measurements.

Measuring Light and Geometry Data of Roadway Environments with a Camera  [PDF]

Evaluation of the conspicuity of roadway environments for their environmental impact on driving performance is vital for roadway safety. Existing meters and tools for roadway measurements cannot record light and geometry data simultaneously in a high resolution. This study introduced a new method that adopted recently developed high dynamic range (HDR) photogrammetry to measure the luminance and XYZ coordinates of millions of points across a road scene with the same device—a camera, and a MatLab code for data treatment and visualization. To validate this method, the roadway environments of a straight and flat section of Jayhawk Boulevard (482.8 m long) at Lawrence, KS and a roundabout (15.3 m in diameter) at its end were measured under clear and cloudy sky in the daytime and at nighttime with dry and wet pavements. Eight HDR images of the roadway environments under different viewing conditions were generated using the HDR photogrammetric techniques and calibrated. From each HDR image, synchronous light and geometry data were extracted in Radiance and further analyzed to identify potential roadway environmental hazards using the MatLab code (http://people.ku.edu/~h717c996/research.html). The HDR photogrammetric measurement with current equipment had a margin of errors for geometry measurement that varied with the measuring distance, averagely 23.1% - 27.5% for the Jayhawk Boulevard and 9.3% - 16.2% for the roundabout. Despite the social and economic challenges, Bangladesh has shown significant improvement in the basic condition of people’s lives in the past twenty years. The dramatic change lies in the success of many innovations happened in different sectors of the Bangladesh society. In the healthcare sector, projects such as the community health service program greatly improved the health of rural people, especially the maternal and children, in creative ways. These social innovation projects, usually initiated and implemented by non-government organizations throughout the history, have become an inherent part of rural life and played a big role in the economic empowerment of Bangladesh. By examining the environment and process of these social innovations, we draw a valuable lesson to shed lights on how social innovations can be best cultivated to improve the welfare of the affected population.

Can physical activity reduce excessive gestational weight gain? Findings from a Chinese urban pregnant women cohort study

Abstract: To investigate the association between physical activity during pregnancy and GWG of Chinese urban pregnant women.A pregnant women cohort was established between 2005 and 2007 in Changzhou, China. Physical activity levels of pregnant women were assessed using pedometer in the 2nd and 3rd trimester, respectively. According to step counts, pregnant women were categorized into 4 different physical activity groups: Sedentary, Low Active, Somewhat Active and Active. The pregnant women were followed for eligibility and data collection from the 2nd trimester to delivery. Multiple linear regression and multiple binary logistic model were applied to determine the association between physical activity and GWG.Physical activity levels and GWG of 862 pregnant women were assessed, among them 473 (54.9%) experienced excessive GWG. The adjusted odds ratio (OR) was 0.59 (95%CI: 0.36 ~ 0.95) for excessive GWG in the Active group during the 2nd trimester and 0.66 (95%CI: 0.43 ~ 1.00) in the Somewhat Active group during the 3rd trimester, compared with the Sedentary group respectively. In the last two trimesters, the Active group had 1.45 kg less GWG, than the Sedentary group. The ORs of excessive GWG decreased with the increased level of physical activity (P < 0.05).This study suggests that pregnant women being physically active have less weight gain during pregnancy.Excessive gestational weight gain (GWG) is a public health concern in both developed and developing countries. Abstract: Linear Algebra is one of the most important mathematical courses for undergraduate students. An overemphasization on memorization of definitions and equations on text books always weakens students' ability of innovation. To address this problem, in this paper we propose some approaches for teaching linear algebra. Our approaches include the following three aspects: combining the lectures with practical problems; depicting one concept or showing problem solving illustrations from different viewpoints; providing practices for students to find solutions by using scientific computation software. We believe that these methods could stimulate students' interest in learning, and encourage them to think divergently, which therefore can promote their ability for innovation.
A Survey of Graduates’ Employment and New Venture Creation in China in 2008

Abstract: “Graduates employment” is always the focus of society in China. At present, the hardness of graduates employment is an important issue for the development of China’s higher education, which has already aroused more attentions from the Communist Party of China and the government. Graduates’ views on career- choosing, family backgrounds, specialties, curriculum, recognitions to new venture creation, and many other factors impact their employment and new venture creation. Therefore, in order to solve the graduates employment issue, colleges and universities should build up innovative education ideas, offer courses of employment, especially courses of career planning and new venture creation, help college students form complete employment and new venture creation knowledge structures, expand their thoughts on employment, cultivate their consciousness of independent new venture creation and self-care ability, contributing to the social harmony and development.
A Study on the Application of STP Marketing Strategy in the MBA Education Program of Universities in China

Abstract: The MBA education has begun in America and now it has become mature after nearly one hundred years’ development. Although China’s MBA merely has a history of 17 years, it has already gained great achievements. In 1991, 9 universities in China had MBA program and 86 students enrolled in. In 2007, the two numbers were 127 and 59,776 respectively. The law of things’ development is to progress in a wave style and to rise in a spiral way. China’s MBA education is not an exception. In 2002, the enrolling number was 67,506, being the highest ever. In 2003 and 2004, the number decreased heavily, respectively reducing 16 percent and 13 percent. From 2005 to 2007, the number increased with a rate of 9 percent, 3 percent, and 6 percent respectively. The development of MBA in China’s universities has experienced a process of taking reference, exploring, developing, and regulating. In the aspects of teaching materials and methods, it chiefly takes references from experiences of universities in developed countries, such as America. In the aspects of enrollment and popularization, it makes a series of effective explorations based on China’s practical situation and others’ experiences. The application of STP marketing strategy exerts an extremely important driving effect on the development of China’s MBA program.
On the Information of the Second Moments Between Random Variables Using Mutually Unbiased Bases

Abstract: The notation of mutually unbiased bases(MUB) was first introduced by Ivanovic to reconstruct density matrixes\cite{Ivanovic}. The subject about how to use MUB to analyze, process, and utilize the information of the second moments between random variables is studied in this paper. In the first part, the mathematical foundation will be built. It will be shown that the spectra of MUB have complete information for the correlation matrixes of finite discrete signals, and the nice properties of them. Roughly speaking, it will be shown that each spectrum from MUB plays an equal role for finite discrete signals, and the effect between any two spectra can be treated as a global constant shift. These properties will be used to find some important and natural characterizations of random vectors and random discrete operators/filters. For a technical reason, it will be shown that any MUB spectra can be found as fast as Fourier spectrum when the length of the signal is a prime number. In the second part, some applications will be presented. First of all, a protocol about how to increase the number of users in a basic digital communication model will be studied, which has bring some deep insights about how to encode the information into the second moments between random variables. Secondly, the application of signal analysis will be studied. It is suggested that complete "MUB" spectra analysis works well in any case, and people can just choose the spectra they are interested in to do analysis. For instance, single Fourier spectra analysis can be also applied in nonstationary case. Finally, the application of MUB in dimensionality reduction will be considered, when the prior knowledge of the data isn't reliable.
