Abstract:

This paper analyses reliability data of HVDC systems of Southern China Power Grid. The weak links of HVDC systems’ operational reliability are DC control and protection, valve hall and valve cooling system and transmission lines. Some improvement measures and HVDC system reliability technology are proposed in this paper.

Abstract: The Jialing River Basin sericultural area is an ancient mulberry growing and silkworm rearing area in China. In the period of Tang Dynasty and Song Dynasty, a lot of famous silk products were produced in this sericultural area. Until now, cocoon and silk are still the major source of revenue for local people, with sericulturists being the major group of people who grow mulberry and rear silkworms. This paper has adopted the method of field research and questionnaire survey to investigate the modern sericulturists in terms of ages, education level, acquisition of silkworm rearing skills, and the support of national policies etc., aiming to explore the reason why sericulture, as part of Chinese culture, can continue.
Spatial weak-light solitons in an electro-magnetically induced nonlinear waveguide

Abstract: We show that a weak probe light beam can form spatial solitons in an electro-magnetically induced transparency (EIT) medium composed of four-level atoms and a coupling light field. We find that the coupling light beam can induce a highly controllable nonlinear waveguide and exert very strong effects on the dynamical behavior of the solitons. Hence, in the EIT medium, it is not only possible to produce spatial solitons at very low light intensities but also simultaneously control these solitons by using the coupling-light-induced nonlinear waveguide.

Abstract: Degraded text recognition is a difficult task. Given a noisy text image, a word recognizer can be applied to generate several candidates for each word image. High-level knowledge sources can then be used to select a decision from the candidate set for each word image. In this paper, we propose that visual inter-word constraints can be used to facilitate candidate selection. Visual inter-word constraints provide a way to link word images inside the text page, and to interpret them systematically.

Abstract:
In the past years, bistatic Radar Cross Section (RCS) characteristic has been caught increasing attention. The paper presents a bistatic RCS measurement system of full-size goals, which uses photoelectric conversion technology to solve the problem that excessive electrical signal attenuation exits because of the large distance between sending and receiving antenna. The paper analyzes the basic principle of photoelectric conversion and RCS measurement system, applies photoelectric conversion technology to RCS measurement system, and tests whether RCS measurement system works well while using photoelectric conversion technology. The test results show that the system can efficiently obtain the bistatic RCS characteristic of full-size targets.
A Clustering Algorithm for Key Frame Extraction Based on Density Peak  [PDF]

Abstract:
Aiming at the problem of video key frame extraction, a density peak clustering algorithm is proposed, which uses the HSV histogram to transform high-dimensional abstract video image data into quantifiable low-dimensional data, and reduces the computational complexity while capturing image features. On this basis, the density peak clustering algorithm is used to cluster these low-dimensional data and find the cluster centers. Combining the clustering results, the final key frames are obtained. A large number of key frame extraction experiments for different types of videos show that the algorithm can extract different number of key frames by combining video content, overcome the shortcoming of traditional key frame extraction algorithm which can only extract a fixed number of key frames, and the extracted key frames can represent the main content of video accurately.
Stem cells and neurodegenerative diseases

Abstract: Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by the neurodegenerative changes or apoptosis of neurons involved in networks, which are important to specific physiological functions. With the development of old-aging society, the incidence of neurodegenerative diseases is on the increase. However, it is difficult to diagnose for most of neurodegenerative diseases. At present, there are too few effective therapies. Advances in stem cell biology have raised the hope and possibility for the therapy of neurodegenerative diseases. Recently, stem cells have been widely attempted to treat neurodegenerative diseases of animal model. Here we review the progress and prospects of various stem cells, including embryonic stem cells, mesenchymal stem cell and neural stem cells and so on, for the treatments of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Huntington’ disease and Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/Lou Gehrig’s disease.
A Writer of Double Identities: A Study on Miguel Street from the Perspective of Orientalism

Abstract: Based on Said’s orientalism theory, the paper provides an analysis of Miguel Street, the early work written by the famous British immigrant writer, annalistic writer, V.S. Naipaul, who was the Nobel Laureate in 2001. Naipaul is a writer of double identities, i.e. the first world scholar with the third world origin. When he “gazes” at orient from the stand of oriental scholars, he has “been gazed” by occidental colonists. The realistic depiction of the foolish, narrow-minded, slothfully corrupted, culturally rootless mass on Miguel Street represents the oriental images defined by western literati. However, the application of black humor technique in the work is the colonial writer’s way of self-ridicule on his own state of be politically, economically and culturally oppressed and controlled by the west. Discriminative Motif Discovery via Simulated Evolution and Random Under-Sampling

Abstract: Conserved motifs in biological sequences are closely related to their structure and functions. Recently, discriminative motif discovery methods have attracted more and more attention. However, little attention has been devoted to the data imbalance problem, which is one of the main reasons affecting the performance of the discriminative models. In this article, a simulated evolution method is applied to solve the multi-class imbalance problem at the stage of data preprocessing, and at the stage of Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) training, a random under-sampling method is introduced for the imbalance between the positive and negative datasets. It is shown that, in the task of discovering targeting motifs of nine subcellular compartments, the motifs found by our method are more conserved than the methods without considering data imbalance problem and recover the most known targeting motifs from Minimotif Miner and InterPro. Meanwhile, we use the found motifs to predict protein subcellular localization and achieve higher prediction precision and recall for the minority classes.
Competition between phase coherence and correlation in a mixture of Bose-Einstein condensates

Abstract: Two-species hard-core bosons trapped in a three-dimensional isotropic harmonic potential are studied with the path-integral quantum Monte Carlo simulation. The double condensates show two distinct structures depending on how the external potentials are set. Contrary to the mean-field results, we find that the heavier particles form an outer shell under an identical external potential whereas the lighter particles form an outer shell under the equal energy spacing condition. Phase separations in both the spatial and energy spaces are observed. We provide physical interpretations of these phase separations and suggest future experiment to confirm these findings.
