Abstract: The present paper deals with the genus Paeania in Xinjiang, whose taxonomy has been confused. Based on the field observation, population sampling and the examination of herbarium specimens, a taxonomical revision is made in this paper. Two species are recognized , i. e. Paeania. anamala L. and P. sinjiangensis K. Y. Pan. P. altaica K. M. Dai et T. H. Ying is reduced to P. sinjiangensis and P. hybrida (= P. anamala var. intermedia) is reduced to P. anamala. The diagnostic characters of the two species are described and illustrated, and a map of their distribution in Xinjiang is presented. A key to these two species is provided here. 1. Abstract: 自我们近年发表一系列牡丹组分类文章以来, 国内外基本上赞同我们8个种的分类系统,但对一些问题仍有不同见解.本文进一步申述牡丹Paeonia suffruticosa Andrews 是一个独立的种而不是人工杂种, 以及银屏牡丹P. suffruticosa ssp. yinpingmudan是牡丹P. suffruticosa的野生类型而不是逸生的P. ostii的理由.上述论点也得到了分子树的支持.P. jishanensis T. Hong & W. Z. Zhao是一个合法名称, 而P. spontanea (Rehder) T. Hong & W. Z. Zhao则确实是一个多余名.太白山紫斑牡丹的学名应是P. rockii ssp. atava (Brühl) D. Y. Hong & K. Y. Pan, 因此P. moutan Sims ssp. atava Brühl不应是可疑的分类群.本文还对Halda的6个组合和两个杂交种名作了处理.结果, 本文包括了5个新异名和一个新组合.

Abstract: 光学显微镜和扫描电镜观察表明,金钱豹属(广义)花粉明显分为两个类型:Campanumoea inflata和C.javanica subsp.laponica的花粉5~8沟,外壁具相对密的短刺,刺高不过1μm,而C.lancifolia,C.celebica和C.parviflora的花粉3孔沟,外壁刺稀疏,高于2μm。种子表面纹饰也同样可分为 两类,前两个种一类,其种子表面网状,网眼规则而多角形,直径大于网脊宽度,网脊上的次级纹饰为念 珠状,而后三种为一类,其种子表面网眼不规则,直径与网脊宽度近相等,网脊上的次级纹饰绳索状。可 见花粉特征与种皮性状是高度相关的。后三个种所属的分类群就是被归并了的属Cyclocodon Griffith。 综合花粉、种皮及外部形态,这个属应予恢复。其近缘属应是Platycodon,而不是Campanumoea。

Abstract: Cladistic analysis of the morphological relationship of 40 populations of Paeonia sect. Moutan DC. (including all wild species) was carried out with an attempt to have a better understanding of the phylogeny of tree peonies. Twenty-five morphological characters were selected and used in unweighted pair-group method using arithmetic averages (UPGMA), the neighbor-joining (NJ) and the maximum parsimony (MP) tree construction executed with PAUP * program. The topologies of the trees obtained were largely in congruence and topological differences occurred only between MP tree and the other two in a clade comprising five species, P. suffruticosa, P. jishanensis, P. qiui, P. rockii and P. ostii, which were considered as closely related species based on both morphological and cytological characters. In both NJ and UPGMA trees, all the populations of each species formed a monophyletic clade, and the clades of P. ludlowii, P. qiui and P. decomposita had strong bootstrap supports (>90%), the clades of P. rockii , P. delavayi had moderate bootstrap supports (>70%), and the clades of P. suffruticosa , P. ostii and P. jishanensis had weak bootstrap supports (51%-70%). In MP tree, however, the corresponding bootstrap values of all the clades mentioned above were generally smaller than those in NJ and UPGMA trees and the populations of P. delavayi , P. ostii and P. suffruticosa failed to form monophyletic clades. Based on the above results, interspecific relationships of wild tree peonies were discussed and a phylogeny of sect. Moutan was reconstructed for the first time.

Abstract: Paeonia suffruticosa Andrews subsp. spontanea (Rehder) S. G. Haw et L. A. Lauener ( =P. spontanea = P. jishanensis) has been considered as the wild form of widely cultivated P. suffruticosa. However, the subspecies differs from the cultivated one in shape, division and indumentum of leaves and reproductive biology. As a result of extensive field work, a form with two individuals in Yinping Shan, Caohu, Anhui, and Songxian, Henan, are found to be extremely similar to P. suffruticosa, but apparently different from P. jishanensis. The form is considered to be the wild one of P. suffruticosa and described as new: P. suffruticosa subsp, yinpingmudan Hong, K. Y. Pan et Z. W. Xie.

Abstract: A portion (the big intron between exon 5 and 6, ca. 2 kb) of glycerol_3_phosphate acyltransferase (GPAT) gene of 15 wild tree peony accessions collected from 15 populations, which represent all the eight wild species in sect. Moutan, was analyzed using PCR_RFLP technique, and this portion of nine accessions, which represent also all the eight wild species, was sequenced for a better understanding of the interspecific relationships in this section. A reduced_median (RM) network of sect. Moutan was constructed with Network 3.0 computer program using the PCR_RFLP data obtained from the digestion experiments of 12 selected restriction enzymes. Both maximum parsimony (MP) and neighbor_joining (NJ) trees of sect. Moutan were constructed with PAUP*4.0 program using the sequences newly obtained in this study and from GenBank. As a result, a well resolved and highly supported gene tree of sect. Moutan (by bootstrap values) was obtained. The tree is basically in accordance with that constructed from morphological data. The phylogenetic relationships among species in sect. Moutan are discussed in detail.
