Distinguishing Stationary/Nonstationary Scaling Processes Using Wavelet Tsallis -Entropies
Julio Ramirez Pacheco,Deni Torres Román,Homero Toral Cruz
Mathematical Problems in Engineering , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/867042
Abstract: Classification of processes as stationary or nonstationary has been recognized as an important and unresolved problem in the analysis of scaling signals. Stationarity or nonstationarity determines not only the form of autocorrelations and moments but also the selection of estimators. In this paper, a methodology for classifying scaling processes as stationary or nonstationary is proposed. The method is based on wavelet Tsallis -entropies and particularly on the behaviour of these entropies for scaling signals. It is demonstrated that the observed wavelet Tsallis -entropies of 1/ signals can be modeled by sum-cosh apodizing functions which allocates constant entropies to a set of scaling signals and varying entropies to the rest and that this allocation is controlled by . The proposed methodology, therefore, differentiates stationary signals from non-stationary ones based on the observed wavelet Tsallis entropies for 1/ signals. Experimental studies using synthesized signals confirm that the proposed method not only achieves satisfactorily classifications but also outperforms current methods proposed in the literature.

On the nonextensivity of the long range X-Y model

Physics , 2003, DOI: 10.1023/B:JOSS.0000013963.16180.a3
Abstract: It will be given analytical and numerical evidence supporting that the X-Y model yields an extensive, i.e. proportional to the number of degrees of freedom N, internal energy U for any value of the interaction range.
Ensemble equivalence for non-Bolztmannian distributions

Physics , 2004,
Abstract: We discuss the possibility of using generalized canonical distributions, i.e. using other factors than $\exp(-\beta E)$, in order to compute the equilibrium properties of physical systems. It will be show that some other choices can, in certain cases, lead to a simpler calculation of those properties. The corresponding equivalence between the canonical and the generalized canonical distributions is derived using well-known principles of Statistical Mechanics and we exemplify the method by deriving in a simple way the equilibrium properties of the long--range Ising model.
Capital Redistribution Brings Wealth by Parrondo's Paradox
Raul Toral
Physics , 2002,
Abstract: We present new versions of the Parrondo's paradox by which a losing game can be turned into winning by including a mechanism that allows redistribution of the capital amongst an ensemble of players. This shows that, for this particular class of games, redistribution of the capital is beneficial for everybody. The same conclusion arises when the redistribution goes from the richer players to the poorer.
Mechanical Design of Superconducting Accelerator Magnets
Fernando Toral
Physics , 2015, DOI: 10.5170/CERN-2014-005.293
Abstract: This paper is about the mechanical design of superconducting accelerator magnets. First, we give a brief review of the basic concepts and terms. In the following sections, we describe the particularities of the mechanical design of different types of superconducting accelerator magnets: solenoids, cos-theta, superferric, and toroids. Special attention is given to the pre-stress principle, which aims to avoid the appearance of tensile stresses in the superconducting coils. A case study on a compact superconducting cyclotron summarizes the main steps and the guidelines that should be followed for a proper mechanical design. Finally, we present some remarks on the measurement techniques.
