Authentic Oral Interaction in the EFL Class: What It Means, What It Does not
Herazo Rivera,José David;
Profile Issues in Teachers` Professional Development , 2010,
Abstract: the communicative approach in efl education has generated a concern for the development of communication in the foreign language classroom within which the promotion of oral interaction is usually paramount. however, what constitutes authentic oral interaction is sometimes not clearly understood and some of the activities that take place in the classroom seem unlikely to generate meaningful opportunities for the development of oral interaction. to address this gap, this paper characterizes four samples of oral communication exchanges that occur in colombian efl secondary school classrooms in monteria and discusses their effectiveness for developing meaningful oral production in both student-student and teacher-student interaction. the paper has two main sections: the first is devoted to the analysis of student-student interaction, and the second to discussing teacherstudent exchanges.

Learning through Communication in the EFL Class: Going beyond the PPP Approach

Abstract: today, it seems clear that the goal of english as a foreign language (efl) teaching and learning in colombia is to foster communicative ability. however, the role communication is usually given in classrooms, that of displaying previously taught language items, poses limitations on the value it might have for developing efl proficiency. in this paper, we disagree with the assumption that communication can only take place when learners have learned and defend the position that it might happen when learners are learning. our position is supported with grounded theoretical reflection as well as with data coming from the efl class of a group of sixth graders during an ongoing action research project on the use of task-based learning (tbl) to develop citizenship and efl proficiency.

Abstract: The Programa Nacional de Bilingüismo (PNB) seeks to promote English proficiency in Colombian society in order to position Colombia within world communication processes, a global economy, and an increasingly multicultural world. Using documentary and statistical data within a case study approach, we characterize the PNB as a case of acquisition planning and argue that some of the social conditions that bolster bilingualism are not sufficiently developed in the Colombian context. Specifically, we maintain that the number of jobs requiring bilingual workers in Colombia's labor market and the patterns of international mobility of Colombians provide little opportunity and incentive for developing bilingualism to the extent envisioned by the PNB.

Abstract: thin-layer yam (varieties 9811-089 and 9811-091) drying was evaluated in a laboratory-type dish dryer at 45°c, 55°c and 70°c and 1 m/s average air speed in the universidad de cordoba?s applied engineering laboratory. the samples were 3.19 cm long, 0.5 cm thick, in 0.5x3x5 cm slices. the effects of temperature, variety and geometry on drying-time were evaluated using a completely random factorial adjustment design: temperature ( 45°c, 55°c and 70°c), geometry (slices and fillets) and variety (9811-089 and 9811-091). three repetitions were made per treatment, producing a 28.15% reduction in drying time at 70°c. drying curves were constructed from the obtained results; it was observed that drying took place during the decreasing period, proving that diffusion was the mechanism involved in discorea rotundata drying for the studied varieties. drying curves were adjusted to page, diffusion, thompson, newton, modified page, henderson and pabis mathematical models. the logarithmic model (determined by determination coefficient (r 2)) estimated mean error (se) and relative mean deviation (%p), showing that the logarithmic model better described the drying process (r2 ≥ 99.17 and se ≤ 0.0299).

Abstract: this paper analyzes the main advances in health coverage and health services demand in colombia using the 1997 and 2003 living standards surveys. the study showed an increase in health coverage associated with expansion of the subsidized care system, although a large proportion of the population is still not entitled to health care. the type of entitlement also directly affects the demand for services. there was an increase in preventive medical consultations in 2003 and a decrease in the use medical care for acute illness, due mainly to lack of money. access to medicines increased from 1997 to 2003, as reflected by a decrease in out-of-pocket expenditure on medicines.

Revista Facultad Nacional de Agronomía, Medellín , 2009,
Abstract: the ficus tree ficus benjamina has been introduced in colombia as an ornamental in urban settings. in the last years an increment on symptoms of thrips attack (rolled and necrotic leaves) have been more evident; however, little is known about the species of thrips causing such damage. this work is a preliminary survey in several cities of colombia. the species of thrips resgistered were: gynaikothrips garitacambroneroi retana, 2006 (phytophagous) and androthrips ramachandrai karny, 1896 (predator). also was found a predatory true bug montandoniola moraguesi (puton) associated with the galls produced by thrips. some sem photographs are present to show morphology details of two species of thrips associated with this tree.
