Abstract: The competitiveness of airlines is a subject of great complexity, many are the factors that define passenger choice of travel or decision of sending a cargo. Some of these factors are defined by airline managers and others are not controllable by airlines, they depend on external environment factors. This article seeks to contribute for the knowledge increase about the relation between passenger and cargo with airline revenue and profit, using Data Envelopment Analysis and statistics inference. So, it is about a multicriteria analysis of a sample of companies from several parts of the world. The results show the position of companies in relation to the efficiency frontier with respect to the use of its demands of passengers and cargo to produce revenue and the trend between operational margin and net profits of the sample. The analysis indicates that many companies must search for the improvement of its performance through the improvement of its portfolio of customers, searching a combination of passengers and cargo that produces better aggregate value. The indiscriminate search for customers will not lead to the waited results. Additionally, if it is observed that there is a reasonable relation between operational margin and net profits, this fortifies the necessity of the control of the costs to get results for the shareholders.

Journal of Transport Literature , 2011,
Abstract: The study examines financially 24 civil aviation companies, all of them are public companies with shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, of which three are European, 4 are located in Latin American countries, two Asian and other based in United States, with total annual revenues around 200 billion dollars. The analysis, covering five years of financial publications from airlines, approach capital structure variables such as operating cash flow, cash flow to shareholders, leverage and profitability ratios. We have observed that there were ten occurrences of unfunded liabilities in the annual publications analyzed. Two companies had just third parties capital since 2004 until 2006 and four airlines had no equity shareholder in the balance sheet. Among the evidences founded one stands in relation to operating margin, which suggests there aren’t economies of scale, with consequent reduction of costs and operating expenses, for companies that get more revenue, because it is precisely among those companies that found the highest incidence negative operating margins.

Cadernos EBAPE.BR , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1679-39512008000300006
Abstract: this article analyzes the impact of work initiatives promoted by two private enterprises in the re-socialization of prisoners from the social re-adaptation institute in vila velha - es - irs and the prison of medium security ii in viana - es - psme ii. the analysis is done from the stand point of inmates and companies' representatives in the prisons. the article also analyzes the managerial aspects related to the implementation and maintenance of these companies in the prisons. this is a qualitative case stud. data were collected in 2005 through two semi-structured interviews with the companies' representatives in the jail and ten inmates. competitiveness was the main reason for the companies' entry in the correctional system and for keeping the production in the prison instead of extending it to released convicts. from the inmates' perspective the job represents a way to escape from the prison atmosphere and inactivity as well as gaining work skills and financial support for their families. however, the conclusion made is that such a job has very little influence on the inmates' ability. nevertheless, the work experience has a positive impact on the day-to-day life of the inmate.

Abstract: Objective: The goal of this study was to determine the prevalence of C. trachomatis in women diagnosed with infertility attending the Outpatient Clinic of Infertility from Botucatu Medical School, UNESP, Brazil. Patients and Methods: This molecular study enrolled a total of 112 women. Among these patients, 62 presented primary infertility while 50 presented secondary infertility. The criteria for eligibility included women who were: reproductive-aged; no prior report of seroconversion for HIV; no antibiotic or vaginal cream used in the preceding 30 days; and abstinence from sexual intercourse for 72 hours before the visit. The women were submitted to a gynecological examination and cervical samples were collected with an endocervical cytobrush for molecular analysis of C. trachomatis. Results: The prevalence of chlamydial infection was 8% with similar prevalence between primary (8.1%) and secondary (8.0%) infertility. Conclusion: Considering the asymptomatic nature of chlamydial infection and its association with tubal factor infertility, there is a pressing need to incorporate the screening of C. trachomatis infection as part of the routine investigation for infertility. The early diagnostic by screening can minimize complications and reduce Public Health costs with Assisted Reproductive Technology.
Worms, slugs and humans: the medical and popular construction of an emerging infectious disease
Grisotti, Márcia;Avila-Pires, Fernando Dias de;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59702011000300016
Abstract: the identification of the worm angiostrongylus costaricensis parasitizing land snails and humans in southern brazil suggests under-diagnosis and under-notification of patients with abdominal angiostrongyliasis. this article analyzes how the concept of abdominal angiostrongyliasis was constructed in different ways in costa rica and brazil and how these changes affected the understanding of its clinical and epidemiological diagnosis. the research shows that abdominal angiostrongyliasis is, de facto, a sociocultural construct, although the parasites and vectors are real. the analisys also shows the importance of an interdisciplinary approach for understanding disease.
Manifesta??es clínicas de pacientes com diagnóstico de neurocisticercose por tomografia computadorizada
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X1999000400019
Abstract: a survey was conducted in the urban area of lages using patients who had been submitted to a computed tomography of the skull in the period of march-december, 1996, for different reasons. forty-two patients with a provisional diagnosis of neurocysticercosis, and 57 negatives were personally interviewed by one of the authors (pfuetzenreiter), using a semi-structured procedure. more individuals with a provisional diagnostic of neurocysticercosis reported clinical manifestations related to this infection than those found negative. this difference is more marked among women, except in relation to convulsions, more frequently reported by men (19.05%) than by women (7.14%). the greater percentage of inactive forms (83.33%) and a longer history of perceived symptoms among those positives suggest that the condition is not new.

Abstract: in 1955 a population explosion of the slug sarasinula linguaeformis (semper, 1885) damaged crop plantations in the municipalities of nova itaberaba and planalto alegre, western of santa catarina state, brazil. in this article we analyze the socioeconomic impacts caused by the emergence of this plague, which raised the suspicion, eventually confirmed, of the occurrence of human cases of abdominal angyostrongiliasis. the data were collected through the observation of a serological study during the period of august 2000 to august 2001 by a research team from the catholic university of rio grande do sul (pucrs) together with field technicians from the empresa de pesquisa agropecuária e extens?o rural de santa catarina s.a. (epagri-sc), and with the members of 50 local families. in order to analyze these impacts, we elaborated several analytical categories as economic losses; preventive measures, habit change and social prejudice, that emerged from the narratives of the residents interviewed. it became evident the need for sociological analyses of epidemiological problems, in addition to strictly medico-sanitary considerations.
