Abstract: The proposed incentive programs in biosecurity practices focus predominantly on epidemiological, biological and economic aspects with the socio-cultural and interpersonal relationships usually left in the background. The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of interpersonal relationships in the adherence to the use of personal protective equipment by nursing staff. This was a qualitative descriptive study conducted in 2008 in a teaching hospital in Goiania/GO, in which 15 employees of the nursing staff participated. Data were collected through focus groups and analyzed by the “Interpretation of Meanings” method, from which emerged the category “motivation of interpersonal relationships or non-adherence to the use of personal protective equipment’. The results also show that the interpersonal relationship influences security and personal protection issues at various levels in the workplace, both in organizational aspects and management such as in relationships with other professional catagories and other hospital sectors. The relationships in the workplace appeared to be determinate and often decisive for taking protection related decisions. It was concluded that adherence to the use of personal protective equipment is influenced by interpersonal relationships established by the professionals, because in them, values and beliefs are shared and can be decisive in personal choices.

Revista Latino-Americana de Enfermagem , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-11692011000200018
Abstract: a qualitative study conducted in a teaching hospital with 15 nursing professionals. attempted to analyze the reasons, attitudes and beliefs of nursing staff regarding adherence to personal protective equipment. data were collected through focus groups, analyzed by the method of interpretation of meanings, considering rosenstock’s model of health beliefs as a reference framework. data revealed two themes: occupational safety and interpersonal relationship. we identified several barriers that interfere in matters of safety and personal protective equipment, such as communication, work overload, physical structure, accessibility of protective equipment and organizational and management aspects. adherence to personal protective equipment is determined by the context experienced in the workplace, as well as by individual values and beliefs, but the decision to use the personal protective equipment is individual.

Abstract: Bacteria form biofilms as an adaptive mechanism in response to environmental changes. Streptococcus mutans is the biofilm-forming bacterium that is primarily associated with dental caries. The expression of important genes by bacteria in biofilms is different from that of planktonic cells. Lectins are proteins that bind specifically to carbohydrates and may have important biological activities on bacterial cells, acting as antibacterial and anti-biofilm agents. ConM (Canavalia maritima lectin) is a protein that is able to inhibit the planktonic growth and biofilm formation of S. mutans. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of ConM and concanavalin A (ConA) on the expression of genes related to virulence and biofilm formation in S. mutans. The results showed that ConM significantly reduced the expression of genes encoding enzymes related to adhesion, formation and regulation of biofilms. On the contrary, ConA did not alter the expression of the genes studied. Because the two lectins have a high degree of similarity, the differences in the actions of ConM and ConA may be explained by the small structural differences in the carbohydrate recognition domain of the lectins.

Cunha, Manuela Carneiro da;
Estudos Avan?ados , 1994, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-40141994000100016
Abstract: the indians future in brazil will depend on several strategic choices as much the brazilian state and international community as different races. it is a question of partnership. by historical reasons, which were recognized in brazil during the centuries, the native populations have a right to their territories. but these rights should not be thought as an impediment to the rest of the country. on the contrary, they are a preserving prerequisite of a richness even inestimable, but cruciate, the biodiversity and knowledges of traditional populations about natural kinds. according to everybody's interest what it should look for is to give conditions not to loose this richness. because of that, it is unreasonable want to open all amazonia areas to indiscriminate exploration. thus, it is necessary converge the indians rights with the brazilian society interests as a whole.
Popula??es tradicionais e a Conven??o da Diversidade Biológica
Cunha, Manuela Carneiro da;
Estudos Avan?ados , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-40141999000200008
Abstract: the convention for biological diversity (cdb) has acknowledged the importance of traditional knowledge and stewardship of genetic ressources. the trips agreement and the cbd are leading brazil and other countries to change their legislation on intellectual rights and on access to genetic ressources and associated knowledge. should one then extend the intellectual property system to cover local and indigenous knowledge? or should one rather maintain it in the public domain and assure that local people participate in the possible benefits of commercial products derived from it? and then, what is the nature of local knowledge?
Cunha, Manuela Carneiro da;
Mana , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-93131998000100001
Abstract: what is the shaman's labor in the amazon today? more generally, how should one account for the expansion of shamanism and its clientele in colonial situations since the sixteenth century? which shamanic power hierarchies and competences and which specific forms correspond to different political systems and to each kind of nexus between the local and the global? the shaman is, by his very trade, a translator. it is suggested here that translation should be understood in its strong, benjaminian sense, as a search for resonances and reverberations between different codes and systems, and as a totalization of partial perspectives.
