Journal of Cosmetics, Dermatological Sciences and Applications (JCDSA) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/jcdsa.2016.64019
Abstract: Background: Topical application of retinol connected with the improvement of various parameters of aging skin is often used in post- and menopausal women. Vitamin A - vitamin C complex treatments may influence skin surface lipids and boost the fibroblasts activity as well as increase their number, thus inducing the improvement of its elasticity. Objective: In the current paper, we demonstrate and evaluate the impact of retinol and vitamin C complex on the face and neck skin elasticity level in a group of women aged 50 - 69. Method: Reviscometer RVM 600 (Courage & Khazaka, Germany) was used to measure forehead, cheeks and neck skin elasticity in a group of 21 women. Each of the patients was subjected to four treatment sessions that included skin elasticity measurements before each of the three retinol peels at 3-week intervals and one 3-week after the completion of the therapy. Results: Significant increase in the cheeks and neck skin elasticity was observed in the study group. Conclusion: Treatments including retinol with vitamin C - vitamin A complex significantly influence the improvement of skin elasticity, thus reducing the signs of skin aging.

Abstract: Background: The uses of lactobionic acid, corundum microdermabrasion, and a combined technique, are treatments supporting therapies for acne vulgaris and seborrhoea. Objectives: The work was conducted to determine the effects of the peeling with lactobionic acid, corundum microdermabrasion, and a combined technique of both means on sebum secretion in acne vulgaris patients. Methods: The peeling with 50% lactobionic acid, the corundum microdermabrasion, and the combined technique were applied to 45 female patients divided into three groups of fifteen people each. Every one treatment was given five times in two week intervals. The measurements of sebum secretion were done within the T- and U-zones using Sebumeter SM15 (Courage & Khazaka, Germany). The last (sixth) measurement was performed two weeks after the last treatment. Results: Decrease in the level of sebum secretion was found during second or third measurement. Two weeks after the last treatment, the biggest decrease in the level of sebum secretion was observed in the patients treated with lactobionic acid, followed by those treated with the combined method. Conclusions: Treatments consisting of the peeling with lactobionic acid, corundum microdermabrasion, or the combined technique, brought significant decrease in the level of sebum secretion. The biggest decrease was observed in the patients treated with lactobionic acid, which being structurally similar to α-hydroxyacids exerts exfoliating properties. The combined method was also effective, because of increased skin penetration of the active ingredients, resulting from the abrasion of stratum corneum during the corundum microdermabrasion. The corundum microdermabrasion alone was the least effective approach.

Abstract: Acne vulgaris is a disease associated with follicular hyperkeratosis, proliferation of Propionibacterium acnes – anaerobic bacteria – and excessive sebum secretion. The rate of sebum secretion increases with age and becomes greatest at puberty. It is strictly connected with excessive production of adrenal cortex hormones – sex hormones, especially androgens with their receptors expressed in sebocytes. Moreover, the formation of acne is influenced by stress which increases adrenal androgen secretion, stimulates cytokines production and increases sebaceous gland activity. Acne may also be related to dairy products and high glycemic index foods which increase the level of insulin and insulin-like growth factors and thus enhance androgen synthesis. Skin lipids measuremets (sebumeter, sebutape, sebufix, bentonite method and others) in patients with acne vulgaris have allowed to show the differences in sebum secretion and have opened new ways of doing reasearch. The aim of the paper is to show present knowledge of the sebum secretion in patients with acne vulgaris and the possibilities of measuring it.

Polish Gastroenterology , 2010,
Abstract: Introduction: Clinical manifestation of atopic dermatitis (AD) is complex and usually involves at least two systems. In infants skin lesions are often accompanied by symptoms of the digestive tract. Aim of the study: Estimate the frequency of coexistence and kind of digestive tract symptoms in children with atopic dermatitis. Material and methods: The retrospective analysis comprised 2256 children aged from 0 to 6 months of life treated in the II Department of Pediatrics and Allergology of Polish Mother's Memorial Hospital Research Institute in the years 2003-2009. Among them, 471 children had various types of skin lesions. Among these children we separated patients with atopic dermatitis who have an allergy as the cause confirmed by a positive food challenge and the results of allergic and immunological studies. Results: Atopic dermatitis was diagnosed in 391 children, which accounted for 17.3% of all the hospitalized patients. In 140 of them, symptoms of the digestive tract were found, including intestinal colic in 49.3%, obstipation in 6.4%, regurgitation and vomiting in 33.6% and chronic diarrhea in 10.7% of the examined children. Conclusions: The conducted examinations showed frequent coexistence of atopic skin lesions and symptoms of the digestive tract (1/3 of the analyzed children). 71.6% children had disseminated skin lesions which indicates the tendency for more frequent dissemination of skin lesions in the smallest children. Improvement after dietary therapy confirmed the cause-effect relationship between food allergy and atopic dermatitis.

Abstract: Introduction:The purpose of the work is to estimate the frequency of occurrence of various infections in infants and small children, aged between 0 and 36 months with atopic dermatitis in the practice of a family doctor.Material/Methods:The study has been conducted on the basis of the retrospective analysis of medical documentation of disease among children born in 2005–2008 treated in Outpatient Clinic of the Polish Mother’s Memorial Hospital in Lodz. Results:Children suffering from atopic dermatitis are more prone to develop infectious diseases. Conclusions:Infectious diseases in children with atopic dermatitis are of more chronic nature and more often require antibiotic therapy. Such children often manifest chronic diarrhea and their stool contains Staphylococcus aureus. They are more often hospitalized because of difficulty in setting a diagnosis and applying treatment in outpatient clinics.

Abstract: Introduction:The pathogenesis of seborrheic dermatitis has not been fully elucidated. A number of anascogenic yeasts of Malassezia spp. appear to be involved in the intensity of the symptoms. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the levels of selected inflammatory cytokines, IL-2, IL-4, IFN-γ and TNF-α, in the serum after treatment with itraconazole.Material/Methods:Sixty-six subjects were enrolled in the study. The control group consisted of 30 participants (23 females and 7 males) without any clinical disorders, aged 24–65 (37.41±6.08 years). Thirty-six patients with seborrheic dermatitis (16 females and 20 males), aged 19–76 (38.61±13.77), constituted the study group. The measurement of IL-2, IL-4, IFN-γ and TNF-α levels was performed by ELISA using a Human High Sensitivity kit (Diaclone, France). Results:After six-week treatment with itraconazole administered daily at a dose of 200 mg using pulse therapy, there was remission of the disease or at least substantial clinical improvement in the patients with seborrheic dermatitis. The levels of IL-2 and IFN-γ cytokines in the study group were higher than in the control group. After the treatment the level of IFN-γ secretion in the male patients with seborrheic dermatitis significantly increased. The levels of the other studied cytokines did not significantly differ. Conclusions:The treatment with itraconazole had a beneficial effect on the clinical condition of the skin of the patients. IFN-γ is a cytokine whose secretion might affect the condition of the skin in seborrheic dermatitis.

Post?py Higieny i Medycyny Do?wiadczalnej , 2012,
Abstract: Introduction:The etiology of seborrheic dermatitis is not fully understood. It has been observed that a number of anascogenic yeasts of Malassezia spp. is related to the intensity of the symptoms. The aim of the study is to measure the concentration of selected inflammatory factors IL-2, IL-4, IFN-γ and TNF-α in the serum by an immunoenzymatic method, as well as to confirm the relationship between the studied factors and the clinical condition of the patients (sex, the intensity of skin lesions according to the Scaparro scale) and, finally, to compare the results with the control group.Material/Methods:The total number of subjects who participated in the study was 66. The control group (C) consisted of 30 volunteers (23 females and 7 males), with no clinical disorders, aged 24–65 (37.41±6.08 years). Thirty-six patients with seborrheic dermatitis (16 females and 20 males), aged 19–76 (38.61±13.77), made up the study group. The determination of IL-2, IL-4, IFN-γ and TNF-α was performed by ELISA using a Human High Sensitivity kit (Diaclone, France). Clinically, the intensity of the disease process was evaluated on the Scaparro et al. scale, as modified by Kaszuba. Results:We observed statistically significantly higher levels of IL-2 and IFN-γ in patients with seborrheic dermatitis compared to the control group. Conclusions:We conclude that seborrheic dermatitis is a dermatosis characterized by a cell type immune response with an important role of IFN-γ and IL-2.
