Abstract: objective: the goal of this study was to assess the acute effect of physical exercise on the cognitive function of depressed elderly patients in a dual-task experiment. introduction: physical exercise has a positive effect on the brain and may even act as a treatment for major depressive disorder. however, the effects of acute cardiovascular exercise on cognitive function during and after one session of aerobic training in elderly depressive patients are not known. methods: ten elderly subjects diagnosed with major depressive disorder performed neuropsychological tests during and after a moderate physical exercise session (65-75%hrmax). a digit span test (forward and backward) and a stroop color-word test were used to assess cognitive function. the elderly participants walked on an electric treadmill for 30 minutes and underwent the same cognitive testing before, during, immediately after, and 15 minutes after the exercise session. in the control session, the same cognitive testing was conducted, but without exercise training. results: the results of the digit span test did not change between the control and the exercise sessions. the results of the stroop color-word test improved after physical exercise, indicating a positive effect of exercise on cognition. conclusions: these data suggest that the cognitive functions of depressed elderly persons, especially attention and inhibitory control, are not impaired during and after an acute session of physical exercise. in contrast, the effect of dual-tasks showed beneficial results for these subjects, mainly after exercise. the dual-task may be a safe and useful tool for assessing cognitive function.

Abstract: the muscular localization of the hydatid cyst is uncommon (0.5 to 5.4%) and it is usually secondary to hepatic or pulmonary disease. a case of gluteus intramuscular hydatid cyst is reported, calling attention to this atypical localization of the disease, which should be taken into account in the practice of surgery. the absence of residual cysts in the most common sites confers a higher interest to the case reported in this work.
Estudos Sobre Leishmaniose: I. Primeiros Casos de Leishmaniose Espontanea Observados em Cobáios
Medina, Heitor;

Abstract: the author describes the first cases of spontaneous leishmaniasis in guinea-pigs, as verified for the first time, in curitiba, at the institute of biology and technological research. studying the inoculability of paracoccidioide brasiliensis in guinea-pigs, he found animals which presented tumoral lesions in the ears and peritesticular skin. the examination of these tumors, mixed with a small drop of giemsa's original solution, plus the exam of the rubbings of the same material, coloured by the may-grunwald giemsa after fixation by heidenhein's solution and the histological exams of the cuts in the tumoral lesions revealed the presence of elements which possessed the same morphology and aspect of the leishman-donovani corpuscles. in the meanwhile, a parasitosis by protozoarians of the leishmania variety might have been suspected, because large macrophagi could be seen in the histological cuts, all parazitized, identical with those which are found in other cutaneous leishmaniosis. the author then proceeds to the experimental study of the sickness, first by endeavouring to obtain material for the inoculation and cultures, by means of punctures in the tumors. part of the product of the punctures was sown in n. n. n. medium and part inoculated in other guinea-pigs. after the third day the cultures presented the flagellated forms of the parasite, free or grouped in rosettes in the culture liquid. all the guinea-pigs inoculated with part of the material obtained by puncturing and with the liquids of the cultures, reproduced the tumors found in the animals spontaneously infected. with a view to reproducing the same features of generalization which were observed in other experimental animals, with other strains of leishmania, new animals were inoculated after having been tarred and blocked in order to attempt the breaking down of possible natural resistences, which proved unnecessary, however, for the generalization went on of itself naturally and without artifice. inoculat

Inoculations were made by the subcutaneous, intraperitonial, intrasplenic, intramedular, intracerebral and endovenous channels and by instillation in the conjunctive, in those guinea-pigs which received subcutaneous inoculations, the incubation period varied between 11 and 15 days, this period being longer when the internal channels were used, when it was generally one or two months before the lesions appeared. When the lesions are on the skin or when the inoculation is done there, the first manifestations of lesions are characterized by a slight thickening of the subcutaneous tissue, which, little by
Pathogenesis of Trypanosoma evansi infection in dogs and horses: hematological and clinical aspects

Abstract: in the present work it was sougth to correlate the coloration of the fruit of ananas comosus variety perola with the pulp quality, aiming at the orientation of the fruit grower to the correct time of harvest. pineapple fruit was chosen in 5 stages of maturation recognized by its external characteristics, principally its color. the fruits of each stage of maturation were analysed, determining the. weight, the percentage of soluble solids, and relation of acid to soluble solids. at the same time a test was made classifying the fruits as acid, regular, good, excellent, and spoiled. a correlation was found between the external coloration of the fruit and the degree of maturation. concluding from this that the best time to harvest the variety perola is in the third stage in the regions closest to the market and in the second stage in the regions which are farther away. for the cannery industry the fruit should be harvest in the first stage.

Abstract: the present article aims to clarify some concepts about local development at a human scale, through a literature review. for that purpose it is divided into two parts: concepts about local development, and local development and its semantics. the first part deals with local development in areas such as etymologic, semantic, spatial, territorial, communitarian, place and landscape. the second part presents estimates and historical data, semantic variations, endogenous and exogenous factors and the meaning of sustainability. the study on human scale is incorporated to the subsequent parts.
Inseguran?a em meio urbano: o espa?o na media??o de oportunidades delituosas
Heitor,Teresa V.;
Psicologia , 2007,
Abstract: a range of urban problems is blamed for the decline of the quality of life in our cities and towns, which include the increase of insecurity in core urban settings. urban insecurity, being the fear of crime or the lack of civilities, has serious implications on the daily life routines and affects the use of public urban space. it is assumed that crime occurrence is related to the ease and opportunity to commit the action. opportunity occurs when the offender meets the victim in a vulnerable circumstance. in this process, urban space plays a fundamental role by emitting information about the circumstance. the lack of (active or passive) surveillance signals increases the opportunity. this paper intends to relate the spatial components to the informal control of urban space, i.e., ?natural surveillance? and to explore how to maximize its effects. the paper considers two parts: the first one deals with the natural surveillance rationale and how it is realized in space; the second one approaches the debate that followed the publication of the jacobs (1962) and newman (1972)?s pioneer work on natural surveillance. main principles and spatial strategies advocated by jacobs (1962), newman (1972), jefferey (1978) and hillier (1984) are discussed. it is concluded that natural surveillance is related to social and physical interaction provided by the urban environment, which in turn is established by means of active and/or passive mediators.
